      Thats what I hate the most about Linkedin. So many buttkissers making cringe post about how much they love their company. Lets also not forget about the virtue signalers, who are all talk about bringing equality and justice in the workplace. And lastly tje narcissists who like to showoff how great their job is and how important "hustling" is to become a big shot.
      Honestly I feel like Linkedin is a circus full of clowns pretending to be nice and cool to attract attention and get likes. Most people that I've met in real life who post these nice things are quite the opposite of what they pretend to be in this social network.

    One major annoyance I have is that people have turned LinkedIn into Instagram and Facebook. Sharing a post that reflects your personal life once in a while isn't a big deal but now it's sort of veering away from being a professional networking platform. The constant brag posts are annoying too lol. "I'm super excited to share that I've achieved 40 certifications and 25 promotions within the last 6 months. I'm also this...and that...and blah blah."

    • @Milesco
      @Milesco ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Milesco I don't know, maybe it was born as that?
      But at present I find it super useful as a tool to stay up to date with what is going on within my field. I would lose so many insights without LinkedIn (and work opportunities might also come as a by-product). Obviously that is dependant on building a network on the platform (people and pages) that fills your feed with useful and interesting content.
      I reckon this might not apply to any field, but for me it works great that way and as of now I really don't feel like I would use LinkedIn primarily as a display cabinet

  • @gordongraham7

    Your second thing is what drives me crazy. I get emails saying "you sound perfect for this role!" and it's an entry level, minimum wage contract job. I have 25 years at the best companies in the world, and you think I'd be interested in THAT??

    • @WomanRoaring
      @WomanRoaring 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      yes that and when you get multiple messages about the same job from different recruiters. When that happens I search for the job and apply myself if I'm interested. Every time I've gotten calls or emails from recruiters about a job and I submit my resume through them I never get called back but when I submit my resume myself I get a call. I realized years ago they don't work for the company and the company hasn't contracted them to find someone for them, they're just trolling job postings and then contacting random people in hopes of "helping" someone get the job through them. Oh and then they're rude and pushy wanting tons of changes to your resume. I especially hate when they want me to change something on my resume that is important to my experience in my field and they know nothing about it and think it shouldn't be there. I don't mind having recruiters for temp jobs when I'm in between jobs I'll sign up for an agency but when I'm looking for something permanent I never go through a recruiter, it just never works out.

      I hate it even more when they wanna schedule a call to “talk” about a position that they do not want to give you a full description for in writing for some reason. I am not gonna waste my precious time, so you can do your sales pitch to offer me an entry level position that pays minimum wage. Plus, most of the times, they instantly ghost me, once I am straight forward and ask them about pay and flexibility to work from home before even scheduling a first call, what for?

      So can having a long work history. Age discrimination is the biggest discriminatory variable out there. No one in the DICE offices ever address this, because they are the ones most guilty of enabling it to exist. Other factors continually are virtue signaled into prominence and visibility.

    • @Lunaryse
      @Lunaryse หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am quite glad we have the photos because if a recruiter already knows what I look like, then I shouldn't realistically be discriminated based on appearance further down the line considering that it's already visible and not a surprise once I meet with them in person.
      I'd rather they judge me sooner rather than after I'm already excited about the job.

    Every "feel-good" Linked-In story: "Look at this god-level thing I accomplished under worse circumstances than you'll ever experience. Just a friendly reminder that you're a POS."
    IG posts: "Look at this idealized image of perfection that you'll never be able to achieve (because it isn't actually real). Just a friendly reminder that your life is a POS."
    Despite being dramatic about it, I think the point is made. It's still a toxic social media platform at it core because social media breeds false realities, leading to the mental self-harm that inevitably comes from the inescapable human social survival instinct of comparing yourself to what you see. (And I'm not even getting into the echo chamber effect and malicious algorithms such as is used by Facebook).
    Do you think Linked-In could save itself from inevitable demise if they step back from the more social media focused aspects of their service, and simultaneously work on those spammy low quality recruiters?

You will be weighed down with certifications like CISSP, CISM etc. when your undergraduate (because you're 21 years old and don't have a Masters) degree is in something like Mesopotamian Literature.
      And you can post a load of specious, motivational nonsense about how you've grown and learned while commenting on every piece of crap that rolls past on your timeline.

One annoying thing about it, is the spamming of "plz see my profile" when there's a post unrelated to a job, as the assumption often is (as they don't seem to take the time to read). Joel's mandate was useful though (he also said my colleague's office was 'too large'), several jobs have come my way, via LinkedIn. Thanks Joel. Also, I've met some very high level welding specialists (my discipline) this way, so GREAT resource to build your network, get good relationships going, tradeshow announcements, industry trends, etc.

    Thanks for your comments re the feel good stories. Sometimes people lay it on pretty thick. There are many people who get on LinkedIn because they need a job and if you've ever been in a situation where you need a job but can't find one, it's disappointment that leads to discouragement that leads to depression. It's important to keep these people in mind when touting your own accomplishments, especially if it doesn't contain any helpful tips or encouragement.

    For all the reasons you named, and a few more, the annoying things on LinkedIn can probably be summarized into "People Treat LinkedIn Like Facebook". LinkedIn is NOT Facebook. It should be treated as a professional network.
    I have a daily routine (that was a suggestion from an "influencer"):
    1. I try to connect with someone new each day (the influencer suggested five). But not just anyone. I look for people I know but just hadn't connected with previously, people who are connected with other strong contacts I already have and / or people at companies I'm interested or doing jobs similar to mine.
    2. I mute at least five contacts. Usually these are people posting the feel good stories and "rah rah!!" motivations. But also people posting things that really belong on Facebook like opinions on what some celebrity did recently, their "very" personal life adventures, political / religious observations (I've even blocked a few for this).
    meaningful comments or posts. I haven't got there yet, but I'm trying.

    I saw something like this on LinkedIn recently. An old coworker of mine shared a story written by a store manager at a big chain retail pharmacy store (that I also used to work for back in the day). The store manager had to cover the front register for a day 🙄 "very humbling" he says. And everyone is praising and kissing his butt about it.
    Knowing how the company works across 5 different states, it's safe to say this guy, if he started with the company, hasn't been behind a register in at least 10 years, more than likely more than that. He does it once and people are acting like he cured cancer or something. It made me sick.
    Was it humbling enough for him to pay that full-time cashier a living wage for once? Doubt it.

    I definitely would be interested in hearing more about ghosting. I find that particularly if you have gone through a few rounds and then there is no contact even when the recruiter is prescriptive concerning what the hiring timelines are. I know in some cases, there is ghosting because the position was no longer available, the hiring manager left the company, the company was being purchased. It is a little frustrating for the time spent preparing and interviewing for a role.

    #1: Allowing photos on profiles. The EEOC needs to come down hard on LinkedIn for doing this. It allows employers to discriminate before the interview process even starts.

      @@EchoTangoSuitcase Yes I did, but that isn't a helpful way to think about the problem. The goal should be to stop this from happening ever and when an employer can discriminate early in the process it is far more difficult to file an EEOC complaint. That is how this is tracked by those with the power to correct the problem. So I have considered that thought and find it repulsive. People need to look out for those that come after themselves and not just themselves. Nothing will ever improve if we can't start with helping others as what is expected.
