  • Photogrammetry keeps improving every year, but what's the best choice for someone wanting to get into this type of 3D scanning, what are the costs involved, and which program delivers the best results? Come along as we copy everything from a flamingo, to a toy dinosaur to Michelangelo's David's dingus!

    Thank you very much for that informative video. I just bought a very basic 3D printer from Amazon and I'm trying to create a wing from a model airplane. I have already scoped it all the parts now I just want to scan them and make them ready for printing. You gave me a lot of information I've never done anything like this so let's see how it goes.

    Those results are pretty impressive! I wonder how well they would work for parts that need to fit together? It would be cool if you could take something apart, scan the pieces and reconstruct a functional 3D model of it!

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately it's not nearly accurate enough, especially considering that it doesn't have any concept of scale. The program doesn't know if the shoe you're capturing has the size of a thimble or the Empire State Building. To approach what you want the best method, currently, is probably laser scanning.

    • @MaltandMake
      @MaltandMake 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SwitchAndLever I thought that might be the case, I'll have to keep my eyes out for a laser scanner then!

    • @Nono-hk3is
      @Nono-hk3is 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once you have an accurate mesh of two objects, changing scale of one to match that of the other should be relatively easy. At that point you'd be able to see how accurate the scans really are by how well their meshes interlock. (Although software that can compute overlap/Interlock well will be just as difficult to find.)

    • @doubledarefan
      @doubledarefan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SwitchAndLever Does not the program have something that lets you input the size of the object? Only issue is the program would also need to know which 2 points the measurement covers.

    Great video, many thanks for taking the time to calculate all the results!. Have you ever considered making the same process for people's faces? or is it impractical to take all photos while keeping someone still? Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

    Note: Reality Capture has built in "Decimate" functions. So you don't have to pull in so many vertices. It also has more tools to cut away and fine tune what you actually capture int he end. Meshroom, unless they update it, is just not very good. 3D Zepher I haven't tried again since the new update.

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed it does, but this was comparing scanning results, not what the programs can do with the scans in post processing. Reality Capture has a tendency to add a lot of extra mesh density where it’s not needed, resulting in monstrosities of meshes. Zephyr is better at placing mesh data where it’s needed, and the textures out of Zephyr seem to have an edge in sharpness and clarity over the other two programs too. Zephyr also has tools of cutting away parts of the point cloud before mesh processing, and I believe Meshroom does too. It’s a basic feature of most photogrammetry software. I didn’t use that in my comparison though (all the cutouts are done afterwards) as I wanted to see how much of the surrounding scene they also chose to include in the final capture.

      @@SwitchAndLever I only mentioned it because it came across as a deal breaker for RC. And as with all programs, they all have strengths and weaknesses. in 3d modeling, printing and rendering, I very rarely end up with a one-program solution.
      And also mentioned RC isolating mechanics,, as from what I gather it allows more control at extraneous data selection,, not just cropping.

    3D Zephyr is impressive considering the level of detail and the low mesh count. It would be interesting to see how well it performs either using Apple's Lidar technology or against it.

  • @JamesBond-bu8co
    @JamesBond-bu8co ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey! You are wrong when you say that photogrammetry is inferior to a 3D scanner in accuracy. I recommend finding an opportunity to try Agisoft Metashape software - it's the best that exists at the moment. Also carefully study the principle of calibrating the camera before photographing (this is done in the program itself). The software needs to be calibrated each time the camera is changed, and whenever camera settings are changed. In short, the program will display on your computer screen a chessboard of white and black squares, which you need to photograph from different angles. Next, you will load the photos into the program and give the command to calibrate the camera. The program will do everything automatically, but you only need to save the received settings to a file and load them every time you use the program, because the settings are not saved.
    I also advise you to familiarize yourself with the correct method of photographing objects, especially if they are small in size and you want to get high detail. Again, in short, you need to photograph the subject from all angles, and then capture all the small nuances, first photographing the general plan and gradually moving the camera as close as your camera will allow.
    Photogrammetry allows you to get excellent quality 3D models that are not inferior to professional 3D scanners, you just need to do it in compliance with all the rules))
    Good luck!

    Accepting all the pictures provided is not necessarily a good thing. It seems likely that RealityCapture is ignoring some pictures because it concludes that they offer no new information. That would speed up processing, and may even reduce mistakes (by not trying to fit pictures that are outliers).
    I wonder if Meshroom has a slider that causes it to be more selective about which pictures to actually accept.

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except that's not how the matching process works. It first matches camera positions, which is where both Meshroom and 3DF Zephyr does better than Reality Capture and THEN it starts extracting matching points. Failure to match camera positions means it misses the chance to even extract points from those images. Now, RC seems to do good with a smaller set of images, but I would imagine if its camera matching was better it would be able to get even better results.

    • @SwitchAndLever

      Since the environment is a huge part in aligning the camera properly you may be shooting yourself in the foot to do that, and end up with lower quality scans with a minimal saving in money or computation.
