    The "cleaning woman" Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer was Merkel's successor as leader of the CDU. She had been Minister-President (aka Prime Minister) of the very small federal state of Saarland before, and she was thought to be the next chancellor candidate of the CDU to succeed Merkel, but she already resigned after only one year as the head of the party.
    The "cleaning woman" was her custome for a political carnival show, which became infamous because she made jokes about transgender toilets and people wanting to have another gender on stage in that custome.

      For the UK people in this chat, we should explain the desaster:
      - The sailing ship Gorch Fock was originally built in 1958 for the costs of 8.5 Million D-Mark (roughly 4.3 million Euro, not considering inflation);
      - In 2015, it was decided to work it over for an estimated total of 10 million Euro; given the history of the ship and the loss in purchasing power a reasonable price;
      - In 2017 the estimated costs skyrocketed to 75 million Euro;
      - A few months later, in March 2018, the estimated costs were already at 135 million euro;
      - the wharf wich had taken the contract went bankrupt over this renovation;
      - In September 2021 the restauration was completed and the ship was handed over again to the Bundesmarine for the costs of 135 million Euro.

    It's really a pity that the puns they made in this episode (where they translated German sayings into English) are hard to understand by foreigners - you guys would love it 😂
    And just in case some viewers need to hear it: We like British people very much, you are welcome here and we hope that we are still welcome in your country ☺️ We just brag about the Brexit itself, because it's honestly very chaotic and - in my opinion - a little bit unneccessary, so we want it to be over (but it's taking so long, thanks to British and EU politics). Germans express feelings like these by a kind of "humoristic/satiric shittalking" against everybody who is involved, but in reality we don't mean it that way 🤗 (Well, some of the Germans sadly do, and they say that very loudly, which makes it look like many people don't like you, but in Germany we say "Nicht geschimpft ist genug gelobt" which means "Not being criticized is enough appraisal" - so, since the vast majority of Germans don't criticize you, they like you very much 😂)

    The whole "German Aircraft Carrier"-thing just came at the perfect moment. The German Navy owns an old traditional sailing ship, the Gorch Fock, and it had to get maintainance - what became a total mess... in the end it took them 6 years, cost millions of tax money and was just another embaressment for the german Army and Ministry of Defense.
    And while this was happening, the Secretary of Defence talked about the great idea to build a CV meanwhile they cant repair a 100y old sailing ship.
    (and yes I know, the real issue was the bureaucracy bs and some corruption, not the missing skills or knowledge - but still, pure Comedy)

      I'd assume you've never seen work on wooden hulls or masts in a shipyard, because it's not like replacing a wooden board in your table. It might also have played a role, that A LOT of shipyard time frames in the navy were pushed into the unknown future for decades, because too little money was allocated. Yet the ships and boats were expected to deliver very high service hours.
      It doesn't take a genius to realize that this might be bad. It should also have been pointed out in ARD media, because they themselves are not exactly suffering from too little money. Now, why would you think there was this oversight in reporting for decades?

Your way via german comedians or political entertainment by comedians may be a clever move because they do also explain us germans sometimes, what we may not see, deny or refuse to see in general or in particular contexts. The view from an external position often depicts flaws you'll never see when inside the mass. The comedian from his position is also extern somehow.
    You have asked for different and more performers to learn more about german minds:
    If you want to get deeper in this categories of german humour, reflexions and "education via comedy", you should not miss the famous Vicco von Bülow aka "Loriot" and his views around. An oldschool comedian without the very comedyish attempt, more an academic attempt in different styles: dialogues, role plays/scenes, monologues and cartoons. His program has been famous and much-loved from the late 1970ies until 1990ies. Clearly and slowly spoken and always presented with a sympathic touch of diabolic smile in his face.

    I think some of the jokes were so harsh because they were fueled by bitterness. Deep down even when Germans and other Europeans said they were just fed up with brexit taking so long and Britain should just get it over with everyone (at least the ones who support the EU) still wished they'd somehow change their minds about the whole thing. It was quite painful to watch a powerful trading partner and "cultural ally" leave, especially during times in which only a unified Europe can hope to still be seen as a global player. There have been multiple forces, many of which supported by foreign powers, who only want to cause friction among Europes nations to ultimately "divide and conquer" and it was worrying to see their tactics work.

What would a single person in the EU would've gained, if the British stayed in? We just felt sorry for the nearly 50% that would've wanted to stay. Everyone in the EU knew, that Britain didn't pull they weight in the EU. They mainly took. That's not how it works. That's why the owned a huge amount of money to the EU.

    6:43 You had "Screenwipe"/"Newswipe" with Charlie Brooker, which is on par, sometimes even better than German Kabarett. When I asked a ZDF Kabarett writer whether they knew Charlie Brooker, the answer was: "Of course!"

    No, we dont think Brits look like the guy at the beginning, its just a parody. Germans dont run around with Picklehaube helmets either, but are often depicted like that in sensationalist British newspapers. A stereotypical Brit would be someone with either pale skin oder a bright red sunburn ;). Actually if i had to picture typical Brits, i think of Rowan Atkinson and John Cleese, i guess they formed my expectations.

    At the beginning, when he called you "indecisive brits" he said "Hänge-Briten", which is an innuendo to "Hänge-Titten", meaning "sagging tits". That's why that image of a brit they used, is one of an overweight man with said sagging bits.
    (I used hyphens in the german words to show the parts of the composite nouns.)

    As a German, I'm not sure German comedians are more direct than British comedians. Like, we've got NOBODY on the level of Jimmy Carr :D

      One of the strengths of British "stand-up" comedians like Jimmy Carr is their repartee. They encourage audience members to heckle and come back with fast responses (etwa: eine Schlagfertigkeitsprüfung vor gesammelter Mannschaft).

    There's always your home boy John Oliver. His show _Last Week Tonight_ has basically the same format and the same kind of humour. Since he wasn't well received in the Home Islands, he went to America, where he found the same kind of mainstream media making people dumb, but also found an audience appreciating his satire on the establishment and other international issues.

    I am a native german from germany, i have seen all the Heute-Show Brexit things years ago.
    Iat this point at English for Brexiteers i have to apologize for the language niveau of the show.
    The main viewer of ZDF is above 50. And often only learned english in school, never used it afterwards and forgot 90% of it.
    So the creators use a very simple and basic english for those. The germans, who grew up in the 80s and 90s learned english with games and other media.
