- Hermit crabs are found in tropical coasts of Indo Pacific region ,Atlantic and West Caribbean coast
They have a life span of more than 40 years , hence can be kept as pets for years.
They do not have hard shells and adopt any discarded shell for their protection.
They eat fruits , vegetables ,sea foods , rotten wood and foliage.

Hi! I’m a fellow hermit crab owner who’s had her crabs for about a year and a half now, and I’d like to point out a couple things. First, the substrate needs to be at least 6 inches for the crabs to properly molt. If the substrate is not up to the adequate amount, the crab will surface molt. You’ll also want to switch calcium sand for play sand, as “hermit crab” advertised sand can harm your crabs. You also should mix eco earth in to get a good mix of substrate. Second, painted shells can be harmful for hermit crabs, so I’d recommend switching those for regular, natural shells. I’d also recommend adding a log or some vines for your crabs to climb on or hide under. Hermit crabs love to climb! I hope you keep these things in mind! For everyone that reads this, thanks! Thank you for your advice. I will take care about sand bed height as well as logs for climbing.Since I bought them from super market they already had painted shells.Had given them normal shells and they have adopted those .

Just a few things
1 calcium sand isn’t good hermit as it hardens when it gets wet and can get them stuck in there, shell play sand can be bought from any hardware store and it’s only $5 for 50 pounds. Also you need 6-8 inches you definitely didn’t put that
2. Painted shells are toxic to hermit crab
As they eat parts of their shell and paint chips off.
3. You need a bigger tank at least 5-10 gallons a crab.
4. Hermit crab need both salt an fresh water at least enough to completely submerge
You should use instant ocean aquarium salt it’s the best you can you use
5.hermit crabs are tropical pets so they need at least 70%-75% humidity and 70°-80°
Temperature.
6. Make sure you feed them lots of fruits and nuts hermit crabs and eat tons of human food just google to make sure it’s safe.
I’m not saying this to me rude but I wish I had someone to tell me this when I first got mine.and with proper care now 8 years later their still doing great

I'm sure you meant well, but I wish you had researched how to properly set up a crabitat before posting a public video using only stuff you bought from the beach shop. They're hardy animals, but they need very specific care and crabitat setup in order to live 40+ years like in your video description. Hopefully by now you have read a bit more from reputable online groups and made the necessary changes that your crabs surely deserve. Good luck.
If you are watching this, please know that hermit crabs need 2 water dishes, both purified with aquarium purifier, tap water and/or chlorinated water WILL kill hermit crabs, theyre substrate also needs to be at least 3x the depth of your largest crab, its also a good idea to mix coconut substrate in with the sand. Hermit crabs also need a maintained temp of around 80 degrees F, and a humidity level of around 80 - 90%, spray their tank a few times a day with dechlorinated water to keep the humidity up, also dont use painted items in the tank, even "non-toxic" painted items, and keep lots of non-painted shells in the tank for the hermit crabs

I never wanted one, but when I was picking Winkles for my parents to use I got a shock to find - not another black slimy mollusc, but legs and claws! I only discovered it once I got home, so I couldn't throw it back. I'm trying desperately to get ideas on taking care of him at least until I am able to go back to that beach and release him.

I’m sorry, but your substrate is no adequate for what they need, first sand in general can harm them by getting stuck in their shell and harming them, and second for 4 hermit crabs i would recommend at least a 30 gallon tank so they have space to molt,climb,and hide. remember they are prey animals so they are also nocturnal.

I highly recommend the channel Crab Central Station for comprehensive tips on setting up a proper crabitat for your pets. Your intentions mean well, but they need natural shells (the painted ones are toxic), much deeper sand, and a much bigger tank plus a way to control the heat and humidity levels and things for them to climb and explore that mimc their natural environment. That tank you placed them in is nowhere near the size you need for that many crabs. And so many things are toxic to them. They need both a salt water and fresh water pool that have been treated and that are big enough for them to submerge in with something to help them climb in and out.

Please get rid of those horrid painted shells. Their probably toxic to the crabs especially if it chips off. Also another person commented that you have to use sand? You can use sand but eco earth works just as well if your going for a forest type set up. Make sure to have a calcium source in the enclosure too,even sprinkling cuttle fish bone works well.

hello i used to have 2 hermit crabs they died because of adding sea sponges and giving them painted shells also need bigger tank dont commit same mistakes otherwise good!!!!
