In my time testing I have found that adding 10% silence at the end (multiplying the total sample length by 0.1) makes a more precise loop and is more in time. I can confirm that Sample 2 users still have to add the silence at the end to make the breaks loop properly. Hope this helps anyone else looking to do similar things with the Volca Sample.
I made some calculations and +10% is my result as well. Little explanation: Start point knob value for the last step should be 120 (not 119. and all the others should be increased by 1.). This means last step start point will be on 85% of the length of the sample. On original sample start point of the last step is on 93.75% of the lengh of the sample (15/16). We need to make 93.75% we have into 85% we need. 93.75% / 85% = 110%.
Much thanks. What a gem. This was my first experience chopping. Did I just unlock a superpower? I'm sure that anyone that hears me play from here on out would love to thank you as well. *LEVEL UP ACQUIRED*
NOTE: Volca 'Sample 2' owners MIGHT be able to skip the adding silence bit, the manual says the sample start range is 0-100% but I'm not sure this is correct and I don't own a Sample 2. Also, slight maths error in this video, table of values should be: 0,8,16,24 / 32,40,48,56 / 64,72,80,88 / 96,104,112,120. Thanks to Goat-X for pointing this out. Make sure you update your firmware too as some earlier versions can't use motion sequencing on the Sample Start knob, thanks to Kyle Garner for pointing that out.
The sample start knob on the Volca only goes up to 90% when we need to control the full range so the silent section effectively shifts the end of the sample to 90% of the way through.
This video helped me a bunch a couple years ago and completely transformed the way that I work w the vSample. And then Pajen firmware changed the game even more to expand general functionality even further. Only recently I discovered the fun of chopping up steps non-sequentially, that is, following this method but then setting parameters of random steps to different intervals of 8 (eg., step 1 is 0, step 2 is 88, step 3 is 88 again, step 4 is 24 etc.), so it can allow for programmable step jumps in a way. And motion record adjustments to other parameters on individual steps like speed/pitch works the same way, naturally. Not exactly as quick as finger drumming chopped pads on an MPC, but makes the vSample such an exceedingly unique instrument for the money. If you have several breaks/parts like this happening at once, you can let that sample knob fly between all of them as they’re playing live to dynamically switch parts up with the ‘step jumps’ and other tweaks already baked in for really wild results.
Thank you. Yes I found it a lot of fun to play live and it's still something I use. One day I must get round to trying the Pajen firmware. Loads of people have told me how good it is but I've not found the time to experiment just yet
@@ChrisLodyMusic When I first watched your video, I was amazed at the fact that it was now possible to see the Sample a viable tool for making drum and bass tunes with a handful of other synths samplers I have, with the volca mostly just handling the timestretched break parts. Now after mastering the workflow quirks and experimenting with Pajen (polyphony for playing chromatic notes via midi controller, automated part muting via bar filter, QoL improvements like Part Copy, etc.) I now see it as a really handy machine capable of composing whole finished breakcore tracks all in a single box with significant live performance potential. Thanks again for taking the time to make this tutorial! Would love to see any new ideas or inspirations you come up with for the vSample :)
When you showed me the tempo changes I was definitely excited to get home and do this. I love combining breaks I make from scratch on the sample with my electribe for some really fun IDM jams and this will Absolutely make it even more fun for me. love your videos thanks
This was a very helpful tutorial. It opened up a world of possibilities for me. I used these principles to achieve the same result in my Korg Drumlogue as well as in my Polyend Play. The Drumlogue is probably the easiest to achieve the same result. I simply divide 101 (0-100) starting points by 16 steps for about 6.5 units for each step. For the Polyend Play is a bit more complicated. You must divide the milliseconds by 16 or 32 or 64 steps... depending on how 'granular' you want to get!! And... try this trick with other loops... like synths or strings. It can get very interesting!! I have some videos where you can tell I've taken the principles here and expanded these ideas out for my own needs!! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this tutorial!!
@@Necrobot777 Thanks very much 😁 Yeah it's one of those tricks that you can use on lots of different gear. I've used it on the Liven Lofi-12 before they added a dedicated slice mode, also good for some DIY chopping and stretching
Brother!!!! You have NO idea how happy I am to find your channel. I love my Volca sample but its so frustrating that I've never been able to get Voysr to work for me (PC). I produce old skool house but have always wanted to import breakbeats so I can make hardcore and jungle. I'll be trying again today...
No problem 😄 Check the description though, I made a slight error in calculating the table of values. Odd that Vosyr isn’t working for you, had no problem with it. Though maybe try the latest Volca Sample update, got a feeling it makes it more sensitive to data at the input. Luckily there are some other bits of software to try if need be.
@@ChrisLodyMusic - Chris, you don't have a video on how to use Voysr (or even update the Volca sample, as you say?). I've managed to upload samples to audacity as instructed, but my Volca doesn't register with my audio out. Grrr!
I don’t at the moment but it could be something I could do as a tutorial if you’d like as the Volca manual in particular won’t help at all with this kind of thing and I had some odd results with it until recently, like having to turn on flight mode on Android even though my phone was completely offline 🤷♂️
@@ChrisLodyMusic Haha! Yeah, it's an odd little box. I'll have to figure out why it won't talk to my audio in. Anyway, I'm subscribing mate. Thanks to you I've learned how to upload and trim samples into Audacity today, which is a major step forward for me. I've bought the MC707 so will be uploading loops into this, which ought to be easier than the Volca. But I'd like to master the little bugger all the same! Cheers.
The first sampled break I ever learned how to rebreak. Except that was in a rex file for Reason 1, and that was Recycle. Great little tut on the Volca Sample. I have a small section of loops on mine, taken from my own work, as well as a section containing wav's packed with very short samples of all kinds. I like to essentially double (or more) the pitch/speed of any long samples, before uploading. I only wish Korg had given the Sample just a bit more sample memory.
Thanks for watching. Yeah I think it was an early version of Fruity Loops where I first learned how to do this. I have the same, a collection of short samples I put together to use with trackers mostly. I don’t mind the 4mb limit tbh, plenty for one project and makes you think creatively
For a single project, plenty of room, for sure. I use the Sample across multiple tracks, consecutively. Sometimes two tracks at once, as a segue. It's a brilliant yet simple little box. Currently putting together a live set where the Sample is active doing some task or other, 90% of the set. (shortish set)
@@ChrisLodyMusic oh for sure! Too bad there isn't the ability to save patterns, and samples with Vosyr, or Caustic Editor for Volca Sample, using audio/mic in on computer or mobile device. (I use the Caustic Editor on A Tab S4, in combination with another Android audio editor (WaveEditor) right now, when working on any of my sample mechanics when destined for the Volca Sample. I've also been a Caustic user since 2012..it's why I finally picked up a Volca Sample. Too bad there is no way to send a clock sync signal to Caustic from a Volca (Or now the NTS-1, I just pre-ordered!)
@@DetroitMicroSound I've used caustic loads too. You could always send a clock signal from Caustic to a Volca by creating a panned click. I did a similar thing with Korg Ds10 on one of my videos recently. Should work a treat.
I just got that volca sample 2. As a Junglist I am super thankful you came across my feed. I will be trying to replicate this on mine. I dunno how to get those sample to my iPhone, but I will try to find out! Great vid!
@@ChrisLodyMusic I’m at the point where I’m using the Korg app to download samples to the Korg now. I am extremely new to this and I wish I could get a cheat sheet on how to get those dope jungle riffs on my volca 2
@TheThumbBreakers I guess there must be a tutorial for that somewhere on TH-cam. I know they tweaked things a bit for the Sample 2 so I don't really know how it works on that one
Oh thanks! I was thinking upgrading to something quite expensive... and now I see that, I might keep that little box and discover the other side of it!
The Sample Start knob on the V.Sample only goes up to 90% of the way through the sample at its max setting of 127, so we need to add on that amount of silence so 127 becomes the end of the sample. That makes it possible to cut it into a slice per step
Oh yeah it's useful that. It was something that was added in a firmware update I think because the standard method is a bit too wonky for pitched notes
Damn, that was some insane algebra to find that figure of 0.1111! Hey, I reckon the start points should be 0 (to 7), then 8, 16, finishing on 120 (to 127)?
Goat-X Damn I reckon you’re right. I’ve totally over thought that bit. I’ll have to update my working out in the description. Can’t believe I didn’t spot that!
You're brain was occupied with funky, fat beats.. I've found not all loops work well - some seem to stumble at the end, even when the original was looping nicely (that's why I checked out the maths for 0.1111). Some loops sound sublime though, when slowed right down, which mangles them up nicely!
Goat-X Ha yes that sounds like me 😄 Yeah after I tried it and found it sounded okay I thought I’d worked it out right, but I reckon the dirty nature of the loops I was using hid the glitch. Thanks for pointing that out!
This is some next level volca-ing! Question: does BPM factor into this at all? Does the overall tempo need to match the tempo of the original sample? I imagine if you are changing samples mid-break that they would sound off if different BPMs? Stoked to give this whirl, thanks for the tips & tricks!
Thank you. General speaking, no it doesn't matter about the BPM matching because we're slicing it up to play back in sections. But you'll get the best results if you're using loops that are close to the Volcas BPM as if we slow it down gaps between the slices will appear. Better to speed them up if anything as the slices will mute each other as the next starts playing which will still sound natural even if the BPM change is quite large. Have fun with it btw 😁
Cheers man. Just what I was after. 👍 New owner of a few machines, and I got this one knowing that somehow I'd be able to drop some breaks into it. I was gonna go down the slicing method and chop up samples for each part, and then sequence them accordingly, but your way looks much more fun! 🤘 Nice one, bruvvah!
No problem, I hope you have fun with it. I considered preslicing too but I realised that would use all the channels, so this is much more flexible which is nice
@@ChrisLodyMusic much fun has ensued! Need more boxes now 😂 Can you explain the 90% thing if you've got time to spare? I followed your instructions just fine and the loops are spot on. Just curious as to why we need to add that silence. Cheers man 👍
No problem. So in theory a sample position knob should enable you to start playing the sample from any point, but Korg took the decision to limit this to 90% of the way through to limit the amount of users thinking there unit was broken I assume as playing a sample from the end would make it silent. So the extra gap at the end offsets that 90% position to be at the end of our recorded audio and makes this possible
@@ChrisLodyMusic if you're at all interested, here's a little jam I just cranked out. All thanks to you mate! HTTPS://th-cam.com/video/UEbXhhR_hk4/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for this vid! I didn't know about that 90% thing with the start point, I'd always wondered why everything ended up a bit wonky when I assumed that 0,8,16... were the right points to chop at. Anyway, blowing my mind what I'm getting out of the volca sample now! Check out Pajens custom firmware if you haven't already, there's some really great things added in there.
_ s_p_a_r_k_e_s _ Well it because we have to fit the original sample loop length into 90% of the new sample. So 0.1111 is a ninth or 1 divided by 9. I skipped over that a bit just to speed things up a bit.
@@ChrisLodyMusic ok thanks but that's the bit I still don't get because 9/9 = 1 so 1/9 = 0.1111 which = 11.11%. I was thinking you would multiply the original sample length by 0.9 = 90%. sorry if I'm being thick.
_ s_p_a_r_k_e_s _ To be honest it took me a while to get my head round it so it’s kind of difficult to put into words. A diagram would have helped I think 😄
Thanks. I can only assume that Korg made it that way so turning the knob all the way up wouldn’t make the sound being played completely silent which could lead people to believe that it was broken. But honestly I’m not sure 🤷♂️
Update: I just got the Volca Sample 2/new generation, and idk if they changed it but the 90% thing does apply to the Sample 2 now too. Took me a while to figure that out but now it does work perfectly.
Oh really? I'm super confused then 😄 I've getting conflicting feedback from people about that so I'm not sure what to recommend. I need to get my hands on one really
@@ChrisLodyMusic Yeah it's pretty confusing, i guess the best thing to recommend is just checking beforehand by loading up a random drum sample (without silence) and turning up the start point all the way. Should be fairly easy to hear if it goes to 90% or 100% that way.
That's true, for now I've just changed the video info to say you might need to skip the adding silence bit. The manual does say 0-100% and for one guy that work but that doesn't mean they haven't changed it since in a firmware update I suppose
Thanks for this enlightening tutorial . Would you be able to use this method with an external midi controller to trigger instead of the key-touch strip?
Great tutorial, even a beginner like me managed to get it to work. Great tip in the comments regarding data transfer from the pc - nothing worked until I changed my sound card settings to disable sound enhancements. Some of the samples from the link you gave work better than others. Do I need to adjust the silence length from X 0.1111 to another value?
Thanks, nice to know it’s easy to follow 😁 You shouldn’t need to alter the method if the samples loop properly at the start though I imagine some loops might have swing/shuffle/triplets that might mess things up a bit. So yeah, some things might work better
ChrisLody I really appreciate you sharing your hard work on this. I don’t suppose you have a DnB sample I could use with this? I’d really love to make a liquid DnB track. You’ve definitely cracked it!
Silver Fox Sure, check the video description, there’s a link to some samples, forth link down. It’s not got the exact same sample I used but it’s a good bunch
I could'nt get it to work and I was losing my mind ... I've followed the video 10 times step by step and the result sounded ... choppy, just to realise the swing knob was turned on ... Anyways! thanks for the video! it's golden
Great video as usual, i have a korg sample with lots of samples on , but i want to take them off , so i can try stuff like this , is this possible (note i dont have my original samples)
I must be doing something wrong, but when I sequence the steps according to the 0,8,16,24/... starting point the run sounds all choppy and skippy and doesn't sound at all like the breaks supposed to
Ah that's interesting. I've had a few people report problems getting this to work so that's no doubt one of the problems, I'll add that info to the description 👍
Great, subscribed!! Curious which firmware you are using, with the latest update the sounds are all over the place. Maybe I am doing something wrong or maybe you are using V1.30. Could you check for me? You can see which firmware you are using if you hold down the record button while turning the machine on. Thanks in advance.
I'm on V1.42 and I'm pretty sure I would have used that during this tutorial, though I didn't make a note at the time but I'm a bit of a nerd for updates so it probably was 😄 I've had a few other mention having problems but so far I've had no problems myself
You could but if you divided a sample into 8 parts it would take up 8 sample slots and they would have to be spread over 8 different channels. Plus you don't have the option to edit rhythms at 16th note resolution
Really cool tutorial! It's a shame that we can't sample directly into it. The Audio pocket app isn't accessible with voice over. Other than that, I imagine this machine would be amazing.
Yeah it's a shame, it's the one thing I was hoping they would add for the Sample 2 but sadly not. I've had some fun capturing sounds using the Caustic for Volca Sample app but line in would be the aim and I don't have the hardware to make that a portable option
@@ChrisLodyMusic Do know if you can use rechargeable batteries with the Liven 8 bit warps without breaking it? I used rechargeable with a pocket operator and they broke it.
Oh wow that's weird. I use rechargeables in my Pocket Operators all the time and I've had no issues. Yes you can use they in the Liven series. There's even a setting to tell the unit which type of battery you're using so it knows when to give the battery low warning
Hey chris! When I plug my volca to my pc and I start making the cleaning, it appears ERROR crc , do you know something about it? It happens every tie I want to transfer data from my pc.
This almost certainly be related to the volume of the audio coming out of the pc so try adjust that. Some people have also mentioned that the volume of the volca itself can have an affect though it really shouldn't so try turning the volca down too
Not sure if breaks sounds better with 0.1 extra space or with 0.1111. It sounds odd". Could it be because im not setting the samples with thw right sample rate? I will try with 48khz. Or maybe mybsample lenghts should be 2s no more eight?(else it will sound hastend compares to the main beat) . I have the volca sample 1 with pajens firmware. frimware. Thanks for glorioso tutorial
0.1 is probably accurate enough for most things. It depends a lot on the original loop tbh. Sometimes they have a tail that can throw a spanner in the works so experiment and see what works for you. Changing to 48khz shouldn't make any difference because samples are automatically converted to 32khz before they're transferred. I never did get round to trying the Pajen firmware. One day maybe 😄
@@ChrisLodyMusic it sounds "better" now with my samples at 0.1. still not close to perfect. A tip would be to have the first sequence of the volca sample only with the chosen break of the pattern1 already set with motiom sequence, then turn off thwe motiom sequence so parameters dont get oveerwritten. Then ,one could be able to use other external sequencer to triggger al dthe other slots samples with other midi channel (pajen firmware). Although , another contra is that I need to check better the matter of sequencing because whenever you dont use the internal sequencer of the volca sample , the break stops being proceessed. So i have the need to manage between using breaks as you gently showed us while trying to trigger thw other samples without stopping the volca aample amen break. Do i need to check in depth the global midi settings?
Sorry I can't distribute the samples as they're from a magazine cover disc, the license of which doesn't allow that. It's something I should have thought about before I made the tutorial. Plus I don't think I even saved the .vsj file
Out of curiosity how did you come upon the whole 90% problem. Surly you read about it or someone showed you, especially the multiplying by point 1111. Or AREYOU the genius
Thanks 😄 I tried it the way you'd expect and I could tell something was wrong, so I checked the manual closely and it mentions the 90% bit in there luckily. Not obvious though, manuals a bit of a nightmare to look through
Thanks. The sample I chose to use was on Computer Music Magazines issue 156’s cover disc. So it’s not available to download, but there’s an alternate set of samples you can find linked in the description
@@ChrisLodyMusic Thank you mate ! Could you send me a text on my instagram please : Skankage I would like to ask you some questions ! :) Thanks alot for your answer ! :)
Thank you for the video, recently bought a korg volca sample is their a easier option to record all the existing samples with volca sample software,ie copy n paste the sound files straight onto computer with out manually recording every one? thank you in advance..
Jahrayson 888 Good question. I don’t think there is an easier option than that unfortunately, I don’t know of a pack of wavs available or anything like that. I imagine Korg have kept it that way to stop them being redistributed
Hey Chris i got one break loop on the sample and it plays back ok but it drops out after step 3 and 4. I made sure motion sequencing was on and all the value correct but i can’t seem to get the stretch right and issues with this when first trying or perhaps I’m doing something wrong. Thanks for the vid man!
I'm not sure why that would be to be honest. Are there notes recorded onto every step? I suppose that might be it. Also it's important that the beat loops correctly before it's edited for length
@@ChrisLodyMusic update: I figured out what I was doing wrong. After you make the calculations in Audacity I was imputing the 90% silence on the wrong place value so if it was say 13,848, I started it at like the 100k mark and it would be like 138,480 haha. So the whole sample was pretty much silenced. I had a good laugh when I realized what had happened. Appreciate the quick response and quality content Chris. Cheers from Virginia, USA
Is there still a place I could download the breaks used? the link in the description just goes to an album (which is excellent), but I would really like to get my hands on the drum loops to experiment.
Hi Chris.. trying to do this on a volca sample 2 and I'm getting choppy start/ends, indicating timing being off. Any thoughts? Have you heard anything about the sample2 being different?
Ah right. Wouldn't surprise me if they'd altered something like the 90% limit on the sample start knob. I don't own one but I'll have a look at the manual
Just had a look and they've changed the sample start knob to 0-100% so you should be able to skip the sample editing section of the video and go straight to programming the start times
If instead of audacity, I use a tracker so does that mean I just have make my sample fit lines 0-127 and then just add ONE more line. Or is it. FOUR extra lines? Can you think of this in terms of 16ths. Notes? If so how many. Do u add ont the. End
Does this method work the same with the new generation model, the 'volca sample2'? And can I use their dedicated librarian software instead of vosyr since the librarian software now supports USB file transfer (not sure if vosyr has usb transfer)
I would think so yes. As long as they haven't changed the sample position knob going up to 90% at maximum then it should work fine. It'd be interesting to find out
@@ChrisLodyMusic well im about to find out today!.... Wish vosyr had the USB transfer feature since at a first glance it doesn't appear that korgs sample 2 librarian software has the features to program the samples how you want. Anyway, thanks for the awesome tutorial. I plan to use this method on my own drum breaks I've created in FL studio. Cheers!
Hey, i know that I am a bit annoying. How can I restaure the factory samples on the sample2? What links, etc. I am talking about the sample presets of the 2 and not the 1. So sorry. Don't even have a daw soI'm new to this software integration.
No need to apologise, I love talking about this stuff 😁 I think I'm right in saying that if you download the Librarian from here you'll be able to reset the factory sounds. You may have to grab the zip file on the same page but I'm not too sure about that. You won't need a DAW to do that luckily www.korg.com/us/support/download/product/0/867/
@@ChrisLodyMusic Thanks! Turns out that Korg did a big mistake by not providing the factory sounds anywhere. Now it's impossible to get them back. You can't even restore the sounds from the 1. My Sample 2 will be for ever empty... unless I put my own sounds using audio pocket.
Oh yeah you could do, but I’m fond of precision myself 😄 Plus you still need to add on the chunk of audio to the wavs or it doesn’t work properly. Glad you like it though 👍🏻
Yes you can get other time signatures by shortening the pattern. A pattern can have anywhere from 1-16 steps plus you can use song mode to chain patterns together.
These loops specifically were from Computer Music Magazine issue 156's cover disc. They aren't available online anywhere so I added a link to some similar loops in the description
Trying to repeat this soluthion. But volca cut begining of all samples in active step row. On video i see it work another way. It is alternative firmware or somthing other secret?
No nothing secret. I've had the same feedback from a few people though. Make sure you have the latest firmware from Korg installed and make sure you have motion sequencing turned on for it to work is all I can suggest
I can confirm that on a Sample 2 you need to add silence at the end manually. Setting the start point to 127 only takes you 90% through the clip. I would never have noticed…
I attempting to put the samples, from vosyr to volca sample, doesn't seem to want to do it, not coming up data on volca sample? Any advice be most appreciated. Thank you ,
If you’re following the steps in the video and the volca isn’t responding the chances are it’s volume related so try turning your volume up to max. It’s also worth updating the firmware of your volca first as it seemed to make it a bit more sensitive the last time I did it
i have motion sequence on and i am still not able to change the start point of individual steps. when i hold an individual step and change the start point, the start point for every step changes along with it. so by the time i enter all the values in, every step is 127 .. any tips??
I'm not sure why this would happen, though it can sound like that what it's doing until you stop programming in data and then it'll play properly. Also make sure Record is off or you'll overwrite the start position for the steps in real-time instead. Try it with the sequencer stopped if you're still struggling
@@mszostek123 Ah excellent, glad you worked it out. I didn't know that could be a problem until recently, someone else mentioned it in the comments a few days ago actually
I do not know why you transfer a lot of loop samples, I mean, only just one loop sample transfered is really needed, right? And you can load the same loop in every slot
Well by doing that you can turn the sample selection knob to chop between different samples in real time for more variety. There's no point in putting the same sample in multiple slots as that just wastes memory
@@ChrisLodyMusic sorry I did not explained myself very well, I meant just only one transfer to Volca and then loading the same wav into each step as you did it. So now I've understood that the point is transfering diferent loops and changing between them with the sample knob for obtain that effect of variety loops
Just tried with the 2. It wont let me select any samples at all, when moving the sample knob it jist says 5.---? Not sure whats happening as i followed this to a t

Little explanation:
Start point knob value for the last step should be 120 (not 119. and all the others should be increased by 1.). This means last step start point will be on 85% of the length of the sample.
On original sample start point of the last step is on 93.75% of the lengh of the sample (15/16).
We need to make 93.75% we have into 85% we need. 93.75% / 85% = 110%.
You just closed a years long gap for me with the 90% info. Bless you sir
No problem, glad to help
1. Never even thought of using the Sample for creating D&B tracks.
2. Also had no idea you could hold the key to set parameters. Brilliant!

NOTE: Volca 'Sample 2' owners MIGHT be able to skip the adding silence bit, the manual says the sample start range is 0-100% but I'm not sure this is correct and I don't own a Sample 2. Make sure you update your firmware too as some earlier versions can't use motion sequencing on the Sample Start knob, thanks to Kyle Garner for pointing that out.
you can save time entering these values in vosyr and then load this sequence into the volca
Good idea, hadn't thought of that 👍
@@ChrisLodyMusic but I don't understand why you paste the little silence in the end of the sample? what's the math about that?
The sample start knob on the Volca only goes up to 90% when we need to control the full range so the silent section effectively shifts the end of the sample to 90% of the way through.
@@ChrisLodyMusic thank you very much, I'm gonna have some fun with it
Dude that very first beat you brought up reminded me of squarepusher.
Bloody love a bit of Squarepusher 😄
And for so long I didn't even knew about "Vosyr" existence! Thank you very much dear sir!
When you showed me the tempo changes I was definitely excited to get home and do this. I love combining breaks I make from scratch on the sample with my electribe for some really fun IDM jams and this will Absolutely make it even more fun for me. love your videos thanks
Awesome. Thanks for watching and have fun 😁

Yeah that's the good stuff 👌 Hope you find it useful
this method works with the Pajen firmware beta7 i can confirm!
thank you so much for this.
Oh awesome, thanks for letting me know. One day I will get round to trying the Pajen firmware 😄
Dude, thank you, I couldn't figure out why I couldn't spread a loop across the 16 steps. Great pack of samples too!
No worries, thanks for watching 👍🏻
Cheers.
Wow. This is SO cool! Time to dust off my Sample ánd some early 90's Brrreaks. Thanks very much for this!
Excellent, this is exactly what I was hoping it'd be used for 😁👌
Outstanding! That's a game changer.
Thanks 😄

Thank you, I’m sure I will 😁
Very useful video that cuts through the derth & din of so many generic demo vids for the volca sample, thanks
Thank you. I've made my fair share of generic demo videos too btw 😄
Yeah a bit of extra memory would be good for a live set. So would some more save slots. 10 soon get used up
@@ChrisLodyMusic oh for sure!
Should work a treat.
this is totally and utterly brilliant and I love it.
Thank you 😁 hope you find it useful 👍🏻
I just got that volca sample 2. As a Junglist I am super thankful you came across my feed. I will be trying to replicate this on mine. I dunno how to get those sample to my iPhone, but I will try to find out! Great vid!
Nice one, glad to help 😁 There may be a way you can edit the samples directly on your phone using another app but I've never tried that
@@ChrisLodyMusic I’m at the point where I’m using the Korg app to download samples to the Korg now.
@@ChrisLodyMusic I am scanning the net for info on doing so! So far, no luck yet.
Oh wow, didn't know you could hold down a step in step mode while the sequence is playing to alter motion sequencing data for that step.
Yeah it's really useful that, great for getting some really precise movement into a track

Fantastic. Would love to collect together a whole lot of glitchy samples to give this a crack on. Well done and thanks.
Yeah that would work great. Hope you have fun 👍🏻
Oh thanks! I was thinking upgrading to something quite expensive... and now I see that, I might keep that little box and discover the other side of it!
Awesome glad you found it helpful 👍
@@ChrisLodyMusic why are you adding 10% of blank at the end of the sample?
The Sample Start knob on the V.Sample only goes up to 90% of the way through the sample at its max setting of 127, so we need to add on that amount of silence so 127 becomes the end of the sample. That makes it possible to cut it into a slice per step
@@ChrisLodyMusic oh ok!! Thanks!! Never noticed that... yeah still a lot to discover on that amazing little box :D :D

Great idea! For me it is much easier to adjust the startpoints directly from Vosyr before uploading everything to volca
Yeah that's a good idea, I wish I'd thought of that before I made this tutorial 😄
I didn't know bout the semitones function!!!

Thanks for pointing that out!
muchas gracias bro. Saludos
Nice work!
Thanks 😄
Dig it! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks 😁
Cheers man. Just what I was after. 👍
New owner of a few machines, and I got this one knowing that somehow I'd be able to drop some breaks into it.
I was gonna go down the slicing method and chop up samples for each part, and then sequence them accordingly, but your way looks much more fun! 🤘
Nice one, bruvvah!
No problem, I hope you have fun with it. I considered preslicing too but I realised that would use all the channels, so this is much more flexible which is nice
@@ChrisLodyMusic much fun has ensued! Need more boxes now 😂
Can you explain the 90% thing if you've got time to spare? I followed your instructions just fine and the loops are spot on. Just curious as to why we need to add that silence.
Cheers man 👍
No problem. So in theory a sample position knob should enable you to start playing the sample from any point, but Korg took the decision to limit this to 90% of the way through to limit the amount of users thinking there unit was broken I assume as playing a sample from the end would make it silent. So the extra gap at the end offsets that 90% position to be at the end of our recorded audio and makes this possible
@@ChrisLodyMusic legend mate.
Nice one. 👍🤘👌

So awesome, definitely going to purchase a sample very soon!
_ s_p_a_r_k_e_s _ Thanks for watching. Yeah they’re pretty good so don’t think you’ll regret it
@@ChrisLodyMusic good to know! could you tell me where the 0.111 figure comes from? It's been bugging me lol
This is great. I wish I understood why 127 is only 90%of the sample length. That is voodoo
Thanks. I can only assume that Korg made it that way so turning the knob all the way up wouldn’t make the sound being played completely silent which could lead people to believe that it was broken. But honestly I’m not sure 🤷♂️
This is very clever mate
Thanks very much 😁
Thanks Chris

You’re welcome 👍
Fabulous! Thanks
Useful vid good sir
Cheers man 😊
Thanks for this enlightening tutorial . Would you be able to use this method with an external midi controller to trigger instead of the key-touch strip?
Thanks. I'm not sure about that to be honest, I'll have to experiment and get back to you
Great tutorial, even a beginner like me managed to get it to work.

Volca with 'Pajen firmware' owners....can we skip the section about adding silence to the samples?
I'm not sure. I've never actually got round to looking at that to be honest 😄 If it changes the range of the sample start from 90% to 100%, then yes.
Did it work with pajen firmware? (Not adding that silence ?)
Could I slice the samples into eighth or quarter notes and do the same thing
You could but if you divided a sample into 8 parts it would take up 8 sample slots and they would have to be spread over 8 different channels. Plus you don't have the option to edit rhythms at 16th note resolution
Think I found a good website now hopefully.
I have a bsp. Trying to integrate these things. And still need to practice my sequencing .

Hi Chris.. trying to do this on a volca sample 2 and I'm getting choppy start/ends, indicating timing being off.
End
If you could make the sample last 9 lines and then save the sample out for 10 lines long that should do it

Question: Can this Volca only produce 4/4 beats - what about 5/8 or 9/8 beats?
Yes you can get other time signatures by shortening the pattern. A pattern can have anywhere from 1-16 steps plus you can use song mode to chain patterns together.
11.11 the dark stranger
Where can i get a load of sexy drum loops like that?
These loops specifically were from Computer Music Magazine issue 156's cover disc. They aren't available online anywhere so I added a link to some similar loops in the description
@@ChrisLodyMusic thank you
what’s the name of the program in the computer? that recognize de volca
It's called Vosyr. You can find it here www.frederikson-labs.com/#download
@@ChrisLodyMusic thanks :)
@@ChrisLodyMusic wow on video is looks like u set loop on, but it motion sequence on. Thank you it's really fantactic effect!
Ah good glad you worked it out. I guess it's the 720p that's at fault there, my tutorials are a lot less blurry now 😄
I can confirm that on a Sample 2 you need to add silence at the end manually. Setting the start point to 127 only takes you 90% through the clip. I would never have noticed…
Awesome, thanks for confirming that 👌
I attempting to put the samples, from vosyr to volca sample, doesn't seem to want to do it, not coming up data on volca sample? Any advice be most appreciated. Thank you ,
If you’re following the steps in the video and the volca isn’t responding the chances are it’s volume related so try turning your volume up to max. It’s also worth updating the firmware of your volca first as it seemed to make it a bit more sensitive the last time I did it
Thank you, I give it ago, hopefully it works
i have motion sequence on and i am still not able to change the start point of individual steps. when i hold an individual step and change the start point, the start point for every step changes along with it. so by the time i enter all the values in, every step is 127 .. any tips??
I'm not sure why this would happen, though it can sound like that what it's doing until you stop programming in data and then it'll play properly. Also make sure Record is off or you'll overwrite the start position for the steps in real-time instead. Try it with the sequencer stopped if you're still struggling
@@ChrisLodyMusic I still had the original firmware from when I bought it (pre-release date). I updated and everything works as it should. Thank you
@@mszostek123 Ah excellent, glad you worked it out.
Hello does anyone know of a good website to download vosyr for Windows. Found a mac version so fah, thank you
The main website for it has Windows and Mac versions www.frederikson-labs.com/#download
Just tried with the 2. It wont let me select any samples at all, when moving the sample knob it jist says 5.---? Not sure whats happening as i followed this to a t
Hmm strange, that's what the Sample does when there isn't any samples loaded into the device. I have no experience with the Sample 2 but I assume it's the same
@@ChrisLodyMusic its all good i did a rookie tired move and didnt have the sync in the correct input 😂. Will let you know how it goes attempt 2
@@ChrisLodyMusic all good it works a treat and confirmed did not haveto add the sample silence. Perfect!!! Exactly what i needed. Your a legend.
Public disclaimer: Dont!!! Play in the studio when tired, ya do dumb crap lol
Oh I see 😄 Yeah I'd be interested to see if it works. Don't know if you saw my notes in the description but you should be able to skip adding silence on the Sample 2, but not had any feedback from anyone to confirm this yet
@@ChrisLodyMusic yeah mate i saw your notes figured i would confirm no silence needed 👍. Baught this for the exact purpose of chopping break loops, then i wanted to smash it trying to make it happen. So this tutorial was literally the godsend. Much much props
I just wish the Volcas Samples could play 65 bars
Dudeee!1!
😎
@@ChrisLodyMusic I am going to get a Volca Sampler, just because of your channel. Will be shopping some nice amenbreaks and acid lines your way.
@@ChrisLodyMusic What is the best safest place to get one from (shipping to Bulgaria)? Thank you Master C
Please answear!!! i can't change length (start) step sample .. for every step personally//// parameter changing for all steps then i push on one///
It sounds like you need to update the firmware, earlier versions had this problem apparently
@@ChrisLodyMusic what the title of freshly firmware..???? can you tell me where i can download this
It's here. Details on how to use it are included www.korg.com/us/support/download/software/0/370/1475/
@@ChrisLodyMusic ok. i did what needed,but System version 1.42
If the current system is version 1.42, the display
will be lit as shown. Your volca sample is already up to date.
