  • I am a 27-year-old female solo sailor beginning my circumnavigation. My boat is a 27 foot sloop named Gecko. Follow me on my journey as I learn about heavy-weather sailing, the trials of being solo, and my adventures in paradise. This week I sail overnight from St. John’s bashing into headwinds to arrive at St. Martin the following evening.

It actually makes it easier to understand what this sailor is about by watching the videos “in reverse,” as I have done. She’s young, and seems so knowledgeable that a video like this appears rehearsed or staged. But after viewing a later video with her mother and getting a synopsis of her early years and upbringing, it makes perfect sense. It can be quite perilous to assume that one can merely “follow a dream” in viewing her sailing around the world. Success, in this case, stems from years of experience and knowledge gained living on the water. This level of expertise is not gained from watching videos, or jus treading books or taking classes- it must be lived, as she has done.

I like the orderliness and simplicity of your boat. I don’t think I’ve seen a sailboat with empty storage. Wonderful setup! Please keep an eye on rusting on the bottom of the propane tanks. You do NOT want to be near one should it fail. Please leave missile launches to the professionals.

@joe jitsu In Vietnam the US use to drop propane tanks with detonators from aircraft and set them off just above the ground. The pressure wave killed absolutely every living thing in it's path.

Meals in Jars! In February I had been sailing about 4 weeks single handed up and down the Strait of Malacca. Very busy place to sail, no time for nothing. Weeks before that trip I prepared about 12 jars of cooked meals which I just heated up when time to cook proper meals was short. Leaving the helm for 30 seconds to pull the rubber seal on a jar, firing up the stove and pore the food in a pot was easy and quick. Especially for overnight passages and boats without refrigeration abilities should try that old techniques to preserve food. There are lots of tutorials on TH-cam about how to prepare food in jars. But for you, and taking an eye on you gas consumption, maybe you could look for a nice somebody who allows you to use their kitchen in a house. For me, it was even fun took cook.
    Cheers!

I love that you have been hands on on all repairs and refurbishment. In preparation for joining the live aboard/cruising community here shortly, I have watched tons of videos and learned that fixing and repairing things are a constant on a boat and if your not a fix it type person, this isn’t a lifestyle for you but I disagree. I was not raised around a father to teach me how to repair and fix stuff but I have never been afraid to learn and get my hands dirty. I find it encouraging to watch videos of people who have chased their sailing dream and never let what they didn’t know, stop them. Really loving your videos. Hope we cross paths one day!

"life lines" are the fence around the boat- which she has. I call them death lines because they give false impression of safety. I think what you mean is "jack-line" -a cable securely fastened at the bow and stern that sailors clip into with their safety harness. Single handing a boat with hank on jib and halyard winch on the mast is irresponsible. I asked her where I could talk to her about safety...no response.... So I will just encourage you, you are right, she needs to be a sailor, not a casualty!

Loved listening to your tour. I had a Bukh 10hp one cylinder diesel in my old Folkboat 25'. It was a bugger to start from cold or even in the cold. I solved the problem by fixing a glowplug across the air intake. Heating the cold air before it went into the engine. It was much easier to start and caught after the second revolution instead of the 5-6 cycle. It made a big difference and a simple modification... I think the lack of engine power could be your prop as my Bukh pushed my 3 ton Wooden Folkboat very well, If you can give me your prop dim and model of yacht I'll check it against what I know about Bukh's.
I listened to that fact that you were a well travelled back packer and believe we may have crossed paths about 2 years ago. I was driving a hire car with truck drivers in it when we collected one driver on the M4 roundabout (England) near Swindon and also picked up a hitchiker who was on her way to Bristol... Was that you?
    Best of Luck

Thanks .My own boat is older type 1972 era and 27 feet and doing it up to go blue water sailing hopefully 2020 . Like your modifications but my cooking will be simple two burner gas and always fry everything as I do not do much in terms of complex cooking . I will mostly do onshore do a big buy of meat fish and similar and cook it all up and then self can it in glass jars and reheat the canned stuff on the way . I wont do much tin cans from shops as they contain too many chemicals . I wont do wheat flour rice oats as eating grass is for grass eating animals like cows and very toxic to humans . .I might buy a female micro goat available from west Africa small dog sized critters and keep it in a cage on the deck and goat milk it to supply real good milk for my coffee and tea . Canned or powdered milk is full of toxic chemicals . I am researching how to grow mushrooms as I love mushroom . I dont know if its possible but it seems these need a bag of saw dust some suitable mushroom spores and keep the bag in dark corner of boat and out pops mushrooms every day for several weeks. I cant hack the idea of growing insects worms or snails to eat so that not for me a solution but seems Asians are very keen on that insect solution . The French can do snails no problem . Hopefully I will catch fish on route and will rig up solar stove/grill and a barbecue run from wood from the sea and look how to make sun dyed fish . I am looking into making my own fruit juices and glass bottling them myself as fruit in bulk is much cheaper . Drinking Water is critical so I will invest in lots of glass bottles and bottle suitable water myself . Avoid plastic bottles for water as the plastic leeches out a chemical that is similar to estrogen hormone what women have lots of . This fake hormone disrupter replaces the real hormone and triggers cancers mostly in the breasts where women accumulate the most of this hormone . For men it creates man breast and other problems and testicular cancers . Lots of ways and ideas to eat healthy . The modern packed foods from supermarkets are often very toxic . I knew one sailor who did a yaught delivery boat starting in in Portugal . He was beside a sardine tin food factory in Portugal so he bought lots of tinned sardines to eat for the delivery journey to south africa . After he got to South Africa and finished the delivery he had to stay in hospital for weeks in intensive care from toxic poisoning . It seems that sardines naturally have a small amount of toxins in them which when you eat sardines occasionally will not be problem . However if you only eat sardines every day the toxin from sardines accumulates and can kill kill you . So mono diets are not good. Fish in the Carrabeen region have some nasty problem to avoid .The details of this fish problem I don't know about . Bon appite as my French sailor friends say when we meet up at sailing locations and eat together

To save power on your sailboat you can use something like this to charge many things directly from your batteries to the things you are going to need charged. It works great and uses less power by not using the invertor

I can't decide if I'm most impressed by your doing all this (including great refit) on your own, or if I like that you're batshit crazy! I think its both. Love the quirky.

It's interesting that you find this space large because you only had a backpack before. Most of us would be really cramped living on your boat. It's all perspective.

I have said it already but daaamn, I love that galley setup. Specifically the storage area (pantry?). I was thinking, wow, lots of headroom, but I'm thinking you might not be as tall as me. What's the headroom in there? The Dutch have a word that I think is appropriate for your boat - Gezellig. You'll have to look it up :)

There's probably headroom for someone up to 5'10. My taller friends just stick their head out the companionway when they cook!

Wow, really love your videos, beautifully done. i was in awe of your courage, undergoing a big ocean journey all by yourself. Good for you. I am definitely cheering you on and look forward to watching more. Very inspiring. I really like that simplicity of your boat, I think that is the way to go. you will have many fewer problems because of that. Also like the music, you really have a beautiful voice. I think you should definitely incorporate you music into the videos. Keep up the good work!
