- Today we're installing what looks to be the ultimate screen mod for the Game Boy Color. Not only are the results impressive, but it's actually a pretty easy mod that is perfect for a beginner.

If they get oled mods for the gba I think I’ll do that
Also a "Play-and-Charge kit" simple rechargeable battery with a type C connection somehow
It's not oled but I mean the SP exists with a backlit screen. You're not going to get more pixels than what's already programmed so the oled swap is really only for the backlight.
I mean if you just want to have the original GBA with a back light I guess it makes sense to swap
SP isn't the same as a backlit regular GBA, its ALL about that form factor
Yes, especially since you can play all gameboy games on the gba
Ambernic rg35xx
FYI the screens were NOT made 20 years later. The screens are excess stock manufactured for the Blackberry Q10 from 2013.
The New 3DS XL needs an OLED screen. I can only imagine how great it would be to play all Nintendo retro handheld games on actual hardware with an OLED touch screen. I can only dream. 😢
Yeah, major missed opportunity for Nintendo. A Definitive Edition OLED 3DS XL would’ve been hugely popular.
@@Lauren_Cthat was kinda before OLEDS were more main stream , Vita OLED doesn’t count, it was a very early OLED and was kind of ahead of it’s time like the psp
@@Gawlakman The New 3DS was launched in 2014, with the XL version in 2015. This was well after AMOLED displays hit their prime.
The OG models can be forgiven, but certainly not the “New” models, and the Switch absolutely should’ve launched with OLED.
@Gawlakman It counts for being among the first mainstream OLED devices, yes.
The whole 3DS lineup has terrible screens it's painful to look at. Unless you won an ips lottery then its somewhat decent.
I don't know what's more surprising, the fact that the GameBoy Color has an OLED screen or the fact that it has a Touchscreen!
You just hope the mod preserves link cable trade functionality and infrared for mystery gift for Pokémon Crystal.
Hot damn! That looks freaking fantastic! If the AAs were replaced with a USB-C rechargeable battery this would be perfect.
I think those do exist don’t they? At least they do for the GBA
@@bryantgutierrez9191 They do. You can even put LEDs in these with translucent buttons/cases if you want to be really fancy.
You can. That option is out there, as I did it with my GBC mod.
Before installing a battery mod there are couple of things to consider. First, li-ion battery in these mods doesn’t last significally longer than regular 1,5 V batteries. Secondly, you can’t play with the console while charging, and charging takes quite a while. So rechargeable AA batteries might be more suitable option here.
Yep there is mod kit you can do that too
I would like something like this for a GBA...
But good to see an OLED for GBC.
I suspect that it's on the horizon. It's probably just a matter of sourcing an appropriately sized AMOLED screen for the GBA.
I immediately thought: Now that's cool but I have an Analogue Pocket and am fine with that.
Well you would hope so with how much you spent
ive thought it over and decided im just avoiding buying one of those period; I can't stand dogshit selling practices like they do to artifically create scarcity and keeping their "premium" aura. Maybe second hand if cheap enough but resellers are just as nasty as the company themselves. Was a lot happier buying a $100 metal shell for a modded GBA and it ended up looking significantly better than the AP
@@karenbetanerd4396 the funky playing Gameboy is pretty awesome too for less than $100
Not original hardware
Now if only the dpad was good on the AP
Imagine if Nintendo remanufactured old Nintendo handhelds with higher quality OLED screens and made them USB-C rechargeable.
Reissue cartridges. They could make a killing charging like $10-20 per GB game.
Another thing is even those e-ink displays for OG Gameboy. The batteries would probably last several weeks on a single charge.
@@skycloud4802e-ink can only be used for reading. The refresh rate is abysmal. Normal screen uses energy to display an image. e-ink uses energy to move things around to change the image.
I could imagine Nintendo selling them as both mini consoles and controllers for Nintendo switch online; that would also sell the the switch like experience: play on the GBA or on the TV using it as a controller! Big downside though they probably wouldn't have a slot for the games and you'll have to rely on Nintendo's online service which is doomed to be shut down in 6 years so you'll lose all your games and it becomes a brick (until hackers figure it out)
@@skycloud4802 Meh, e-ink screens are still not that great. You can mostly get 15fps out of them with terrible ghosting artifacts.
that little spec of dust on your camera is driving me insane

Input latency and pixel response times are two different things. Response times can contribute in small part to worse input latency but generally speaking response times account for the time that it takes a pixel to fully transition between colors, the reason that OLEDs near perfect response times matter is because it cuts down severely on motion blur compared to a poorly performing LCD, not because it reduces input latency.
I've been modding gameboys for a few months now and I'm highly addicted to it. It can be expensive but it's so much fun.
Nice, I've been looking for a beginner project to start soldering. This project might be it. Thanks for sharing!
Just did this for my wife's clear purple Gameboy Color for mother's day (it wasn't the only thing she got, don't worry). She kinda rolled her eyes, but then played a few sessions and I think she likes it. The screen is absolutely gorgeous. Warning for anyone doing it, USE THE SCREWS THAT COME WITH THE NEW CASE. The originals don't fit as well in the new case and it's easy to strip them trying to get them in.
Great video! The blue shell looks nice. I made a video myself modding with a clear red shell. I didn't use any Kapton tape just the clear film and it is working fine (let's hope it continues) the amoled screen is definitely amazing and was an easy first mod, definitely worth doing 😊
This setup is SUPER CLEAN!!
Had no idea the gameboy color units had gotten so expensive. I have an old one I was going to backlight with LOCA and decided against it. Would definitely attempt this though.
Did one myself yesterday! Loving it!!!
Is there gonna be a gba oled mod?
They took old BB Q10 screens for this one, not sure the equivalent exists for GBA size. But if it does I'm all for it.
Yep getting it OLED screen was what I was looking for
This screen is looking extreme beautiful
I thought it was a Dankpods vid because of the green background LOL
this is dope AF.
these sunday episodes are my fave. i'll never do these mods (skill issue) but i love watching them being done. john has mad skills
I would’ve removed the plastics tape covering the screen after the whole mod is done.
Yeah same here 😅
Nice one a great mode, Definitely a huge screen improvement
Yeah i have oled gameboy bought it 3 weeks or so ago stunning getting a 2nd one from ebay seller exact same love it
Ali express used to have these with a pre cut shell for 55$
They still do, I picked one up a few weeks ago. The only issue I ran into was possibly finding the specific color shell I wanted, but in the end I was able to find a seller who had the color I wanted.
*waves in spawn*
In spawn waves
She spawns on my wave
Best not, Todd McFarlane may get you for Copyright.
He's camping the spawn
@@V4Nowas he should thief
Now that I think about it… the screen controller on this display probably has a lot more transistors than the CPU in the Gameboy…
I thought you were gonna say it’s bad. Glad it’s mostly good. What I’m hoping is that this is a gateway for psp getting OLED screen mods.
I seriously love this mod. I will do it when I can get my hands on a GBC that needs a new screen.
Yes, i love when you do this kinda of video. ❤
John: “Great project for a beginner who’s never done many mods”
Me: (watching the video) 😵💫
Looks amazing
Yooooooooo, that’s is AWESOME, it looks sooooo good!
Looking forward to an sp oled mod!
That's pretty sweet. Nice mod
I remember using the street lights to light up my screen when my mom would drive us to wherever at night.
Only a matter of time until we finally have a GBA OLED
Was wondering when you would get this mod and do it
How did you get the GBC's screen to look so clear in the opening shot?
OLED changed my life
Screw the Gameboy, what we really need are emulation devices like Miyoo and Anbernic with OLED.
Its a great screen and kit and yeah they're Q10 oled screens that were meant for smartphones pretty much. The previous best laminated screen was a Q5 and ips.
I love doing the screen mods…. I’ve done the earlier ones where the lens and screens are two parts… man finger prints and dust…. But both my dmg and gbc came out good… then I finally did the funny playing ipsv2 for gbc… man that came out great.. but spawn wave have you done the Funny Playing FP-GBC…. It has 2 cores in the program… gb and gbc… but not only that it is a completely new motherboard with no Nintendo components in it… but you do get to choose your case, buttons, membranes and usb-c rechargeable!!! I have built 6 of those also… no soldering just plug n play… oh and the console is upgradable too
The mod I did was install an emulator on my OLED iPhone, looks great
Can’t wait for the switch lite oled mod to drop in July
This one hopefully gonna be fantastic
I did this for a friends GBP. He had some burn in and we just put the new screen in.
This is cool. Would be great if it was available for more systems.
I see the Zedlabz stickers. They’re my go-to for video game mod parts.
Beautiful change 👍
ohhhhhhhhh!!!!! ohhhhhohohoh!!!! damn I wish I can experience game boy color in OLED like this when I was a kid
Does anyone else miss the Hammer in Spawn Wave videos
I totally forgot about that
I need context having only been watching him since 2020
@@deeko_z86 Here's why the Atgames Blast is a waste of 20 dollars. Believe that is the name of spawnwave's episode with the hammer. 👍
All the time, and there were a lot of videos with the hammer
For GBC’s the screen replacements need to preserve original aspect ratio to be worth it. Also because mods to gbc’s playing pokemon games need the link cable motherboard functionality preserved. Sometimes hardware mods don’t take that into consideration.
What screen comes with the FUNNYPLAYING FPGBC KIT? Would this OLED work with it?
Do the screen fits the gbc you make yourself kit thats around?
We need an Oled Screen for the Vita Slim 2000...
looks pretty good.
I wish that these kind of mods were created for the original fat gray DS. I still have mine from childhood but its basically in an unusable state, because the shell turned yellowish and those aftermarket shells feel really cheap, and on top of that I have a cracked screen on top due to someone accidentally sitting on it, and after seeing the repair videos to take off the top screen to replace it with another inferior screen, I would only do it if I could get a screen that looked as good as this OLED one.
Boxing up my Game boy Color and sending it to Spawnwave!
He’ll do stuff like that for commissions?
Changing to oled is like an instantaneous Game Boy Color game remaster! 😂 It's that amazing.
A Game Gear oled mod needs to happen as well !
I wouldn't mind having an OLED GB/GBC/GBA and think about getting one of these mods... but then I remember that I got an Anbernic that has an OLED screen already and I won't have to be locked into a single system with the limited legit games that I own!
Very tempting to try out but I have sooo many other handhelds and GB/GBC plays great on my RGB30 though I have yet to find or purchase a GB dumper for my carts.
This may be my first soldering project then 🤔’
Do we know if this is compatible with the FunnyPlaying FPGA Gameboy Color?
Screens have come so far in 30 years 😮
Amazing. Wish i didn't get rid of old hardware.
I already have a IPS GB I wouldn't mind upgrading because I got a DMG style shell and buttons. Now that I got a real DMG GB it seems a little redundant. I can sell the old dmg shell kit w/IPS screen together.
Anyone know if there are any plans for an OLED GBAsp? I’ve got one that I’m planning on screen swapping, but now I want to wait incase we get a an OLED screen mod
Make a video on soldering. For anyone afraid they'll burn their fingers, set off their smoke alarm, and melt the plastic case down to liquid.
Are the grid like scan lines available? Theres a reason I can't get away from either an ags-101 or an analogue pocket using the ags-101 filter.
7:14 it looks so much better with those. 0:09 this comparison looks worse in oled imo
I’d love to see an OLED done specially for the original Gameboy.
Someday, someone will make my Switch Lite OLED Screen. Love that small form factor.
Do they make emulstor csrts for GBC?
Does this disable the IR Feature of the Gameboy Color?
Steam Deck Oled users: Look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power.
The only question I have is, is one of the logo options the original multi-color?
no
It will be awesome to see an OLED Sega game gear and…come on!…the gamegear deserves some love too. 😩
OLED screens have many advantages: Bright, colorful, and power efficient with true black pixels.
I guarantee that this will suffer from burn in, especially since video games have static HUDs.
Cool! I cant wait for GBA version
Is there an option for the "COLOR" in the logo to be multicolor like the actual logo?
no
Look what Taki started. 😁
Iv been waiting to mod my GBA with an OLED, come on OLED GBA!
Can you make a video about a Switch shell change?
That's so cool. Too bad my Game Boy is lost and gone.
Is there one of these for advance?
I need to find stl files for handhelds so I can custom make my own shells.
Off Topic: I thought I had a dead or frozen pixel during this video. You had a tiny spot showing on your camera near your ear.
I did this very recently with a kit that used a screen for a blackberry haha
I'll stick with my Q5 LED screen it's got all the same functions without the touchpanel it's not worth the upgrade for me personally. Others I'd say if this is for you also look into the Q5 LED it's also a retormodding screen the utilitizez the same shell mod used in this video and will most likely be cheaper of a screen due to it being out longer and not a touchpanel. It has all the same functions as this screen by the way with all the features just being activated by a touch sensor ribbon that sticks to the top of the handheld near the IR port.
looks like a black berry screen still a cool mod
Where do you get this?!
Would love to see an original gameboy with a OLED screen
🙃
Anybody have a real quick "Intro to soldering" video that would be just enough to get them through this mod?
It was my first time doing soldering. Holy fuck did my hand shake, but i got the power wire attached to the switch and damn does the screen looks amazing.
For me the original, pretty worn pads were a better choice. The Dpad's knob was a bit shorter on the aftermarket dpad and for some reason switching the dpad itself to the OEM it still didn't feel that good and for some reason the inputs were hard to get right. Feels like the aftermarket dpad membrain wasn't that "compatible" with the OEM dpad.
for some odd reason, the OEM dpad and the OEM membrain doesn't make the OEM dpad feel like OEM, but it works the best. I can only blame the shell.
its magical to see a touch screen on a Gameboy lol ive got a analogue pocket and ambernic handheld, so no i wont be doing this! but i love seeing people come up with ways to modernize old hardware, and repurposing already p[roduced components, even better!
How about hardware upgrades? I wanna see the og gameboy run Pokémon emerald
love it, but wish it was a gba Advanced, DS, or even 2ds upgrade.
3ds would be amazing, but I don't think we'll ever see a 3d IPS Drop-In screen.
GOD TIER would be if someone made an OLED screen upgrade for regular Switch, or Switch LITE
Could you do this for nds?
“Drop-in AMOLED replacement…”
*proceeds to show a decidedly and definitionally not drop-in screen*
There are drop-in TFT screens, but any mod that requires soldering and cutting or replacing the shell isn’t a drop-in mod.
I’d be interested in seeing your opinion on the Funnyplaying FPGBC, which is a modern fpga GameBoy Color, using no original Nintendo components.
came to say the same thing
