Read gut and psychology syndrome by natasha campbell mcbride. Depression is a slowing of the brain due to a river of toxicity coming from the gut. If you want to heal your gut and therefore your mind the vegan diet is the last thing you want to eat. Particularly one high in grains and starches.
Joanna, Dr. Ornish just put out a book. I mention him because he did a successful depression study and because he was suicidal as a young person and has transformed his life. His new book might be inspiring for you.
Also, dietary improvements have actually been put directly to the test against depression in an RCT in 2017 (the SMILES trial) with amazing results! This stuff actually works! :D
Why would i hang out in a local slaughterhouse? Thats just boring. Watching animals get pellets to the head, then get their blood drained and sliced up is not something i enjoy watching.
It's crazy how much this is true. Especially in light of the evidence that smoking increases oxidative stress long term. If have been a very heavy smoker and as such (plus other reasons) been quite depressed. Since I changed diet when discovering nutrition facts it has turned around my life. No medication required!!! Today I can feel the inflammation coming from just a brioche with cheese. Sometimes I think you get coffee in restaurants after a meal just to counter the effects of depression from the food with caffeine...
What about inflammatory seed oil, grain and sugar? A whole food veg diet or any whole food diet plant or meat based is useful to combat inflammation not just ANY plant based diet. I’d bet the worst diet for inflammation and depression would be based on sugar, alcohol and soybean oil and still be vegan. The video mentions perhaps little benefit for omega 3 against depression however omits what omega 6 does for depression and inflammation.
and just last night I was researching eczema and studies suggesting that atopic dermatitis is a systemic inflammation disease... I also have depression and other conditions related to systemic inflammation... I think I'll try going vegetarian for a bit. Thanks for the video!
My mom was just diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia after taking inflammation causing opioids as prescribed for twenty years. No doubt in my mind it’s connected. Her symptoms of autoimmune diseases started about five years in. I did research on opioids and immunity but she didn’t listen. They are incredibly inflammatory and her c reactive protein was always sky high. I feel so badly, she’s only 70, but I tried to tell her...diet aside, long term prescribed drugs can kill you.
Vegan alone will not help depression. 100% Raw foods/herbs, fasting, psychedelics, meditation, spiritual practice. These things will reset/rewire pathways.
Hey Dr. Greger! I've been a big fan of your work for a while now. I have come across some people stumble on a crave for meat once gone vegan. What is it? In your opinion. I've seen people say feeling weak or pale. Is this true or more of something psychological?
German, Food cravings usually mean that people have a nutritional deficiency or they aren't eating enough food. Some people don't eat enough when they go vegan. I am Whole Food Plant Based - have been for a year and I haven't had even one food craving or feeling of hunger or weakness, but I do a lot of filling dishes and I don't calorie count. Lots of people don't eat things like beans and lentils and lots of vegans eat mostly processed food versus Whole Food Plant Based. I have been aiming Whole Food Plant Based for a year, but it is easy to slide into things like vegan transition foods and vegan burritos and other vegan processed food.
Animals and humans removing themselves from social contact is almost certainly not for the good of the species, but for the good of the individual. Many species treat infected individuals in a very unpleasant fashion--when someone is sick, it's an opportunity to climb the dominance hierarchy. And that's because when you are sick, you aren't up for a fight . . .
Very interesting point. People often overestimate the level of group selection. Group selection really only applies to family members. It seems plausible that they retreat from family members (whom would not take such social opportunity). But, you are correct; it is extremely unlikely that they'd retreat to protect strangers.
@@MelissaGal1 Because evolution doesn't work on a species level. It works on the gene level, which generally gives no regard to the species as a whole. www.lesswrong.com/posts/QsMJQSFj7WfoTMNgW/the-tragedy-of-group-selectionism
You might conjecture that energy flow in the human body is decreased if inflammation is present. Rest, eat healthy, and de-stress to cure depression. Be patient, this could take 2-5 years bc inflammation didn’t get created overnight.
Although anecdotal, an interesting example is Dr. Jordan Peterson, a very well known psychologist and intellectual, who states he’s suffered from depression for years. He experimented with eliminating certain foods in his diet. He discovered that if he only ate meat then his depressive symptoms cleared. I found this quite peculiar as I have been aware of the association of depression and inflammation for some time, and how a plant based diet could decrease inflammation.
If you're still interested, look up Gojiman's videos about him. His problem is gut sensitivity and by eating only meat (which he's not sensitive to) he's treating the symptoms instead of the root cause, which is poor gut health (which could be fixed with a plant-based diet and medical treatment)
I have lots of friends that have gone total vegan and in a couple of them I can say that it made a positive improvement in them. But in some its a big negative. What I mean by that is that their personalities improved on one level but decreased on another. They became more talkative and opinionated but rarely could hold a cohesive conversation with repeating themselves many times or by going off track of the conversation.Almost like they have ADHD in some cases.

@Whats the frequency Kenneth yes I've also tried fasting and keto and lost 20kg. Exercise is the only thing I have found that helps but unsustainable . I appreciate your comment.
path within, are you eating a lot of vegetables? I believe the study said 10 servings of vegetables to help depression. You can also try spices like turmeric, cloves, rosemary and ginger. I noticed a huge negative difference when I slowly slid back from eating fruit and veggies. I stayed vegan, but I ended up eating more vegan processed food to avoid cooking and when I did that, I also stopped eating fresh fruit and veggies. Processed food contains more sodium and it really did affect my moods. I had been so happy for a long time and I found myself more neutral. (Which sounds neutral, but I grew up being suicidal and depressed, so I watch when I slide back from positive to neutral.) Lowering sodium again and increasing nutrition are things on my "list" now.
Not all depression is from diet (although I would say a fair bit is). I make sure I get my daily dozen for the best mental health, and then on top of I've cut out toxic/stressful people from my life and I make sure to get lots of sleep. The body takes time to heal, and it won't if it's not getting enough rest and/or your hormones are off balance from stress, illness, etc. Also fasting can put stress on the body (literally not just figuratively) as it has to make ketone bodies for fuel and burn muscle tissue, definitely not something you should do willy nilly and has landed lots of people in worse off health situations (including myself and other veg youtubers who figured it would help their health issues). Your body and brain run best on carbs, starving yourself does nothing but make it more stressed out I promise you, the only time it actually helps people is when their diet is crap and not eating creates less inflammation than the shit they're putting into their body. Something that also really helped with my mental health issues was going to cognitive behavioural therapy and dialectical behavioural therapy (although former more than the latter), we can sometimes get stuck in a pit of apathy, self-hatred, etc and CBT can give you skills to deal with all sorts of powerful emotions including the urge to self-harm. Don't give up and remember to take care of yourself in measurable, tracked ways (like gregger app and journaling).
This was one of the best videos from Dr. Greger ever. It hits some very good points. It emphasizes the importance of eating antioxidants with animal products. The best of both worlds is to eat lots of veggies and fruits, but also some Natural eggs and beef liver for the amazing nutrition they offer that is almost impossible to obtain with just plant based nutrition alone. I planted 2 mulberry trees and 2 elderberry bushes last summer. They are supposed to supply superb antioxidant berries, and do well in cold climates, clay soil.

@@destressfrlyf843 Just like a lot of traits that have evolutionary purposes but have no use today (like the brain and taste buds favoring sugary, salty foods because that means a lot of calories that can be stored as fat for later use when there's a famine), depression has little use for today (if we're going by the studies and articles Dr. Greger referenced in the video).
