My teacher once said, "The queer community is culturally celebrated but politically discriminated." Until now, I have never seen any truer words than that. This led me to start learning about the history of the queer and drag community here. Now, a lot of people have no idea about the history of the LGBT community in general in the Philippines. Thank you for shedding a light on this important topic. I love the content!
That quote put into words a thought I've had for a long time. I grew up seeing LGBTQIA+ people in Filipino entertainment but at the same time seeing and hearing the discrimination against them in everyday life.
Like Marina and Eva, the unintentional (or intentional) aspect of drag queens being “ambassadors” to PH queer culture is so interesting to me. They set the standard and trail-blaze just as they are, just by being themselves. Whether for good or bad.
It’s true because look at how fervent we are about beauty pageants! 😅 However I think what sets Marina and Eva apart from just another “beauty queen” is that we get to see their vulnerabilities which makes them so much more endearing and relatable. 💕💕
Sadly the Philippines is not as friendly to queer people. The masses still look at queer people as on a different lens - majority of the population are so homophobic in a sense that a lot of them have a lot prejudice(like gay people will always try to get in their pants) and stay away to ordinary queer people. They would only approach us if we are recognized in some shape or form(mainly for entertainment or talent).
While it is important to show tolerance and acceptance towards the LGBTQIA+ community, I believe refraining from passing the Same-Sex Civil Union bill is a way to honor the cultural and religious values of our predominantly Christian nation, as well as uphold the traditional roles and distinctions between men and women. Sa ganitong paraan, naipapakita natin ang respeto sa nakasanayang paniniwala at tradisyon ng ating lipunan.
@@josephp5005 So sa tingin mo dapat habambuhay, walang marriage equality sa Pilipinas? How sad. Have some understanding na dapat may proteksyon tayo ng gobyerno sa pamamagitan ng Civil Union. At take note, I never said marriage sa original comment ko, I said "Civil Union" because LGBTQIA+ community is never going to be able to use reason to get the church abandon their position they didn't adopt using reason in the first place.

Your video reminded me of Super Sireyna I used to watch (I thought that was drag, I just found out today it's trans pageant). I looked it up today and realized it started at 1995! It made me realize how the lgbtq+ has been so active and loud since so long ago not just in our daily life, but also in mainstream media like movies and tv shows, and only realized the significance of it today. Mind blown 🤯
Thank you so much for this video I've been having the hard time to put into words to explain how conditional acceptance is for queer people in the Philippines How queer people in general have to work harder and, for queer performers and Drag Queens, perform harder to prove their worth and fight to take space they deserve But that's why they're so celebrated I love being Filipino and part of the queer community!
the thing about gay in Philippines is they're often associated with humour. majority of comedian's in the country dressed-up like gays to be funny while gays in America is the embodiment of hatred they're always angry.
As far as I know, the EQUALITY that the LGBTQ+ community in the Philippines in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s does not strive to the exact same EQUALITY concept that the Western counterpart has in this day. Neither the SOGIE bill (a poor copycat "again" of Western laws) is what we need and want in the Philippines. This bill if put into law will just destroy us as a Filipino community in general given our own set of morals and values which are totally different from the Western counterpart.
Dude, we have been westernized ever since the day aliens colonized us. Our authentic culture was already destroyed. The morals and values of the community you're referring to are also a copycat of another nation. The SOGIE Bill doesn’t just protect the LGBTQ+ community; it also protects cisgender women and men, especially men who are victims of certain types of abuse, certain types of crime that Filipino society often overlooks due to gender norms.

I hope the drag culture in the Philippines will be transformative in passing LGBTQIA+ legislation such as the SOGIE Bill and Same Sex Civil Union.
I hope so since it's always getting dragged down by the interferance of our Churches.
