    Adam, This was a great video. It is an inspiration to anyone with a disability. I have been in a wheelchair for 6 years after a sever form of Lyme Disease caused severe nerve damage. Giving up my driver's licenses was one of the hardest things I ever did but your video has reminded me that I can drive again. Thank you for taking the time to be such an inspiration and to remind the world just because we can't walk, we are not broken.
    Blessings...

    This video was pretty informative to my girlfriend and I. We're both handicapped. However, my girlfriend has it worse than I do. She was born with Spina Bifida and is paralyzed from the waste down. I have congenital scoliosis, Hip Dysplasia in both hips, and Type A Muscular Fiber Disproportion. My girl has been wanting to drive and watching this has helped her gather some facts on how her driving set should be and your video helped her out a lot. From one handicap to another, I thank you!

    I live in PA. I had to pass neurological tests first, because of my diagnosis (neurosarcoidosis). Then I had to take 7 2-hour lessons with a driver trainer using the hand controls on his vehicle. The final test was a road test with DMV, and then I could order my vehicle and have the hand controls installed. When it was ready, I had to pass a second road test in my vehicle--controls were totally different, and I had one more session with the trainer to prepare for this road test. Driving now!

I love it, and my pulley worked well to get me up into seat. Still need to get an ultralight WC, but only can handle one "killer bill" in a year! I think most of us do. There are LOTS of different kinds. It all depends on the persons disability. For example, I saw a van that was used by a person with a disability and she doesn't have a complete set of fingers. So, her dashboard, steering wheel and driving area is like, so complex. It looked like a space ship dashboard. But, she drives very well.

    When I was 14, on my summer vacation in Russia, I bought a Lada 2107 5-speed (my first car) from a Afghanistan war veteran, who lost both of his legs in combat. It was full hand control (which I later took off) for the gas, brake and clutch. But I can't believe you had to pay that much, In Russia It would be free including installation.

    @ snowydro:With the proper training, hand controls are just as safe as using your foot pedals. We have to pas driver training and pass the same tests at the DMV that everyone else does to get our license. The California drivers handbook says driving is a privilege that is earned..not a right. I worked damned hard to earn that privilege. Been driving with hand controls for 23 years.

    I can't believe someone would say that they would rather be dead than live life, like you are. I give you credit! I have MS, and also drive. I'm starting to have alot of difficulty with my legs, and my Dr. said I shouuld start looking into hand controls. Do you have to take another driving test and all that? I use an electric scooter, and have a lift in my car for it. Rough road we endure, and it gets frusterating at times,but atleast we can still do for ourselves:) Good luck stay strong

    Hey man!, I'm your biggest fan!!, I too cannot walk and need a wheelchair to get around. I have a birth defect called Spina Bifida, I rely on my lord Jesus Christ to help me get through life, and I am so greatful. :),
    And I too own a Mazda!, I just bought a smiley Mazda 5 TEENYvan, I love it! I am going to buy another wheelchair, like yours, and I would like to know, how much does a wheelchair like yours cost, I have just a standard wheelchair but I need one like yours to put it in my MAZDA myself :), thank you. God bless you, keep up the good fight of faith! =D

    • @Aquadamm
      @Aquadamm  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey thanks man! And that's good! Just keep doing what you're doing, keep it rollin! Haha.
      Nice man! Good for you! My insurance paid for my wheelchair and it cost like $2,000 or something. I get a new one every 3 years, I think that's like a requirement for most disabled people. But, ask your insurance and also you can look around in your area if there are disability places. That's because you can apply for grants and they will pay for you chair. For instance, I applied for a grant for my basketball chair and I chose a chair and they paid for it. They are the Challenged Athletes Foundation. However, they do have a certain date you can apply and request your grant.
      But, def get a custom one because they are soo much nicer. And for some reason people are amazed how it's different and girls like them too. hahaa. So, it's like a car. haha
      Anymore questions, just email me just message me! Thanks man!

    @dawnshadows21 Love your 'tude!!! Thanks for the very informative video. Great car--especially that vibrant yellow; doors that open without pillar, with opposing hinges, are the best. I am looking at the Honda Element for that reason, and wc can be put in the back from the driver seat if you have a passenger. I prefer push to brake and twist to accelerate, on right side (brand: Veigel) with horn/high beam/turn signals on it. Before paralysis I drove man. tran., and steer LH.

    Hey Adam, thanks for sharing your video. Nice car by the way. Im curious about your controls....do you happen to know the brand name/
    model # of the hand controls and that foot plate? I'm interested in getting the same setup in my car. Thanks, Chris

    My little bro passed his driving license before he was disabled from waist down and I couldn't understand how it was possible without gas and pedal for him to ever drive and then I saw this. It makes me want to get him one as a present.
    Thing is, are these controls sold by the manufacturer or would they have to manually have it installed? And is there any webpages or anything I got to search?

      +kel kals You can actually buy a portable one online. However, it is not as stable as the one I have. If you go on Google and type AZ Portable Hand control it's $300 I think or less and you can put it on any car. =] The one I have is more permanent. The portable one it requires your thumb to push for the gas, so my thumb gets really tired after awhile. But, other than that it works great! Especially, if you go on a vacation or something and use it for rental cars.

      +Tyler Rempel My injury is T3. How about you? How's driving going? And I was misdiagnosed but I have a tumor in my spinal cord. But, anyways I have CLOVES Syndrome and there are only 155 of us in the world. But, I'm an incomplete paraplegic, so I can still feel my legs some. How about you?

    Thanks for sharing this! I appreciate it. I am getting prepared for my evaluation soon so I can get hand controls. Does anyone know if the insurance company will cover this? The hardest part is going to to be having to give up my cdl for a restricted license.

    • @Aquadamm
      @Aquadamm  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sean Hayes How did it go? And no insurance companies don't cover hand controls. You have to go to a modification place and pay out of pocket. Well, that's what I had to do. But, you can always ask them =]
