I mean let's not forget about the heavy censorships in the Filipino film industry, just this year multiple films were taken off the cinemalaya roster, like JL Burgos' Alipato at Muog that was given an X rating by the board limiting the audience reach.

What makes these discussions so hard are the diaspora Filipinos. A lot of online diaspora Filipinos like putting their two cents into everything even when it's not their place, regardless of their knowledge of/lived experience in the discussion.

Tbh, we like their input. We don't agree with their takes hahaha but as Filipinos living in the Philippines, we're interested to know about other Pinoys' world view. I do think that this era of social media makes it easy for all of us to put our two cents into everything so sometimes we do see takes that are *cringe* lol. But at least those can start conversations.

I'm a professional writer (born/raised/live in the PH) who used to have a lot of the same sentiments about Philippine cinema as you, and I didn't really get to appreciate the cultural specificity of our work until I was thinking about how my own work would be perceived by an international audience. So I really love and appreciate how you take the time to disentangle and analyse Why someone will feel this way, especially the diaspora, and in a really gentle way as well.
Admittedly even now a lot of local cinema I've watched seems to run counter to my taste, but I still feel like I have so much more to watch and discover, and videos like this to hype up our local titles and nudge people somewhere just get me excited and hopeful! It's just what we need. Plus no other country will ever produce comedy that tickles my filipino funny bone lmao. (Ang Pangarap Kong Holdap and Babae sa Septic Tank are big faves :] )
(Also love your drag media videos!!! been lurking for a little while!)

This comment means a lot! Tbh we debated on whether to even release this vid because it's such a touchy subject but I'm glad this video, at the very least, is going to show people that Filipino cinema today is more than just the romcoms and comedies that the original Fil-Am video alluded to. Thank you for your support ♥♥ ~ Momo

the problem really is that Filipinos grew up abroad has different standard compared to us who grew up here in the ph. ngl though, I find some filipino movies (mainly romcom and comedy in general) a bit... "Mababaw" when it comes to making you laugh. not all, just some.

What we actually lack is first lack of support to indie films, promotions and such. Second Filipino's patronised more of mainstream contents rather than watch those indie productions. Third we had a lot of great writers but we don't utilise them, we have so much resources and great stories but then again we love patronizing mainstream or foreign contents. Fourth most of the production here are afraid of change and innovation some do have visions but lack of funding and support. Fifth the quality of the contents are poorly done this includes equipment and directing of the story compared to Korean quality it's lacking. Sixth it's probably on the investors and the producers and script writers, they wanted to earn and create movies but they're afraid of investing. Some scripts are bad that they don't stick with the masses after they watched the whole thing. CGI are poorly taken. Then one thing people are critical of is the acting, sometimes even if the story is bad as long as your actors deliver the story well it would be well received. back in the 80s and 90s there's still a lot of good movies comedy and action which we are good at but it disappeared and changed to love stories of love teams then PH cinema started to decline. Producers can't even come up with better quality stories with quality cinematography.

Para sakin madaming movies sa Pilipinas that tackles on heavy emotions unlike western movies who tackles heavily on logic but for me it just what you prefer. If you go back from the movies in the 50s in the Philippines to now. You'll see that what often says as cringe is real to the Filipino. We are dramatic and we love heavy emotions. Movies often our way to release supress emotions, commentaries and in Philippine society in general. If you really into the plot and you'll experience it, you'll know that Philippines had good movies. It just nowadays, young filipinos want to broaden the scope from melo dramatic and heavy emotions theme movies and teleserye. We wish to be serve also that makes our mind ticks and heavy logic theme movies. That's what were missing but aside from that Philippines cinema and movies are great it just lacking diversity for those who seek hollywood style cinematic.

Para sa akin isa sa mga great movies The Boy who foretold by the stars, feng shui and barbers tale. Kung ikaw ung mahilig social commentary baka magclick ung mga ganitong movie sayo.

When it comes to horror. No jump scare of american movies that can give me a bone chilling hair raising goosebump like filipino horror movies even these days. It and conjuring are exceptions. Horror filipino movies are top notch up there. When it comes to drama and romance theres no drama in American movies these days that can make me cry after the movie. Romance is also missing in american films these days are mostly action and scifi. If anyone who grew up with me in 80s 90s knew that filipino movies action guns and bakbakan filipino are top notch up there and also legendary comedians were still alive back those times. Rest in peace for them legends. So in short romance drama and horror you gotta watch filipino.

well there's some truth in it. growing up i see a lot of remakes from a korean show/movie into a filipino one. i know they're capable of creating but why/what for? yes it's not only philippines that does this but other countries. but still. now we have netflix and the ability to change audio languages, however i see more filipino dubs on korean shows and movies vs the english shows. perhaps it's due to the mentality that 'filipinos could understand, what's the point'. well my parents still prefer watching things in filipino or on TFC. they become curious when i play a show on netflix that's in tagalog -"what are you watching?" they have the talent, they have the skills. il've always hoped that they can get to a level where my non filipino friends would ask me about a show on netflix or if i've seen so and so. Koreans have Kdrama, Thai had Ong bak and those type of movies, Indonesia had the Raid and those movies, Philippines doesn't have something that stands out. But why? Anyways, i haven't seen the original video or completed your video yet, but i wanted to mention that first.

Vice Ganda movies especially the older ones are actually good. Like you don't have to like them but they are still great lighthearted satire.
Like of course some parts of it wouldn't age well but to me films like Praybeyt Benjamin is a deconstruction of toxic masculinity and Boy Girl Bakla Tomboy is a satire in class and gender and likeeee it's soo frustrating how Vice Ganda movies are so widely bashed when there is and always is real craft and intelligence in them.
Also it's just extremely unfair reductive to negate all the artistry of those movies because it's not in line with your standards and they fall into the label of "Vice Ganda movies".

The only Filipino movies I watched were those I watched as a kid. From teens to now, it's almost always U.S. movies. The rest are from other countries. Local shows are inferior to foreign. Just being honest.

    • @jsravilob6656
      @jsravilob6656 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

For me, i think it is not inferior, it is more lacking exposure and diversity. Movies in the Philippines tackles on melodramatic and heavy emotion drama. But filipinos in general are really dramatic that is why we got hugot, emot or OA because it is our culture. I know we lack the technology for heavy scifi and logical centered movies but it doesn't make us inferior. It just we had our own identity that reflects the society at the time and place. There is cinemalaya. They had great movies out there.

@@jsravilob6656 Maybe I got used to the cinematography, camera work, acting, editing, and story telling in American, Japanese, and European shows.
