Man I really like that you had a picture of your friend Stu at the start. I remember it was like 5 months ago that you announced the loss. Fair play to you for keeping his memory alive. The event was a great idea, well done Rob! You are all top blokes ❤️ sorry again to Stu's family and friends for the loss of such a well liked and respected man ❤️
You've touched on something that I've been saying since 8th: GW is doing a wretched job of telling people *HOW* to play, besides teaching them the rules. There's always been a min-maxing attitude, I remember in 3rd when I was deciding my CSM purchases based on optimal choices for a while, but there was always a sense of fun and trying new things and it got severely impacted when 8th caused the hobby to get swarmed with newcomers. And what happened was that those newcomers dipped their toes into matched play and lost, hard. All the time. This had a lot of repercussions, which led to GW's rather knee-jerk and poorly done nerfs (Space marines 8th 2.0 going to 9th is a prime example, getting slammed into the pavement). But most importantly it led to people net-listing and only doing optimized armies, to mitigate their inability to compete. It takes years to understand the back and forth of rounds, to understand how to play going first or second, to deploy, to learn how to accept losing units and to win on objectives. How to deal with CCQ or other skew lists. How to deal with non-lynchpin armies (something that most competitive lists struggle to do. Nothing frustrates a competitive player more than meat and potatoes lists). But playing the game for fun doesn't take any effort at all and the hobby failed to adopt new players and take them under their wing, to teach them how to just play 40k and not 'matched games'. Which was exacerbated by GW's very tone deaf 'wArHaMmEr iS fOr EvErYoNe' messaging, obviously written by someone who is not very accepting of others. Regardless, GW should've been on top of this and done introductory games and made example lists of what your army should look like, that isn't "try-hard" or competitive.

@@dariostabletopminatures Yes. Competitive is entirely fine, the issue is that people have come over with MOBA-like mentalities and haven't experienced the root of the game and skipped directly to needing to win. Going through casual lists and learning piece by piece is the better way to more serious games and it matures the brain and tempers expectations, allowing them to blame themselves and improve instead of blaming balance.

Man, please give us an in-house battle report with these lads. I love to see the callbacks to the Imperial Guard's roots -- it's as you say, it just feels right.
I love this - I got into guard around 5th edition and those models are incredibly nostalgic. I no longer have any of them but this was a delightful blast from the past.
@@redouroboros8923 3rd ed is the best edition of 40k ever, especially with the 3.5 modifications. 10th isn't even close, it's not even a real wargame. anymore
Fun Idea, I had to check out the 3rd edition ork codex. Adrian Wood's orks came out to 1965 and i got it to 2000 exactly (with some wargear) and Andy Chambers came out to 1500 points. Both had some substitutions but they look like they might be good lists. Adrien Wood's list had 8 buggies in it!
Magnus sees Imperial Guard Captain charging towards him with a power fist. Has flash backs to getting called a nerd and being beaten up by Leman Russ. Maguns: NOPE.
Warhammer 40k should return to be balanced around 1500 pts at the most. It is a way more reasonable amount of points for new players assemble. 2k is just so much to buy, build and paint that a more causal player could spend the entire edition to build up one list.
Love it maybe I should try put together the third ed necron list for a game. I don't really have the stuff to do this with guard sadly as all my Ig are modern
Are you telling me that making a guard list based on old images feel more like guard then the sterile generic crap we have now? A SINGLE battle line choice for Imperial guard should be 1 Platoon command squad attached to a 20-50 man guard blob and then allow it to add up to 2 heavy weapon teams/Special weapon teams or a massive conscript Blobl
Those artillery units, can you use a big base, with magnets & a landscape for the troopers their bases, to sit in? That way, you can have the best of both worlds. Even makes transport, easier, I bet. Say, are you going to make a modernized variant of that army unit?
1500 was the basic bitch army. 3d edition was larger armies, up to 150-200 models per side was a small army. We had games where we had 1,000, up to tank companies.4x16, and some at 4x24, with the game spread to different tables. Hate on it all you want, but 3d edition did it right with the expansion past the platoon level.
Guys I have a previous edition question. I am slowly moving away from current 40k and I am joining a 5th edition gaming group. In those older editions, was there any incentive for the imperial guard to move forward and presure the enemy? I dont like staying back and shoor while I wait for the enemy. What type of army do you guys recommend?
No, unless you were playing an objectives game and had something you had to advance on or you weren't playing against Marines. Even then you generally aimed to shoot the enemy to death and then move for tables quarters or objective markers. IG was basically incompetent in melee combat for 3rd through 5th, so closing with the enemy just meant you got mulched faster. Sometimes you could have gimmick units like a 4 flamer special weapons team that could threaten non-marines but the tyranny of 3+ saves meant that many weapons did almost nothing. Hitting on 4s, wounding on 5s, and saving on 3s means that one round of fire from a plasma gun was worth more than the rest of the squad shooting their lasguns (18 lasgun or melee attacks for a single T4/3+ unsaved wound) and that trading a rapid fire second shot for a charge was rarely a good idea. Even the few units capable of getting a powerfist tended to pay a lot for it and be small & fragile, and the 3rd rules era (3rd, 4th, 5th, and I think 6th) was dominated by hidden powerfists. Even Ogryn struggled to accomplish much against power armor due to lack of power weapons or fists, and I don't think Bullgryn existed until a later edition. You could manage a huge combined squad with several sgts with power weapons and a commissar, but it is extremely awkward to move and use. If you want to play aggressive then you want orks, 'nids, chaos, or most but not all marine chapters. Note that vehicles were extremely strong in 5th. For much of the edition the strongest army in the game was IG with max transports. And melee in general was fairly weak, although I don't entirely remember why.

Wait, was it a 1500pt torunament? Never seen one of them since like 4th-5th edition.
Did you happen to implement the tactics included in the 3rd edition codex too? (Which are surprisingly still relevant )

Spray can primers stick to metal models just fine, so as long as you start with that they aren't too bad to paint.
