I absolutely loved ESWAT in the arcades as a kid, even if it really was just Shinobi as a cop in hindsight. But it was one of those BS games that wouldn't let you put in any more money on the final level to continue. HAted it when games do that, especially when they give you no warning.
Well Lazza tbf it did encourage me to 'git gud'TM at Shinobi and E-swat where Im still playing it today, whereas Neo-geo devs went too far the other route.. You dont hear too many people reminisce about beating Neo-geo games back in the day on one credit, I know what you mean about the lack of warning though, tis unfair..like life.lol
So many memories of this game. The best one being almost getting to the end in co-op with a classmate that would go on to become a lifelong friend. Thank you so much.
ESWAT was one of my favorite SEGA games! It took awhile to learn the play mechanics but it was awesome! Thank you for taking me back to those good ol days🌟👍🤖❤

My parents were cool with me watching R rated films as a kid (born in '81), so I grew up watching every Schwarzenegger film, but I must say that Robocop absolutely scared the crap out of me and still gives me the chills just thinking about it to this day.
Patman coming through like Jordan in a losing Chicago Balls quarter, the arcade historian we dont deserve! I played this at Peter Pan's cafe in my hometown of Walsall England, when it came out. After Golden Axe and Shinobi, and just before Shadow dancer and Alien storm which also followed in the cafe..SEGA were on fire during this time. I was also disappointed when the MD version was modified, but it was a good game none the less, and it was common for arcade conversions to be reworked, it's a shame and a mystery why SEGA relegated an arcade port to the obscure Astro city mini release meaning much of the west misses out. Lastly the second stage boss is very likely an homage to Joe Strummer lead singer of the Clash punk band, as the Stranglers is on the wall by him, yet his appearance is more like Strummer than Hugh Cornwell, Capcom did something similar to this with Birdy's stage in Street fighter with many punk bands names being visible. And very lastly, the final boss looks like some kind of weird Shriner master mason on his lodge throne.lol Thankyou Pat you never cease to reproduce my childhood arcade memories, and Im very grateful.
Great video and I remember playing the game in the arcade and on the megadrive. I now actually have the full arcade version via Mame ROM but I cannot activate the special weapons for some reason. Where the special weapons activated via a dedicated button or do I need to hold down the normal gun cannon button to fire them ? . Great memories and keep up the great work. On a side note. Eswat and RoboCop also have some terminator influences in them too especially those two Eswat robot bosses that breakdown and look like terminator skeletons.
Thanks for sharing this. I got this game in a Sega collection on my Xbox One but I really never played it. I will have to give it a good playthrough soon.
My friend and I sneaked into his older brothers room and played this on his imported Japanese Mega Drive when it was first released in 1990 - it blew my tiny mind and i've had a soft spot for it ever since - especially the amazing boss and final boss OSTs! Completed the Mega Drive version for the first time in years during the first lockdown on my RG350M, once you get the suit it really gets going. I'd absolutely love a Metroidvania-style remake, i think there's definite potential if done in a similar style to Shadow Complex or something. 🤞
I remember when E-Swat came out. I only could make it to the monster truck boss back then. Thinking about it now, it's crazy that there wasn't a suit repair power-up on the stages. Cool throwback Patman💪
Ah, 1989, just at the higher edge of Arcade games I like. Never seen this in the flesh though but I think I would had appreciated it. Thanks to emulation I can. Thanks Pat! :-)
This was a great episode PatmanQC. I remember ESwat very well in both the arcades and on my Sega Genesis. I actually never really cared for the arcade version and probably would have never gotten ESwat had it not been given to me as a gift. However, the Sega Genesis port was absolutely fantastic and I played that game for months after I got it. I will say this about the other 16-bit versions....I remember being a bit jealous that we here in the states never really got the 16-bit micros like the UK and Europe. I remember thinking "man they all must be playing arcade perfect ports of everything." Don't get me wrong I loved my Nes and Sega Master System but if you remember back then it was all about bits. If something was 16-bit it was automatically 10 times better than 8-bit or so we all thought (I was 7 or 8). At any rate, I still don't have much experience with the micros but I can honestly say the experiences I had with my Sega Genesis/Sega CD and Snes more than made up for us being a little late to the 16-bit party. Looking at ESwat for the Amiga made me very happy I had the Sega Genesis port. While it looked stunning not having the music would have driven me insane.
Usually It was either music or sound effects when it came to the Amiga which is a shame As the Amiga produced some stellar sound. Look at how bad the contra turned out on the C64 And that's pretty much what we could expect from the arcade game in 1987 on the home computers.
This is one of the first games I ever had for Sega it'll hold a special place with me probably long as I live ....eswat Forgotten worlds Ms man altered beast Shinobi George foreman's ko boxing the EA NBA games some many complete classics that give me a sense of nastolgia What a wonderful time to be a kid back in the early and mid 90s
Cool video PatmanQC, thanks. ESwat, I needed to use as many continues on the Arcade version to complete it. The Genesis version unfortunately has limited continues, and both can be very challenging. Neat game concept of Robocop. Thanks!
Your videos are really great. And man, ive had this game for years and i never knew that you got the suit later in the game. Im gonna revisit it with a friend.
1989 was a great year for everything from Pro wrestling, video games in general,, sports,e.t.c..E-Swat was a fun arcade and I must've spent over $5 bucks playing the arcade. SEGA was ruling the arcade scenes in those days. Plus, some of the music has some bits from another SEGA game that came to the cartridge the following year, Dick Tracy
id play it everyday after school in the arcades and completed it. great learning curve and fun to come back to ..plus the volume on the cabinet was maxed out , the music its so smooth and funky but the board was a pirate (like many many game in the uk) so the ending sequence was all crashed and skewered ( iu could guess though by the flashing and fading to grey it was the cliche newspaper montage thingy ) .. but anyway my personal hot champion tips... 1. When you get to the boomerang man, waste all your bullets just before he comes on screen and you can walk straight towards him, jump over the girl and take him out in ONE KICK before he gets chance to throw the boomerang. 2. Try to reach the bosses with the scatter-spray bullet special weapon . The tiger, gorilla , monster truck , black devils and most enemies are dead after 2 close-up blasts of it ,(easily the most powerful of all...the closer , the better)
Thank you for this very entertaining review. I never heard of this game until now, but I will definitely give it a try. The bosses are so insane they almost reach parody levels. The Genesis port looks great too. I'll have to try that as well.
Loved ESWAT growing up. The local Aladdin's Castle had it 👍. You familiar with Joe @ Same Name, Different Game, Patman? You guys should team up for some joint projects. Both of you guys cover the various ports of a respective game & both of you make great content! Thanks for sharing your personal story with us recently, too 🖐.
Loved the Genesis version, except for the final boss for It's anti-climatic end. You lose your suit after beating It expecting to fight him without the knock-off suit In a fair fight (Even the HUD changes). but It's just a cutscene. :(
Patman failed to mention that many of the home conversions have the character too close to the right edge of the screen when moving forward and has no way to react to incoming harm. The Genesis version is very close to my heart and is a game I boot from time to time. I can finish it without losing a life even though I didn't play it very much, just 30 years.
Although arcade cabinets have gone up pretty high in price over the years, this game can still be had pretty cheaply for couple hundred bucks fully working

But it wasn't nearly as frustrating as Shinobi shadow dancer
