      Koala Kid 23 .. No, crabs are timid by nature, I don't handle or play with mine but princess isn't scared at all and the other 2 can be at times it just depends.

      Do you have to separate the hermit crabs because I herd when a hermit crab is molting they can eat each other.

      Damian Rodriguez ... if they are used to each other and similar sizes then they can be together :)

    I just rescued 3 from a party that abused them. I sooooooo appreciate having u post this to help me set up these new guys their forever home. I’m very nervous bc they went str8 down under the peat moss and refuse to come up all day. I just hope they r ok and will do my best to do good by them. I just wished I could’ve saved them all.....

      I hope they turned out okay. What happened is called post pet store stress syndrome. They get very stressed for a while until they warm up to you. Sometimes they die in this process though.

    It's sooo cool that there is a pet/animal Community on TH-cam. The only thing is that it's so small. But the only thing is that the animal channels don't get a lot of love 💕.

      I've noticed this with every animal I owned as a kid(bird, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbit, etc) everything I did bordered on abuse
      All that matters is that you don't repeat your mistakes
      I had a one gallon tank full of goldfish and plecos (goldfish need 20+ gallons, plecos need 80+)
      Now I make sure to rescue any that are being rehomed or ones that are sick at a store (my betta had finrot and was underweight when I got him)

      PastelPancakes You can get a Zoo meds 10 gallon starter tank kit , That is how I started out with my two hermit crabs and I have four hermit crabs now and they are going to be all to gather soon in a 25 gallon long tank. Always remember when you get hermit crabs you have to buy them in pairs.

    When should I change the tank cleaning and how I no it smells

    • @airsoftbeginnings2676
      @airsoftbeginnings2676 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a sniff in the tank or check for mold and even if you dont see mold and it doesn't smell bad you should at least change the substrate each once per month on average

    • @airsoftbeginnings2676
      @airsoftbeginnings2676 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would also say to use a substrate mix of play sand which you can get at a local Lowe's for 4.20 and get something called compressed coconut fiber yo uh can get it at a local petsmart or petco your choice

    How often do you clean a tank? I know it depends on how many crabs you have and other variables, but if you were to guess?

    do you just wipe down the cage with water?

    I have 3 hermit crabs as well. Some of my hermit crabs stay buried for either a month or a few weeks. Does this mean they are molting?

    My hermit crab came with the painted shell from Petco and I put many natural turbo shells as you recommended, but he isn't moving to the non-painted one. Is there any way I can encourage him to move? I really hate seeing him in the painted shell.

      They tend to take their time when it comes to moving shells. Make sure you have the right shell for your hermit crab. Check out hermitcrabassociation.com for detailed info on this.

    hello!! i recently got hermit crabs, and while i was on edge about getting them from petsmart, i would like to report they seem very happy and healthy in their new home. humidity and temp is great currently, but i do have a few concerns/questions.
    1. i live in canada, and it gets quite cold here in the winter. it is starting to get cold again. sometimes their heat either is just under the minimum, or just barely gets by. any suggestions? i use a hood light, but im worried a heating mat will burn them if they get too close..
    2. i recently got a second hand "10" gallon aquarium. i cleaned it one afternoon, and after further inspection and measuring, i found out it was a 20 gallon show. i have two hermies. do i have room for another?? i would LOVE another one. they are my pride and joy lol.
    3. humidity high! which kind of moss is safe to use for one?
    4. i live by the ocean. i went walking the other day and found an empty hermit crab shell, straight from the sea! if i boil and santitize it properly, should it be safe to use?
    5. i have very picky crabs. i can never please them with the right foods. they won't take their calcium supplement, i even mixed it with peanut butter. (which they LOVE) and they still wouldn't take it. they are like children that won't take their medicine! i don't know how to give it to them.
    6. shells. i can't find big enough shells for them. we don't have petco, and petsmart has large shells but alas, they are painted. is there a specific place you get yours?
    7. they are still scared of everyone, will they just learn to be comfortable with me over time? or do i have to do something, like hold them once a day or something. it breaks my heart when they hide from me when I feed them. i see princess did not hide in her shell when you picked her up?
    anyways, i hate to bother you with so many questions, but i feel like i need to more to keep them in comfort. love your videos, and thanks for the help if you can!!! ❤️❤️

      Jesslyn Carol ... Yes if you boil a shell it should kill the germs, I would use a heat pad on the back of the tank and it will not burn them, a hood light is good too use as well, 3 hermit crabs should be perfect in a 20 long :)

      Also, they are timid by nature that's just how they are, except princess she is very used to me :) I get all my shells from hobby stores and Florida gift shops are best! Xoxo

    Did I see you mist the tank after you cleaned it? I wasn't sure so thought I would ask. I have a humidifier that I put on when the humidity level gets low. Is it okay to do that instead of misting the tank? What do you recommend?

    • @pangoleen
      @pangoleen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Misting the tank is actually bad for hermit crabs as the water will will collect at the bottom and risk flooding the tank and potentially killing any underground hermit crabs. A humidifier is great as long as the humidity is close to 80%!

    Sorry for the long comment lol...... What type of cleaner can I use to clean the tank that is safe? Also when boiling things for the crabs tank does the boiling water have to be dechlorinated as well or can regular tap water be used?? I have been using dechlorinated water but I was wondering that since the water is being boiled maybe regular tap water would be fine..? I am a new crab owner and have had our hermit crabs for about 4 months... we began with 7 (2 large ones and 5 small ones) but unfortunately 1 large crab and 1 very small crab passed away a month ago.. my mother bought them as a surprise for my 2 children which wasn't a great idea because of course I'm the one taking care of them.. she bought them from Petsmart completely unaware about the sad and horrible hermit crab trade... she spent almost $500 they gave her absolutely wrong information on how to care and provide for them.. One tank was a 10 gallon that had 4 very small hermit crabs .. The 2nd tank was a VERY VERY small octagon shaped tank possibly 3-5 gallons maybe even less and in that tiny tank there was 1 very small hermit crab and TWO BIG hermit crabs a little bit bigger than the size of a golf ball.. They were literally living on top of each other as well as more than half of the stuff she bought for them was not good for the crabs so I have been on a Non-Stop mission for these past few months to gather and teach myself as much as I can and also investing the money and time into them because even though personally I was never interested in them at the end of the day they are still a living creature and actually since havinf them I have become obsessed with learning about them, taking care of them and actually watching them interact inside the tank

    Thank you for the video. My daughter wanted to get hermit crabs as a responsibility for my grandkids. Well, I ended up being the caretaker. We have 2 hermit crabs and a 10 gallon tank. How often do I need to change and clean their environment? The pet store said every week. Online says spot clean, as needed, about every month. What am I spot cleaning? All this is confusing.
