This is EXACTLY what happened to me. I’ll be 53 this month, and am totally STUCK at a low level HR job, because I both started my career late, I was in my 30’s, and I stayed at one employer for almost ten years. And yes- then they threw me out! And I’ve gone backwards ever since. Im still in the same type of position, in the same industry- making less than I did at the job I stayed at for ten years. I stayed so long because I was very happy with my salary. Huge mistake. Now, I don’t believe I’m qualified for anything. We didn’t have TH-cam or anything to help guide us, and I had no parents- I just winged it. I have a useless college degree, also, that has nothing to do with anything relevant. So kids- take this knowledge and apply it, and focus on your careers. You don’t want to end up like me!
I’m in a similar situation as you but at least having a job even at a low level is better than not having one. That being said my corporate office is becoming super toxic, but this is a symptom of larger problems within corporate culture as a whole.

Then, when I was eleven, my mother and her new family moved out of the country and she left me with her parents, my grandparents. My grandmother was emotionally abusive, and unable to even hold a normal conversation. My grandfather always had affairs, so the two of them didn’t speak, and he went out to the bar literally every, single night. My father was an alcoholic, and didn’t want anything to do with me, he said, because I reminded him of my mother. I had absolutely zero guidance, rules, structure, or routine. Zero parenting. I ran wild back in the 80’s- I’m surprised I’m not dead! 😳 When I finally decided to go to college, I chose what sounded interesting. So I have a Bachelor’s of Art in Psychology. Can’t get any more useless of a degree than that! The world now, though, is a totally different place. And I feel that the world right now is at the beginning of a major change, as big of a change as The Industrial Revolution was, but now it’s all about AI.
@@maryshellsmith6627 If you have a psychology degree, you could learn marketing and combine them. Or you could upskill and do counselling. Do you have any hobbies that you could monetize?
@@Tecalitlan1943 I totally agree that some babies are born into success just because of the parents they were born to, and the family they come from. They can have it if they want it. My story is that my father was an abusive alcoholic, my mother divorced him when I was 3. We moved in with her parents. Mom got remarried when I was 4 to an Egyptian man. They moved in together and had two kids. I lived with them, but I used to go stay with my grandparents often. I just didn’t feel part of that family. Then, when I was 11, they decided they were all moving to Egypt, and they left me with my grandparents. My grandmother was nasty to me, she was just a miserable person. My grandfather went out to the bar literally every, single night. I used to stay in my room alone whenever I was home. My mother was living out of the country from the time I was 11-18 years old, then they moved back. My father never bothered with me. I found out many years later that it was because I reminded him of my mother. I see my mom still, but to this day I am a total outsider in that family. My mom divorced the Egyptian, but then they were closer than ever, even though they lived apart. Now he’s dying from cancer, and my half sister and brother will inherit his 700K house, I get zero, of course. My mom’s new house is only worth about 220k, and which will be split three ways. My sister and brother are both very wealthy, and don’t even need money. I’m poor, and need it. I have nothing. I ran wild as a teen, had no rules, no structure or routine. No rules means I never had any consequences. I was an extremely angry teenager, and all the way through my 20’s. I would stay out for days at a time when I was a teen. No one cared. I only went to college because I wanted to make more money, and I truly believed that going to college would guarantee that. I got my GED, and then went to college. I majored in psychology, only because it sounded the most interesting to me. No other reason. That’s what I meant by “I had no parents and no direction”. I literally raised myself.
Time is your most precious resource. The days may slog by but the years fly by.

Looking back after 32 years of my career gone so far, I feel MY time hasn’t been valued. I firmly believe in just looking after yourself. Make as much money as you can, so you can enjoy your life with less pressure and spend more time with your family and friends.
Careers change. Jobs change. Government policies can screw you over by outsourcing your career to the 3rd world. Just don’t trust anyone, make as much money as possible and enjoy your hobbies, family, etc after work hours.
Don’t work long hours for millionaires who don’t respect you. You’ll be happier long term.
Save money. Invest. Be prepared when employers remove you. That way, you aren’t so stressed.
I lost my leadership position because of CV-19 and company restructuring so I decided to take a job that will pay the bills but not dedicate my time, and be stressed out running a department when humans are seen as disposable and contributions to team/company don't matter, only bottom line does.
I advise people... put away 20% for the future and keep 6-12 months of FU money saved up. Get your house paid off then start planning early retirement around mid 50’s.
@@wb5mgr good strategy, but be more aggressive. Put away 30% minimum. That’s what I’ve done. Sometimes I put away 50%. By your late 40s, or early 50s, hit your retirement savings hard. Yes, being debt free helps.
When purchasing for major purchases, shop around. $1,000 saved here, $5,000 saved there, it’s like a pay rise. Don’t go nuts on expensive clothes or jewelry too.
agree jobs can be satisfying but might change at the drop of a hat and you find yourself some years later doing something really different than what you had originally been doing (meaning in terms of company restructuring itself)

Absolutely correct!
Do not expect an employer to value you. You need to put a value on yourself and your own time.
Companies will pay you as little as they can.
Be prepared to move, change, upgrade, retool and otherwise manage your career in order to get the value YOU want for your invested time.
repeatedly moving is very very expensive and disruptive to your family and children. moving is something that should be undertaken with care . what if you move and then 6 months 1 year later you get laid off or fired? best to get some kind of parachute if you are asked for this
Bro - This video needs to be mandatory watching by ALL High School Seniors and College Students at the beginning and end of each semester. It also needs to be rewatched by them before they graduate and every employee needs to watch it annually when they get their performance review (whether it was a good or bad review). Far to much time wasted on unfulfilling jobs and employers not giving a shit about us. It is so hard to transfer functions even within the same company. Companies just want you to keep making their widgets and then they cut you when they find a cheaper widget maker or you get complacent!
Your last sentence probably answers why your first sentence is not a reality. I completely agree, but this kind of enlightenment among young people might give them a chance out of the rat-race, and to an extent, companies need those complacent lifers to function long term.

Absolutely true! Rebelling against my parents' pressure to go to law school was the best decision I ever made. I've spent 25 years doing work I love in tech marketing. Aggressively learning about your industry and building new skills in your craft every week of every year of every decade is a total joy when you're doing work you love.
Now in my 50s, can confirm this is good advice.
I am 53 year old female. The jobs that I have had over my years are: Farm Hand, Factory Worker, Radio Station Producer, Radio Station Announcer, Records Officer, Administration Assistant, Project Assistant, Financial Data Entry. CAD tutor, Civil Drafter, 3D modeler.
I have two Degrees - A Visual Arts Degree in Fine Arts and a Civil Engineering Degree.
What can I say? "Go Eat Cheese!"

I was laid off a couple of weeks ago. I'm listening to interview questions, audiobooks, and of course your video. This is hitting a good nerve about life.
That's a great attitude. Make sure you use your free time now to keep in the zone. Take the courses you never had time to take, practice interviews, learn and keep your mind as sharp as possible. Then when the chances come, you'll be ready. Good luck!

This is very true. I was stuck in a comfortable place... a Swiss investment bank with a swimming pool and a jacuzzi hating my actual role hoping that things will somehow magically improve and in the end, it cost me a career.... in fact moving to the UK cost me a career because I know from day one that this country did not work for me but I listened to my family which I should nor have. Go for your passion boys and girls, no one is in a position to help you make important choices in life, in the end of the day they will all be gone and you will be left facing the consequence of your choices! When in your 50s, you realize that sand is passing thru the hour glass faster. Especially when your last parent passes in the 70s. After all, 30 years have passed and perhaps less than 20 remain.

Time is our most valuable asset. People think it's money, but money is everywhere. There are always opportunities to make money. But the only thing we can't ever get back is time.
I love this message. It's why I decided to go to school for acting and as hard as it was to graduate into the pandemic, I'll be getting my master's in writing for stage and broadcast in London this fall and am looking forward to doing what I love again. It's been a tough year and a half and this was wonderful to hear! Thank you for being such a positive resource!

Wow this hit profoundly. In some ways I've been the victim of my own success, I'm well paid but completely apathetic about my job. I started off in a STEM lab based field fairly low paid but very engaged and excited about it, and then eventually "sold out" into the whole "software engineering" thing and somehow ended up in finance some years later. I'm quietly hoping this latest financial crisis will destroy the banks and I get fired :) Would like to find something IT based back in biotech but there are so few of those jobs and pay half as much. Maybe I should just do it anyway to save my soul lol!
I just happened across this video on the day I'm debating between 2 job offers. Making a decision between them is so difficult, but what you said is helping me. One offer is pretty much what I am doing now, the other is more a step further with bigger unknowns but the kind of opportunity that could lead to more entrepreneurial opportunities. Being that I'm complacent, bored and unhappy with where my job is now, I think that helps make the decision MUCH easier.

You are totally right! I got laid off in 2020 because I did not manage my time well between learning, apply for grad school and my job! But I am glad I got laid off based on my choices that time since I did valued my time to study more than beyond my job than my daily job tasks which It is helping me to gradully getting for this higher paid and high end of the opportunities in my area :) and that laid off experience made me realize what kind of job/companies I probably not gonna waste my time to apply in the future in my area as lessons from failed experiment and exploration purposes while I am still relatively young :)

So true that time is our most valuable asset. My father who died at the age of 91 some 7 years ago now was raised in England Back then you exited grade school at about 16 years of age. They evaluated your natural talents and strengths and then set you on that path for a career. He was an Engineer. This was the same for my mom. She was a natural artist. Oh how I would be amazed as a child at how she would draw these awesome cartoons on a paper by the phone. Back in those days it was a rotary phone on a table by the door. I could never understand how she could do it. I too am a natural artist Artwork I've created cause a wow from people. But, my career is now on the engineering side in Pharma and medical device. I got a B.S. in Microbiology. But, it was my artistic capability that brought me there because it sparked my imagination and creativity I did well on tests because I could see it creatively if that makes sense. But, in high school no one knew or cared about my natural talents. My mom died when I Wass 8 years old and I spent the rest of my formative years in crisis mode. My mom was driven away From art by her father who said she would never be able to make a living off of it She did financial work for a department store. She could have worked with Disney! I am now 27 years in my STEM career only to continually be met by the glass ceiling. 4 years back I evaluated what I should be doing and am stepping in the direction of my own business that units my creativity and gained quality knowledge but the hard part has been the need for a paradigm shift from being an employee to a business owner.

I’m 27 (turning 28 in a few weeks) and have just kinda bounced around since finishing college 5 years ago. Over the past year or two I’ve just slid into this slump where I’m super apathetic about my job, but just kind of staying in purgatory because I have no idea where to go next. I’m well paid, have great benefits and the work is easy, but I can’t even put into words how much I don’t give a s**t about what I do. I couldn’t even tell you what I’ve done at work over the past two weeks tbh.
But when you put it this way, you’re right. The past year went by really quickly and I don’t want to let this year slump become a 10 year slump. Now is probably the best chance I’ll have to do something different...
Unless you really want your work to have meaning, or you get some significant part of your self worth from your job, I would suggest to stay the course. Rack up as much money as you can and stow it away, and be thankful that you don't have to care in order to do your job. I was on the other side of this where every vacation I took was me worrying about how big of a disaster I was going to be coming back to and non-stop stress because it was down to me to figure out how to make everything happen and it's not worth it, no matter the pay. I would gladly take apathy and high compensation, because I have other goals outside of work that give me fulfillment. I would love high paying and fulfilling in a single job, but I haven't found it. So if I had the choice, I would tell the "so much stress because you have to care about everything" position to eff off.
"Well-Paid" is subjective. Very subjective. I'm a Software/Network Engineer and six-figure income "isn't well-paid" out here in California. But, ya, in a Red State, I would be living like a king or a sleezy pimp! lol!

Thank you for highlighting the importance of time, I also believe it is our most priceless asset. However as you correctly mentioned there is the issue of weighing up the stability (income) especially if we have dependents. Sometimes the cost of following our soul is just too high. If you are a single person that is one thing, but when you have to consider the cost of education, healthcare, other stuff children need which are not provided by the cough cough one who collects taxes, it becomes a much more difficult decision.

I have a 2 year degree in design, and 4 year degree in IT. I'm a web developer now but what i'm finding is that jobs are flooded with candidates in front end development. I might be 1 out of 300 applicants. Since my degree is IT, it's vague on what I can do honestly. But I realized that I could still do database development/design. I went to look at jobs for database developers and saw that there were 0 applicants on a job that was there for 3 weeks. I saw others with 2 to 5 applicants. I was thinking wow, i have no competition in these fields and it is what I went to school for. I have decided to start applying! The money is actually better too. And i'm only shifting from web developer to database developer and a lot of those skills are transferable.
Everything in this video is true and is explained short and simple. I have made several of these mistakes listed over the years. The video also motivation for me that corporate life is not the only thing out there. If you are successful making money on your own, then the tips in this video only apply to your clients, not you employer.

Thanks for those kinds of words! Trying to get into the game industry with tons of interviews and no's, but I know it's my end goal. I know it's a lower-paying job but just like you said I would be mad if I didn't try to get in or at least tried! Maybe in the end I will not like it and be disappointed if I am in. But hey, better than having regrets
I want to go back to school to do what I really want to do, but I've been on the edge about getting into student debt. This is helping motivate me to go back. Currently 25 with an associate's in math, wanting to become a mathematician

Absolutely brilliant channel and enjoyed this particular video. It really helped hit home about the time factor being mid 30's and sitting on the fence for some time. Have very unclear vision where to go from here. But like you say the thirties are for working things out. Just need to be quick now. :) I have more to say on this subject in that I find it's sad that potential and passion are often not being met when we often have that innate need but haven't been taught the basics here. If schools had been made to encourage growth as human beings then surely we would have been taught the real fundamentals of how to grow as humans

I come across a lot of people who are complacent and bury their time in jobs they do not like. The problem with is that they can have key position in a company or a government agency and can are obstacles for those climbing up the career ladder. What to do with this kind of people when going forward with our careers?

I used to think it was my job I hated, but it's worse: I hate work itself. Not that I'm lazy, but detest I had to spend the greater part of my life doing what others paid me to do, rather than what I wanted. Guess there's nothing I can do, you need to accept the things you can't change, and change the things you can. Having to earn a living is a reality for most of us, but I have never liked it. I suspect it probably shows in my work and in my attitude.

Exactly the conclusion I came to a couple years ago. I've been studying and getting certified in different technologies and preparing to leave the company I've been with for fifteen years. I feel like it was instilled in me some time in my youth that the goal was to get a single decent job and stay there until you grow old and can no longer work. It's taken me a long time to realize that for most, if not all this is not ideal. From the beginning of my career I should have activly pushing to educate myself and growing my abilities and in doing that, my value.
I'm not doing what I like or paid what I deserve. But it's not like it's easy to find a better job. Connections and luck matters a lot. And there's still bills to pay, there's savings to build. I have no better option for my time as of now. And it's hard to switch jobs cos I get judged for jumping once every 2 years whereas the chicks who jump every year in a less in demand role gets the moves. As much as I understand what you mean, I gotta stick to where I am now as much as I dread it

I like your videos because you are realistic, but not heartless. Thank you. I am stuck between "I don't live to work" and "I have zero satisfaction". Which is why I decided to continue my studies in a field which I love, while working. I am exhausted :)) But happier than before deciding to continue my studies in this field.
This video is really helpful. I just started my current job 4 months ago, the pay is very good but I found the content is not as interesting as I expected. I now know this job will not expedite my career as my last one, and I now feel super unsatisfied as I am a very ambitious person. I had three interviews last week and another one next week, but I was feeling guilty about quitting my job too soon as the everything about my current job is good apart from the boring content. By watching this video, I am very certain about what I will do once I receive a job offer, I just can’t stay in my current job being complacent as I know in a few years time, I won’t get paid as much as I am now by doing what I am doing at the moment. After my first degree I had to found a job to be able to pay the rest of school.
Now that I am fully graduated I clearly say that companies allocated my time and the computation of my brain if not my entire body with manual work.
I am in my late twenties, build a career is essential in my case but I definitely want multiple income stream because I want to make sure don't ever have again to count only on job income.
And I don't want to do extra hours just to stay afloat and thus giving my time away.
I'm only in my early 20's, but I've been working at a grocery store as my only resume job entry. I've been feeling I'm just going nowhere, so I'm working on developing skills to get into a different career path.

Yes ,layoff from 23 yrs job 5 yrs ago ,finding it hard to get on the horse again fulltime also ageism is there (I feel)from employers
It is depending on what you do. In certain industries they prefer lots of experience
I appreciate the advice you give to folks, but the more of your content I watch, the more I reach the conclusion that this country is so profoundly warped that it's truly beyond redemption.
The only time I feel like I wasted time was when I worked for corporations. When I worked for mom and pop, start ups and even running my own company. I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, but I have done everything from landscaping to application development, nursing and project management. Project management has been the most challenging and fun but I hate that every few months I have to look for the next contract unless the company needs me for another project.

Anyone out there who thinks they need to work 30, 40, or heaven forbid 50 years or more, please look into the FIRE movement. Become financially independent and then choose to work if you desire. You are in control of your destiny.
That requires people to make 6 figure incomes or larger than live like you're broke and invest successfully. Most people aren't able to do that
@@HH-le1vi able? Or willing? Victims won’t get anywhere. A 6-figure income is pretty easy to attain. You don’t even need a degree to achieve that early-mid career. You get what you put in and it should feel uncomfortable.
29 job titles....some with the same company...5 careers, 4 states, lay-offs, terminations, a few resignations, 3 401k's (sadly cashed in) 3 Fortune 500 companies...there were some I wanted to expand more but the company wasn't a good place to expand...the pandemic gave me a new standard of what I will accept for work...in my 20's I would be sad when my friends and family would be having fun & I would be at work...in my 30's I had moved away so all I did was work...but the lay-offs kept coming....I did my own thing for about a yr...I made NO money but I learned alot....now I want something different...I hope this latest career expansion I'm doing will launch me into my own business...living in America in this day & age is losing the priceless things about life...I'm not feeling that

Thanks for your amazing channel and advice. I am in a little bit of a limbo. My industry shed about 80% of the workforce this past pandemic. Me, being a program manager, and experienced vet, is having to work twice as much now that most of our staff is gone. I am burning out but I am so afraid to go out there and join the 80% of the workforce. I've had no success interviewing outside of my industry and my job is still the best fit as it pays a fortune as well. Any other job would be 40% cut. Shall I stick it out with my company? or take a sabbatical.

@@selenasimmons6653 I took that sabbatical and feel amazing! seven months off to recharge. Yes, I can afford it. I'm debt free and have savings for an event like this. I have 3 interviews a day and am taking my time in the next move. Feels great to choose a job without being burned out. I'm being flown out to DC today for an interview ;) Everything is aligning up beautifully for me!
I agree if you are not wealthy then you will have to work for a living. I have left a few really high level positions so that I could raise my family. I have been a free agent for the last twenty years and it all worked out. Most of my coworkers who have been company seem to be in a deep rut.

It's hard to even find help for career counseling once you are out of school. We need more private career counselors
High School no longer prepares one for the future. This needs to be taught. When companies come to schools, they blow smoke. Tell you we are all a family blah, blah. Looking back, I wish I was wiser. My company several years ago stopped paying into the pension and new hires no longer have a pension. They only get 409(K). I still have my pension and 401(K). People need to start saving from day one. Save at least 10%. Go higher if you can. Don't be a fool and blow your cash on stupid toys like fancy cars. See many buy Audi's, BMW's etc. Cars are expensive to maintain.
