These early Genesis games have a feeling all their own. There's something about them that makes me want to replay them often. And i wasn't even there when they were new.

In all fairness, ESWAT the arcade game is just Shinobi with a Robocop paint job. But it was still fun. But loves the Mega Drive version, this and New Zealand Story were the first two MD games I ever owned!

Very underrated. Someone gave this to me when I was a kid, when my parents owned a laundromat. I still have the cartridge, and that boss theme still rips.
Eswat was my 1st genesis game. I love it and also discover the armor cheat from the first level and take it off. It was really cool to mess around. Great game, sound and visuals.
@@ichabodcrane6198 It only works on real hardware and I don't know if there are reviews of the game that fix that bug but it's like this: just press the middle of the d-pad and depending on which way you tilt it the most, the character will look in that direction. If you release the d-pad, the armor will disappear. Doing this after you've completed the normal game will remove your armor, but choose the single shot first or the game will crash.

@@thomaselers7416 I personally liked to simplistic graphics but it definitely isn't going to compare to castlevania or gunstar heroes. It is a fun game though. It doesn't have any complex systems you need to learn so its really easy to get into.
I picked up this game, heavily used, at a seedy “Trade-a-Tape” store in the bad part of town during the twilight of the Genesis. Everything about this game and that experience defines 90’s grunge for me. I didn’t appreciate the game much at the time, but your passion for it has convinced me to revisit it.
Man, ESWAT was so amazing to me back in the day! It blows my mind that Sega never transitioned the franchise into a fully 3d shooter with the Dreamcast or OG Xbox, it seemed like a perfect fit
I really want to thank you SLX for showing me ESWAT, Ranger-X and Fatal Labyrinth. You told us to give them a chance and you were right. These were great gaming experiences and I thank you for that. Great episode to watch!!! 😀
Good review! I remember playing this one at a video rental store kiosk in the early '90s. I just could never remember its name. I definitely will have to revisit as I love these types of games no matter how short they may be. It is too bad this game never got a sequel during the latter half of the Genesis as I think they definitely could have released it on a bigger cartridge with some improved visuals and a longer game (maybe similar to Contra Hard Corps?)
This is game encapsulates who and what SEGA was as a company at the time. This gritty, crunchy, futuristic noisy game and company, They were the punk rock of the gaming industry. ESWAT has the same rebellious feel as movies like Robocop or The Terminator.
This is still a game i like to pop in every now and then. Its fun, simple, and a good time killer. I did not know that playing on Hard difficulty ended up having some extra stage hazards. I'll have to try it again sometime soon.
I pretty much owned every great hit for the Genesis. I avoided it because of mediocre magazine reviews. I only recently got my hands on this game and love it. I regret not owning it back in the day.
this was one of the games that my dad bought with the Mega Drive when he bought it, the soundtrack is as you said unforgettably good, its almost the same level as Revenge of Shinobi and Sonic and knuckles
Great to see you reviewing this ,SLX! I started playing this on original hardware recently and was surprised by how addictive it is...kept me coming back until completion :)
I can't believe I don't have this game in my collection yet. I think it looks fantastic and seems like a great play through. Need to to get it already. The box art is amazing.
This along with Ms Pac-Man altered beast krustys super fun house shadow dancer forgotten worlds and revenge of shinobi was among the first games i ever got for sega genesis
The boss theme of this game is one of my favorite on the system. Give you that sense of urgency but at the same time is pumping you up. Really good game, just a bit too hard.
This was one of my most wanted games when it was released, because I loved the arcade game. Got it for my birthday that year, and I was not disappointed.
I love that Sega did this with Eswat and Shadow Dancer. I wish they did it more. Too many times they did straight arcade conversions which can lack depth on a console and be a shallow experience.
I think E-swat (Arcade) and E-swat CUS (MD) should be considered as a Duology in which the MD version would be part 2 and not as an re-imagination. Characteristics and background demonstrate this. The Arcade places a city more from the 90's where the exoskeleton technology is new and experimental, only the criminal scientist has armor to use and closest henchmen, but most of the game you face things like: MonsterTruck, helicopters, bombings, tractors; while in E-swat CUS it feels like it is a totally futuristic city where you face drones and cyborts as a normal police officer, and the prison scenarios with laser systems or a biological weapons laboratory and other things make us understand that the adventure of each one happens at different times. Also the other difference would be the capabilities of the E-swat Exoskeleton: in the arcade version the armor cannot fly and the special weapons equipment are mounted equipment one at a time and are disposable; On the other hand, the console armor does fly and all its special weapons are not disposable, they only recharge and have more capacity. Another characteristic of the console armor is that it is more resistant, the arcade one falls apart easily.
Thanks for this! I didn't get a Genesis until 92 so I completely missed this. I don't have time for balls to the wall difficulties so this should be right up my alley!

I played this game for the first time last week and really enjoyed it. The music is definitely great, but the boss theme music has to be my favorite. There's just something super catchy about it.
You need to do a review of Mercs; of my favourite Sega games. The arcade and the original modes were great. The secrets dotted around the original were also a treat not to mention the soundtrack. It doesn’t get the credit it deserves!

It's funny. I'm a huge Sega fan starting with the Genesis but I have never tried E-SWAT. By the time I got my Genesis in 92, games like these were relegated to the "older, more primitive games" category in my head, making me ignore them in favor of the newer stuff. These days, I can see that this game has that early 16-bit Sega arcade magic and I definitely need to finally sit down and play it. I think that this video has finally convinced me to give it a try! The music really is great.
This was the first game i owned on my megadrive.I had the imported japanase console and got this with it for xmas. Was blown away by it. Later that day I got revenge of shinobi. Amazing christmas
The Genesis ver. is so amazing,.. better than the arcade's. Imho. I'm grateful I bought it back in the day. Thanks for this video, review, and analysis. Oh you stopped the video just in the final boss mirror match lol.
Before the release of Sonic, this was one of a few genesis games I really got into. It's very manageable, it's a bit short but difficult enough that it feels like a full experience. It's not as flashy as Strider but it's far more methodical, you'll want to learn which weapons you want to rely on and protect them in case of death, pickups can be rare and you can easily be stranded on the wrong side of a checkpoint without them, so another flaw is that your first try will often be your best, and sometimes only, shot at difficult parts such as boss fights. Still, the quick pace makes retries pretty painless.
One of my first Mega Drive games that I have played in the early 90's.And one of my favorites too.I would love to see a sequel to E-SWAT. I just played the Arcade version a few years later only. Good times that never will come back.
I agree Sega Lord X. As a kid this was one of my favorite games. Just the cool transformation of the dude like a Robocop kind of thing. Rocking Ass soundtrack. I haven't played this in ages.

Just like Shinobi Shadow Dancer; the console version of ESWAT was better than its arcade counterpart. The only part of the game that felt cheap was the final boss fight. If you ended the fight low on health you would die when the end boss hits you with his burner. This was his final move and was automatically triggered when you are about to kill him.
This was my first import game I ordered from Die Hard Game Fan. I remember cutting the sides of the Genesis cartridge port so the cartridge would fit! I was kinda pissed if wasn’t like the arcade but still liked it.

The Sega curse. They rarely continued a game unless it sold mad numbers. It was a big mistake. They should have evolved their games like other companies. Made them better so they would sell well.
With the Master System trying to be more than what it was, a 8bit system, I still cannot see myself being a fan but for the Genesis, that is a different system and looks more tempting than the Master System.

if a person could remake or update the Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive ESWAT game version so it feels, looks, moves, plays, sounds like the arcade game problem solved
@@jasonlee7816 Too little to late. As a kid growing up in the "bit wars" having a game on your system of choice that was also in the arcades was like gold.
