      not only laughs but also a portrait of British society and values. Even if disagreables for todays standards. Now every body wear jeans like the boss, BUT the boss is still the boss even if he wears cat puke colored tshirt and looks like the not so bright son of woody allen.

    It's strange to see Captain Peacock and Mr Lucas being nice to each other. Great actors. Frank Thorton and Trvor Bannister were on Last of the Summer wine together also. (Another fantastic British comedy).

    Are You Being Served worked fantastically because of such a great cast that gelled together so well. You just can't see anyone else in those roles, the original actors played them with such aplomb.

    Back in 93, Trevor sent me a note and photo thinking I was a fan (I am and was) but I had written him with a few questions....how cute..I wish he was still with us. As does his lady Pam. And this week, Nicholas Smith just died. How sad so many of them are gone.

    I lived in Dallas Texas (U.S.A.) and was watching the local public television station during their fund raising drive and Trevor Bannister was a guest on the program and true to form soon as they camera appeared on him the first time he said "Don't adjust your sets, it's been 20+ years now" referring to the time since 'Are you Being Served' went off the air. He was still a comedian and I still laughed seeing him. What a cast that was on the show. Thanks for all the belly laughs cast!!!

    I have been watching AYBS in America for about 14yrs now and record it on dvr, they never get old no matter how many times I watch them and just as funny as the first time I saw them. God bless them all for making us laugh all these yrs. As an American and seeing this show for the first time back in 2002 I can truly say comedy and genius is far reaching in the world. Thank you AYBS!

    My son bought the entire series on d.v.d. for me last Christmas. I always loved the show and after a while public television stopped running it in the area where I live. I believe Nicholas Smith is the only surviving cast member. Being from the U.S. (and particularly the southeastern U.S.) most people around here have never heard of the show much less watched any of it. In an interview on one of the d.v.d.'s Frank Thornton discussed that many in the U.K. thought that U.S. viewers might not "get" British humor. Good comedy transcends all cultural boundaries. So many great people. I never get tired of watching the show.

    • @DTittle

      bagshitass Damn. There's nobody left from the original cast now. At least we have the d.v.d.'s and the memories. While my wife and I loved all of them the way that Trevor Bannister and John Inman played off each other was classic comedy. R.I.P. one and all.

    Believe it or not, I hadn't heard of this show until...last year. It's been on PBS, and I happened to run across it. At first, I didn't care for it, then it grew on me. Now, I love watching it. The cast was amazing! I especially like Mollie and John. Are you free? Yes..I'm free!

      cindybin2001 I first discovered AYBS in the late 80's when the re-runs were showing on my local PBS station. I had no idea the show had been off the air since 1985. I've since acquired all 69 episodes on this huge 14-DVD box set, and I still watch them from time to time. It brings back a lot of fond memories for me. It was also through AYBS that I found out about other classic BBC comedies, namely Last Of The Summer Wine. A shame that Nicholas Smith is the last surviving cast member from AYBS. To John, Trevor, Frank, Mollie, Wendy, and all the other ancillary actors who have since passed on, God bless you all, rest in peace, and thanks for still keeping me laughing even after all these years.

      That's how I found it, or rather it found me, in the mid-'80s. I'd be watching PBS on a weeknight, somewhere between 7 PM and 9 PM and that insistent cash register sound of the opening theme caught my attention. Then one time I _didn't_ change the channel and I was drawn-in. It's at _least_ thirty-six years since becoming a fan of Are You Being Served?

    What made this show so wonderful, was the cast of actors who played in "Are You Being Served?" They meshed so well and the only other show on tv that ever came close to such magic was "Golden Girls"--the magic was there too. Those two shows have always brought me such comfort. Why? I don't know, they just did. I miss Mollie, Frank, Trevor, and John Inman.

    • @leomdk939
      @leomdk939 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +WeeeWriter It's special because the star of the show was the ensemble -- same can be said about The Golden Girls (which I also love). A great ensemble will outperform any single performer, no matter how excellent the single performer may be. A great ensemble makes you feel like a group of your friends have come to visit when you turn on the television. No single star can do that.
      Sadly, it's the same reason why the last couple of seasons were pretty poor and lonely feeling compared to the first seven ... they lost Young Mr. Grace, Mr. Grainger and Mr. Lucas. Without those important pieces, it wasn't nearly the same show. Old Mr. Grace wasn't likeable. Mr. Spooner was just a two-dimensional dimwit and the Grainger replacements were of varying quality, but none half as good as Arthur Brough.

    I first saw this show during the reruns on Channel 7 in Australia, in the mid-2000s when I was really too young to be watching it (Not that I would have understood the jokes and innuendos anyway!) Great to see that many of the episodes are available on TH-cam, and the fanbase is still going strong today. The cast members may no longer be with us, but they will live on in spirit. Every time I go to buy new clothes, if they're the wrong size, I tell myself it'll 'ride up with wear'!

    A few years ago the BBC tried to reinvent some popular sitcoms with a completely different cast of actors. "Are You Being Served" and "Porridge" were amongst them. They wanted to test the water as to which sitcom to bring back for a six episode run. Sadly they did not pick "Are you being served" which I had thought did justice to the 1970s series, instead they bought back "Porridge" with Fletcher's much younger relative in the title role. Personally I didn't think it worked. The original F lecture, Ronnie Barker, was such a very strong character that nobody could really match up to his ability. With "Are you being served", rather than having one strong character, as in "Porridge", there were five or 6 strong characters, I guess the best one IMO was Mr Humphries as played by John Inman, but they were all very good in their own way. I wish the BBC would have a re-think about bringing it back, as the reinvented episode was head and shoulders better than the new "Porridge". A wasted opportunity IMO.

      He was at first but John Inman soon became the centre of the show and got top billing along with Mollie Sugden. But Trevor was great - so fluent with his delivery and his put downs of Mrs Slocombe are hilarious!
