Starting with zero programming knowledge or experience this is my story of teaching myself how to use Unity, how to program, how to publish games, and finally earn a full-time remote position as a Unity developer.

This video feels like a risk. It's different. I'm not sure how much value there is to other folks. I hope there is some. I took the long slow path. Others will do it faster. Some might find it easier than I did. My goal with the video is only share and maybe to encourage. There is a path. You will make you're own heaping piles of crap and be proud of your pile of crap. You will get discouraged. But! It can be done.

This is such a great video and very helpful to me. I'm 20 years into a good career but I'm getting burnt out. I wanted to make games when I started college but life took me other directions. Now with Unity, I've rekindled those game dev dreams and it's nice to hear from someone else that successfully changed careers. Thank you.

Glad you found some part of the video helpful. Changing careers is scary and hard. Going from the experience person back to the noob in a new field takes some humility for sure :) Best of luck on finding your next path! (Always happy to help if I can.)

I grew up in La Junta, CO. BTW. Beautiful state! I so miss it. I love mountains and rolling hills.

I had to look that one up. Never made it that part of the state. I miss CO too. But pretty happy to have landed in Boise ;)

Dude your Bolt videos are legendary. What a great story! Congrats! Just a side note, if you were ever to put together some kind of 'let's build a game' course using Visual Scripting - for me that would be an instant buy.

Really great video. There is something to be said about the "Self-starter", the "Self-Learner". It wasn't an easy journey, to be sure but the likely-hood that you take the process for granted isn't going to be there. Well done. Very inspiring.

Great video and story! Making that transition is no small feat. Now, maybe sometime your company will let you share what you've been working on. I've been dying to know!

OWS, MIcaiah here, SOO want to say Sorry I jumped in a live stream, and you were sharing a few weeks ago, and I FELT you were still a teacher and doing that full time. SOOO I was asking if you wanted to make Videos and well make your game as a full-time position.
I am SOOOO happy to hear you got a job in the Industry, AND more so you can still make your game, hopefully; and seemingly continue to make TH-cam videos and build your portfolio.
Thanks for sharing this video and again sorry for any misunderstanding. I was misinformed and maybe this all happened in the meantime. It's been really fun and exciting and you're a great teacher, so we all get to benefit from that.

No worries. None at all! I generally assume folks don't know anything about me.
I would love to do YT and make my own games full time, but they're called dreams for a reason ;)
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated. Truly! Making videos isn't an easy gig and little bits of encouragement can go a long way. Hope to see you back on future stream.

Thanks for yours videos. I like when you say you wanna share your story and not tell how you should do it. This is so true. People who tries to imitate others most of the time fails.

I think all too often feel like there is the one way or the best way to do something and that just isn’t true.

I've made progress that I'm really proud of using only bolt. I know I must make the leap to code for more optimized builds. Is there a book or yt playlist to help people like me transition.

    • @OneWheelStudio
      @OneWheelStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

"Create with Code" is my go to recommendation (link below). I used it with my students the first Covid year. I'm sure there will be stuff that you already know as it starts with the basics, but it's a really good course and should get you to a decent place with C#.
      Link: learn.unity.com/course/create-with-code
These are my recommended books: kit.co/onewheelstudio/game-design-reading-list-unity-c-blender-and-more
Some could be a bit old, but in truth the basics don't go out of date.
