  • Brent Mason is one of the titans of the Nashville studio scene who's impact on the "Nashville Sound" cannot be overstated. His versatile and ear-catching guitar work has helped define the works of some of the greatest Country Music Artists of all time, including, Alan Jackson, George Strait, Trisha Yearwood, Shania Twain, Brooks & Dunn, Randy Travis and Blake Shelton among many, others. In part 1 of our Truetone Lounge interview Mason tells of his early years in Ohio, his move to Nashville, and how Chet Atkins helped launch his career by having him guest on his Stay Tuned album in 1985. Brent also discusses the shift from pristine "direct" guitar tones in the 80's, to earthier "amp" tones in the early 90's. Watch for part 2, where we continue his story from the mid-1990's to today.

In all seriousness, Brent Mason played at a guitar camp I was attending in Nashville in 2004. I was about 5 feet from him. His brother comp'd for him during the session. It was one of the most mind blowing displays of guitar playing I have ever seen. I asked him to sign my Tele afterward. He said, "Are you sure man?" I said "Hell yes!" I've seen a lot of guitarists in my life. He's top five in history, in my worthless opinion.

Brent is such a monster on the guitar and he seems to be a genuinely nice human being as well.

I've been researching, watching and really listen ing to the masters of the guitar for a few years now and there's always one constant among the best....humility! From Danny Gatton to Freddie King to SRV to Roy Clarke and back around to Albert Collins and Lonnie Mack, they and 50 more are amazing talents..but such nice people.

I've never really liked new country and I've completely ignored it my entire life. I just started playing guitar for an established country band and have been listening to these unfamiliar songs for the first time while paying particular attention to the guitar. A LOT of the solos are done by Brent and he's a monster on guitar. Tack on the fact that he appears to be a really decent guy. I wish I'd have started listening to this stuff sooner.

This intervew has been incredibly well prepaired... great questions, good knowledge of Brent musical path... and a very tastefull way to touch gear relatd subjects without over shadow the human / musician part of the interview. I really appreciate your work! Keep on the great work! Looking forward to the next episode!

We have tried hard to make them fun interviews that tell the musician's story. It seems that most focus either on gear, or just the story. We strive to do both in a well-prepared way. Thank you for noticing our effort. Zac

Then I saw Brent onstage in Joe Satriani’s band I see why he’s in that band Joe needs another guitarist as good as he is paying those parts, I’m sure Brent is well compensated for his work with them, he’s very musical dude

Man I hope no one takes this wrong, because I'm a BM *FAAAAN* by all measurements, even wearing out his solo album "Hot Wired" and doing my best to learn some of the [less complicated, mind-blowing] parts. But every interview I've ever seen of him he seems to be very uncomfortable at a certain level. I can't help wondering of many artists this brilliant don't struggle in such instances. He's charming and entertaining, but I can't help thinking that deep down he would rather be ANYWHERE else just playing guitar.

    • @TruetoneFX
