I think Germans are way harsher in judging people's attempts to speak another language. Native speakers probably appreciate the effort of someone learning a second language.

Daniel Brühl is an absolute exception, he is simply a linguistic genius. In addition to German, he also speaks Spanish, English, French, Catalan and Italian, some of them fluently. For the role of Niki Lauda in "Rush" he adopted the Austrian inflection so perfectly that even Niki Lauda himself applauded.

You can learn grammar and vocabulary at school, but pronounciation is best learned in contact with people who speak english as a first language, wich was hard to do in the GDR.

@@lilg2300Not in general as it was just a third language option from 7th to 10th grade & not always possible.. My mother for example learned as 3rd language french & ironically speaks far better english then my father who had english, but even my grandpa who was born 29 remembered more words then my father. So the english level in the GDR was more or less as good & common as french is today in Germany.

To me, as a German, Matthias Schweighöfer and Daniel Brühl sound like „typical younger germans, who had to learn English for 6-8 years“. I sound a lot like that as well. German English teachers try to teach RP and no „regional accents“. Combine that with international media and you get a very interesting accent for Germans, who like the English language.
And Germans older the fifty often forgot most of the English they learned in school (if they grew up in western Germany, unlike Angela Merkel, who learned Russian instead of English).

Daniel Brühl has also starred in a number of American/English films by now. He also grew up, if I’m not mistaken, in Spain, which means he is fluent in three languages. The more you learn different languages, the easier it gets and the more you are able to embrace a natural/native accent, I think.

For me as a German who had 12 years of english class in school, I find it more pleasant if someone actually is well spoken and has a good choice of words and grammar than talking without an accent.
With Günther Oettinger you probably have one of the most stereotypical german accents but he is indeed very fluent and his sentences and words are more complex than for example Thomas Müllers english.
Also you see a very strong difference in age. The older the speakers are, the more insecure and "german sounding" they normally are.

    • @n_other_1604
      @n_other_1604 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

It sounded a lot like a prepared comment after negotiations & not at all spontanous in contrast to Thomas Müller. Also Öttinger refused to speak english spontaneously before. However in general I agree that vocab & grammar are more important, also it's sometimes sad that strong accents are often confused with bad language skills.

You should definitely check out everything about Stefan Raab. He is/was (retired in 2015) one of the biggest TV-Entertainers of Germany and he had a late night talk show called "Tv Total". He had very famous national and international celebrities on his show. In my opinion his interviews with some famous musicians were fun to watch, because he often had a little jam session with them and made them sing or talk in German. The most famous interview would probably the one with Eminem.
Stefan Raab himself is a talented musician and even participated in the Eurovision Song Contest multiple times as an act, a producer/songwriter and mentor for Lena (won the ESC in 2010), who Stefan Raab has discovered on a singing competition show of his and who is now one of Germanys biggest pop music artists.

Contrary to a very high percentage of Germans in West Germany learning English at school for at least five years he had only three years of English. His first foreign language was Latin which he did for nine years, his second was French which he did for seven years. According to a newspaper article from the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" he said that before becoming EU commissioner he never really needed to talk English. Im german myself and while its probably easy to hear where im from, speaking eloquently is much more important than anything else. Or at least trying to. German might sound like a very "tacky" and strict language, but its actually quite flowery and beautiful. If you dare to delve into it, that is. @mert, i like how you differentiated between people having horrible german accents when trying to speak english, vs people who speak english very well, but allow their german to color their english because they are in fact german and are comfortable with being german. I studied english at university and was trained to completely eliminate any trace of german accent. That was definitely a goal for a while. I then moved to the US and i found that i needed to allow my german heritage to come back in a little just to maintain my real personality. Now it is just a clue for people who have traveled that i am in fact of german descent. a conversation starter if you will. 30 years on i have to say that my english has overtaken my german just a little. getting rusty in my mother tongue.

I have to admit, even after living in the UK for ever a decade, people still told me they were able to tell I was foreign (though not necessarily German). On the other hand, I have heard Germans (in the UK) speak English so well that even I couldn't tell they were German. Maybe I was too old when I moved to the UK (I was 46) to really pick up the style, pronounciation, expressions etc. But I did get along extremely well, I never had any problems communicating with my British peers nor did they have a problem understanding me. And I did get the occasional compliment for how well I spoke English.
Since returning to Germany in 2018, my English skills have decreased massively, at least in my opinion. I still try to watch all movies etc. in English to at least try and keep up, but it's difficult. Everything on German TV is dubbed, sadly.
While in the UK I met a guy from the Czech Republic and he spoke the dirtiest Blackpoole accent I have ever heard. And he had the best Indian impresssion I have ever heard (except for Russell Peters) - a real language genius.

General speaking, in my opinion many Germans struggle with the pronunciation of the "th" (it often sounds either like an s or like d) and also some words are pronounced German (e.g. good - gut (German, means the same). What I also experienced is, that often older Germans struggle more, because children in Germany learn English at school very early (my English lessons at school started in third grade elementary school) maybe this could be the reason but even I, although I had English lessons for about 9-10 years at school, sound like that sometimes if I’m speaking it while being very angry/ excited😂

the "stereotypical" accent that the talkshow host used when talking to Diane Krüger was a very Movie accent. I don't think I've ever heard anybody talk like that in real life, unless it was to fake an accent. I don't think I can tell regions apart by their accent in English. It's mostly based on age, when they started learning English and how much people speak English.
And I don't know what it is with our politicians. They always have a stronger accent than most celebrities. It'S probably because all the celebrities (esp. actors and musicians, but also people like Kahn (though I was surprised about his English too)) interviewed here have international fame. And you only really manage that if you have some control over the English language^^. So, there are probably many celebrities who just never speak English, so you wouldn't know. For the politicians, the environment also plays a role. Most of these were quite formal settings reading a pre-written speech. It says very little about how bad or well they speak, when they don't read along. Oettinger for example, at times, falls apart completely if asked to do an interview in English. Scholz can do a fluent interview in English (and as a politician I'd assume that's pretty hard, cause you have to keep a formal polite and diplomatic tone throughout) but his accents gets a bit stronger than it would've been here. etc.

Most germans, born after WW2 in western germany, speak or at least understand english, because it's teached in schools as a second language you have to learn. In eastern germany it was a little different, guess what? Right! They learnd russian as second language. After the reunion english was the No1 second language you have to learn in reunited germany. So as a native german speaker it's sometimes funny to hear some germans speaking english, because you can hear their german regional accent even as they speak english. Fo rexample Thomas Müller, you can hear his bavarian accent even in english. Or Angela Merkel, her eastern german tongue is for me clear hearable as Olaf Scholz hanseatic hamburger kind of speaking.
For me Günter Oettinger (yes you saw him before in the heute show) is the best example of how you sholdn't pronounce english as a german, and I guess that's the reason why he is often prompt to speak english during heute show interviews...
Diane Krüger, Mathias Schweighöfer and Daniel Brühl are well addiucated actors and seen in many internatinal productions ( Troy, captain america civil war, army of the dead...) that's why their english is so well, with restrictions for Mathias Schweighöfer... ;-)

He behaved like a rabid chimp on the pitch, shouting, kicking almost chewing peopls face off, but as an expert for german TV and as president(?) of Bayern München he behaved very statemen like, was calm, rational, well spoken - and that translates surprisingly well to his speaking in english
