The gears for a rear ends are sold as a matched set ( ring and pinion ) their is a reason for that. What they are doing is a disaster and will not last a week.
Those pinion carrier bearings require a fair amount of preload. It is obvious from how easily it was spinning that it was too loose. What will happen under load it the pinion will deflect and wear out the oil seal in short order. A socket wrench should have been used instead of a punch on the castle nut. I guess it will be good enough considering how bad the old gears were. At least an effort was made to check and set the tooth contact area.
If you set up a 3rd member like this your ring and pinion will look just as bad in no time . A differential of that size should not spin freely and you cannot check your gear mesh pattern without some kind of load .
I believe you are correct, in that this diff spins too freely. They may have gotten the carrier bearings close enough but the pinion bearing doesn't have enough preload. BTW, *IF* the pinion is loaded correctly, that should be enough to check the mesh and backlash.
@@rupe53 Agreed . Even on much smaller differentials you should need a large wrench for leverage on the ring gear bolts to turn the ring gear , by hand you should not be able to spin it at all .

А зубья сточились из-за того что залили не то масло . В такие редуктора надо заливать масло только GL-5 . Oil only GL-5 .
