Winter Bushcraft - First Fire at Camp - Firepit & Heat Reflector | Entry 6 - Building Camp Deadhorse

  • In this video, I return to camp and build the shelter's fire-pit and heat reflector, and test it by finally lighting the first fire at camp in over a year of building. After making my way to camp through knee deep snow, I got to work shovelling out the front of the shelter. I cleared an area for the fire-pit, found and dug up the rock pile I collected before winter, and threw together a quick fire ring with an open front. After, I used some of the logs from my wood storage and cut them into long stakes, and pounded them in with my axe (after digging out over a foot of ice off camera). I then used the bucksaw to cut logs to length and stacked them in-between the stakes, tying it all together with paracord making sure to add in the drying string which was suggested many times in past videos. A few days later, I returned to camp right as a cold snap came through the area bringing near -50°C temperatures over the next four days. As the temperature progressively dropped, I got to work splitting kindling from some of the shelter's scrap wood, and made a shaving pile with my knife. I lit the fire with my ferro-rod, and after getting it to a reasonable size, I was quite impressed with how warm the shelter was even with the cold wind and quickly dropping temps. I spent the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying the finished camp, and coming up with more ideas for it in the future. Next up will be some camping.
    Thanks for watching,
    Nicholas

Hey Nicholas , Merry Christmas to you 2 !!!
The place is looking good 😊👍🏽. Here's some thot food 4 ya..... How about xtendg the fire wall around 2 the shelter with a SMALL pass through on 1 side & a larger 1 on the other 4 bringing in packs, dog, gear , wood etc
This helps trap heat & very important 2 block wind into shelter. Keep nosey critters out at nite... Especially when fire is present . Aids in metal prep & ash's out of foods or water boiling in open pots. Can also be used attach tarp 2 from shelter roof line in heavy rain or snow so as to protect fire & cook/prep area.
Just a little something 2 think about 🤠
    ATB amigo 👍🏽👍🏽

Great video, I was wondering what you were building, at first I thought you were going to have a cook out, but even better, you made a dryer, and you didn't need electricity! did the gloves dry good? you could dry other things that get wet, the heat reflector was a fantastic idea. I'm learning a lot from your videos, keep up the good work !!

Well as I sit here in TN USA current temp is 10 degrees which is far below our normal temp , nothing like your temps but very cold for us. I would like to ,arm chair , some questions and suggestions . Next time consider making your fire reflector/wind break as long as the opening in your shelter , why did you build your fire on bear ground rather than a log base. Please explain covering your fire pit with snow before you left , looks like 2 feet of snow all around . I understand leaving a cold fire pit before leaving a camp site , but with 2 feet of snow ?That U- shaped fire pit was a great idea. Now with all that said your vids are top notch , and I really enjoy watching them . This post is not meant to be confrontational , but conversational . The way you check you rifle frequently is impressive. Stay safe and Merry Christmas .

Hello, glad to see another comment from you! It's been awhile. Great idea on the fire reflector length. The main reason I made it short is so it doesn't block too many angles for filming inside the shelter. I had a long one on an older camp that was hard to work around. The one I built reflects some heat but does nothing for the wind, but I figured it was worth it. I built my fire on the ground because I had shovelled the snow out and wasn't too worried about it melting into the ice that was left. I have been very paranoid about not putting my fires out well enough after some close calls (long story), the snow was to make sure it would melt into it and put it out completely after I left. I definitely went overkill with it, but better safe than sorry 😆 Thanks for the questions and suggestions. They help make my videos better, so I appreciate it! Merry Christmas!

The rifle is small and light enough to carry easily, and is about as light as my camera and tripod which I carry in my other hand when it isn't recording. It balances out so, it doesn't really bother me carrying it around. I am thinking of putting a sling on it though. Thanks for the question!

I live just north of the unofficially official coldest place in Canada. The coldest temperature recorded was -63°C in the Yukon, but it has been well into -70°C here according to locals and old books. I guess it was just never recorded officially 😆
