Crazy how 3G and 2G infrastructure both no longer work, but a GPS attachment for a handheld game system that is almost 20 years old now still works as it did at launch
The PSP Go actually IS compatible with the GPS and Camera - you just needed to buy an extremely rare official addon which converts the Go's proprietary port into a normal mini USB port with mounting peg holes, just like a normal PSP. I had a friend use her PSP Go + GPS this way to give me driving directions to a mall a few years back!
@@Hunhaar it didn't matter with that screen lol as long as it was daylight and you were outside it was like a mirror 😅 thankfully improved on future models then went backwards with psp go but it had a brighter screen so kind of offset it
I've said it before, and it's most definitely worth repeating: you make the most unique videos about things I've never heard of and I love it! Keep up the great work, I enjoy all of these videos!
6:40 Go!Explore had DLC for different map regions, even including North America, and regional releases contained their respective maps. All DLC has been archived.
Came from The Verge. This was an awesome video. I imported my PSP cam when I was in High school, I'm 35 now. It impressed everyone I showed. Always wanted the GPS but knew it wasn't gonna be much use in the US so I appreciate finally getting to see how it worked. Impressive tech for the time.
I didn't have a PSP as a kid but I do remember seeing it in stores and not only being blown away by its large screen and PS2-like graphics, but also its ability to play movies, plus as someone who was used to cartridges on the DS, I thought it was super cool that the PSP used mini disks, because in my mind that DID essentially make it a mini PS2.
For the "replacing my phone with a PSP" video, it might be a good idea to get a basic phone for only calling and texting, and use the PSP for everything else!
Its like living in early 2000s. Actually maybe bit just basic phone since early smartphones or powerful feature phones is already a thing around early 2000s. Nokia and Sony Ericsson's was one of the powerful phones back then. Or even better, old Japanese flip phones that are practically smartphones during that time.
So happy to see this video! I used this back then and roadtrip the whole Central Europe, including Italy. It was awesome. I used it with my launch psp and a car charger (still have them in my drawer). It's worth noting that you are correct about its capabilities and speed back then. The smartphone gps apps and dedicated gps devices were nowhere as fast and reliable as this device.
Bought this shortly after starting the video. This thing is so cool, and I love using old technology like this. Future Retro tech is absolutely amazing.
I never had PSP growing up, but even now it still shocks me how ahead of its time this thing was. Having it back then probably felt like having a powerful PC in your pocket, even if most people used it only for gaming
Neither did I, both because of the price but also cuz there wasn't a lot on it that appealed to me... or so I thought until I saw all these top ten lists on youtube as an adult and realized what I'd been missing. I was super impressed by its wide screen and power for a handheld.
@@dr.wolfstar1765 I mean they did put one in later and called it a ps vita but it was it's own handheld which wasn't backwards compatible with the UMD disc and sony didn't really put in any effort in it so it quickly died off But you can mod it to play psp games and it can even turn itself in a psp to play PS1 and PSP
6:15 I have the deepest respect for people like you, John. Having the confidence to not give a shit what others think in public or that you get strange looks by doing something nerdy like this. I took my niece to dance practice last week, and although I had brought my DS lite for entertainment during her 50 min of practice, I did not dare pull it up while I was sitting in the hall waiting with the other parents. Because I know that if I am getting strange looks, even if its really just in my head, then I can't enjoy myself, and that's a huge disservice to the game. Then again, when I instead saw the new Knuckles trailer on youtube on my smartphone, I barely even dared to laugh or smile because I am generally a socially angsty person who'd rather turn myself invisible.
I’ve felt this way too before. But one question i ask myself is, if they didn’t want us to grow up and like video games, why did they let us play them as a kid? Did they just expect us all to grow out of it? Generations before didn’t have the type and amount of access to media we did. It was an important part of our early lives.
Most of it is just anxiety. What you think is a giant look of shock and confusion is probably just a cursory glance that they move on from after a few seconds. Ill never do something as bombastic as like a tiktok dance in public like I see some kids do, but using a handheld is just another device.
@@OhMyPoBoy Yes, they did. As an example my mom tried her damnest to turn me away from games as I neared adulthood. Saying I should get more mature hobbies. Jon, the psp go does support the cam and gps! There's a special adapter that Sony released for the Go for you to plug in a mini-usb device :). It's fairly rare, looks like a steering wheel. Maybe it can be a future video topic? :).

Another side to this app working fine in Britain today is... Well... There's been very few changes to the city structure since the mid 2000s. It can get outdated FAST in then-less developed places and it only has two small countries supported. So scale back expectations if you want a piece of the GO GPS action.
Man, I remember owning a PSP when I was 10 years old and I only played despicable me on it and that was about it, However I never knew it could do so much more.
The PSP was and is such a cool console, I still have my 3000. I’d say the only thing holding it back game-wise was the lack of a right stick. A lot of games had to make compromises with the controls because of that
iPhone was the first touch screen smartphone (not stylus but not the first smartphone but new era of them yes). Gizmondo built in camera/GPS, PSP separate, the PSP travel apps with brochure like stuff and videos, go explore I think they were for notable stuff. I watched Biolyze cover these all in 1 go. They are interesting for how outdated they are but charming.
Dang, now I actually want to get a PSP... just for the historical value alone! The fact that it has GPS that wasn't released here in North America and yet for some reason, the NTSC versions of MGS PO use it, is genuinely perplexing to me.

At least here in Denmark the map app that comes with your iPhone isn't always up-to-date either. I went looking for a specific bank about a year ago, but no matter which suggested point on the map I went to, a bank did not exist anymore... so I ended up travelling all the way across the region for the only one I KNEW was there, which was what I was trying to avoid for the sake of convenience in the first place.
To my knowledge the GPS never released in America. I worked at GameStop during the era and never saw any games bundled with it, nor was there a SKU in the pre-owned accessories list. I wonder if the GPS function for MGS works in America. Plus, what exactly do the soldiers correlate to? Like, what context is there for the GPS to determine where the points are located.
From the few dots/soldiers Jon demonstrated in the video, they seem to be quite random, so not like actual Poké-Stops which usually are at some kind of landmark. Maybe it's something with longitude/latitude + distance from starting position and calculated based on that. If that's the case, I imagine it should also work in America.
I feel sorry for you lol from using my psp so much in college i know in England even on cloudy days that screen is like a mirror 😅 Edit if that's your original psp dam you kept it in good condition
There was a rumor that a new Switch model might have cellular capabilities. At first I laughed at the idea. But the more I think about it, the more it sounds like it could have massive potential.
Well historically devices having cellular capabilities (i. e. specifically including a SIM-card slot for mobile internet etc.) didn't do so well. I'm thinking N-Gage and especially PlayStation Vita, but I guess those systems had other pretty big problems too. :D
This may be a bit off topic, but can you explain why there is green grass in February in the UK (unless you filmed the video months ago and simply released it today) ?
