@@killx17 not enough that I was expecting a documentary! There’s definitely a massive divide between supporters, and on game days it can be dangerous to be seen wearing football colours. That being said I personally have never came across anyone be nasty to me or say anything negative to me because I’m a Celtic fan. The majority of my friends are Rangers supporters, we’ve never had any arguments or fights. There’s always going to be going to be the odd idiot (from both sides) who make comments and say awful names, most of us are mature enough to behave like adults.
This is the best video ever. The guy who made it should get many awards and accolades. I have watched it literally 20 times and it still isn’t old to me.
Im irish (from the republic) a raised catholic (but not practicing) and a celtic fan and if I met a brittish, protestant, rangers fan in the pub id put my arm round him, sing songs of our past and buy the man a drink. Hatred is pointless and gets us nothing but hardship, we need 2 band 2gether and fight the corruption of our governments and not each other.
Being an American I thought people are crazy about sports teams here, this takes the cake. Although this I think is much more of social/cultural/political rivalry than the actual Football. Please correct me if Im wrong.
+ravi8490 It's not so much the sport, rather the history behind it. In the USA sports teams don't really have that much history to it other than it was founded for some local lads to have fun and then grew in to a big thing. But this rivalry isn't to do with football as much as it is to the history of the cultures that both club represents. At one point, the British Protestants (Rangers) invaded Ireland and subjugated the Irish Catholics (Celtic). The Irish fought back and thats how it is. Both sides feel they are in the right and the other is in the wrong.
+ravi8490 Nothing in American sports compares to the animosity that is Rangers and Celtic. They don't segregate the fans at American sporting events. In Britain, the visiting team's fans sit in a separate area from the home fans, and they often get a police escort to and from the train station/car park for their own safety. In Scotland, when Rangers and Celtic play, the number of hospital visits due to violence triples.
People think Celtic and rangers is giant. It is in Glasgow but nobody cares about it. If your American you need to look at American football fans. Singing real songs, embarrassing dancing, moaning. That is pretty much what happens. If you have ever been to this match correct me if I'm wrong, I'm comparing to the fans during the match. Wigan and Bolton is bigger than this for the fans. This is why... We fight all the time, smoke goes off unless the stewards are on guard for checking, loud fans, chanting towards players and fans.
Yeah, man. I watched this video the month it originally came out. I just thought back now to check it on it and see if someone in the comments could provide an update. I love this documentary.
I wish they did it, but unfortunately Vice, as a company, filed for bankruptcy in 2023 and is now effectively owned by its former lenders. They're basically broke now. That's because they moved their focus from making interesting documentaries like these or about political conflicts that mainstream media never really report about to something only liberal hippies would watch
I just love football rivalries like this. There is so much passion and fire and I think that to certain extent such fire should always be part of football. "Some people believe that football is a matter of life and death. I can assure you it's much, much more important than that." ─ Bill Shankly
I don't know, I've always thought that it was somewhat ridiculous. In a way I'm happy they dedicate themselved to football rather than being say, religious fanatics, but it's kind of the same energy, at least they keep it between themselves, most of the time. However they should just be honest about what they do and simpoy meet up every other week for a scrap, I really fail to see the connection with football.
Say this prayer Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. My Dad was born in Aberdeen & my Mom in Glasgow. And after they married, my Dad, whether by choice or not became a dyed in the wool Hoops fan. Still following them religiously (until he passed away 2 years ago) from here in Canada since emigrating from the auld country in the late 50’s. Yet when my interest in the ‘Beautiful Game’ peaked & despite not having an Italian bone in my body, because the Serie A was/has & always will be very popular here in Toronto-Canada, I fell head over heels for AC Milan. A team I still proudly support to this very day. That said the more I read, watch & hear about this rivalry, the more I want to get a piece of it too. And of course by cheering on the lads in the green & white if & or when I do, as well.
I've heard that while it's dangerous for a Protestant to go to the wrong parts of Glasgow, and it's dangerous for a Catholic to go to the wrong parts of Glasgow, it's dangerous for a sheep to go to all parts of Aberdeen.
If I was ever to inform anyone on the OF and football culture in Scotland this would always be my first point of reference. No overdramatised bullshit, real content and insightful throughout. Not a single misheard subtitle in the full 45 minutes which is also a first 😂
@@billymorrissey4815 It does make sense. The reason he finds this biased documentry to be good is because he's a 14 year old boy with little knowledge about anything.

Here in the US there was never much of a chance to view Scottish Premier League, but with the advent of the intarwebz we who sought out top flight Euro clubs could see a lot more. Several ago I became a fan of Celtic with Henrik Larsson scoring at an absurd rate. At the time I didn't know they were the Catholic side, myself being Catholic only made me more of a fan. Being of Irish heritage only strengthened that. Cheers from a Glasgow Celtic supporter in New Orleans!

Great segment brought back good memories of me as a teenager going to the Barras and off to parkhead to watch Celtic and Rangers play it was rowdy but I never felt my life was in danger.. God bless the people of Glasgow best city in the world
Not really. I am a Honduran and the reason of the war was mainly territorial-the Honduran government expelled a group of Salvadoran villagers who were illegally invading Honduran lands and because of this the Salvadoran government started the conflict-the game you are talking about took place a couple days before the Salvadoran invasion. Honduras by the way had two players in Scotland-Emilio Izaguirre playing for Celtic and Arnold Peralta playing for Rangers.
The documentary maker makes a comment towards the end regarding Nil By Mouth being people that weren't involved/didn't know what they talking about - Nil By Mouth was set up by Cara Henderson, girlfriend of Mark Scott (young Celtic fan who had his throat slit by Jason Campbell) at the time of his death.
+Vince McMahon he has catholic and Protestant roots. His dad was a Rangers fan/Prod, mum Catholic and not football inclined. So it's easy to see how he got there
I’m from NY and my friend is from Scotland. He used to go to all the celtic games when he was there. When he came here he would try to explain this rivalry to me. There maybe no fuckin rivalry in the world like Celtic Rangers. Besides the religious aspect this is what sports are all about. Oh and by the way had season tickets to Celtic Park. CMON YOU BOYS IN GREEN!!!!
Thinking back now to those dark days of the spring of '12 and how close the club came to dying, it's scary. And it was a scary and nerve-wracking time. Did this last OF win and Barrie McKay's goal make up for it? I wouldn't want to relieve those weeks of anxiety and of not knowing if the club were going to survive, but that OF win was, honest to God, one of the best days of my life.
Mr. Roboto watch the Jeremy Kyle show I’ve watched lots of episodes and in most they’re teeth are crooked as hell its as if braces don’t exist in the uk
Yeah, we don't like each other but it's not a religious thing (hasn't been for a long time) and there's stories of much worse and more intense football rivalries throughout the world. I remember reading about the head of an ultra group who raped a rival on the grave of his friend. Which isn't quite as bad as calling each other Fenian and Orange bastards for 90 minutes according to Vice.
That's only 50% of the story. To truly understand Celtic and what it represents you need to Ireland. Celtic is a slap in the face of British empire and imperialism .
Not really a slap in the face, we just let them sing their songs and play their games. If they want to start their rebellion again they know theyll die
+Justin Hawthorne I just looked again, and I still can't find a United Ireland on any map. That part in the North still looks like it belongs to Her Majesty. Funny that, eh?
It's nothing to do with football really. People just like the adreneline rush of the atmosphere that the artificial rivalry creates. The people who get involved with violence do so just for the violence - they get some thrill out of it. I remember a prominent member of the IRA once saying that if he'd been born a few yards further down his road he wouild be fighting for the other side and with just as much enthusiasm. That really says everthing.Unfortunately people tend to define themselves by the things they like. You counld say 'I like to watch Celtic' or 'I'm a Celtic fan'. The last one defines you, so any attack on Celtic becomes and attack on you, that's the problem.
I respect the rivalry, and have a soft spot for Celtic, but no Rivalry in Britain is the worlds most dangerous. South American and Eastern European clubs would have a word to say about that.
Albort Ross hell no, scotlands much more dangerous than anywhere else regarding football rivalry in fact, in glasgow, youd be fucked just being an american, thats not a diss, just saying its much more rough over here than you think.
***** I know they can be vicious mongloids, but its nothing compared to some of the stuff that goes on in Eastern europe and South America. Mainly because they simply don't have many guns.
"what do you think it is about glasgow that generates this kind of gang culture?" "its hard to put your finger on it" really? i dont think its that hard to figure out. combine abject poverty and a two tiered society where the rich and the poor are vastly separated with religious and cultural friction and voila, you're more or less left with why glasgow and the west of scotland is the way it is. doesn't take a genius to figure it out.
The best old firm games are the cup games, unbelievable atmosphere, although it's not at the nest stadium in Glasgow, ibrox, it still holds my best memories growing up.

I'm not too keen on football violence but you cannot deny that the jokes that both sides tell in this doc are just top notch.
I'm from Sunderland and went to watch Celtic play a few years ago. Were very welcoming people. As long as you're there to support Celtic, they couldn't give a toss
Not true, my friend is half Irish and went to Celtic with his fully Irish dad, but because they both had English accents they got quite a bit of hassle and never went again

Oh wow, I wasn’t expecting this. I’m from Glasgow, lived here my whole life and it’s jarring to see this rivalry between the two teams been made into a whole documentary.
its not that big of a deal over there like the reporter makes it seem?
@@killx17 not enough that I was expecting a documentary! There’s definitely a massive divide between supporters, and on game days it can be dangerous to be seen wearing football colours. That being said I personally have never came across anyone be nasty to me or say anything negative to me because I’m a Celtic fan. The majority of my friends are Rangers supporters, we’ve never had any arguments or fights. There’s always going to be going to be the odd idiot (from both sides) who make comments and say awful names, most of us are mature enough to behave like adults.

Love this documentary. Very well done. When Vice was Vice

You were cooking with this comment my dude
I'm glad for those subtitles or I wouldn't understand a thing.
There are lots of other rivalries just as intense as this, some more so
+343ethan343 please name some
+ravi8490 Nothing in American sports compares to the animosity that is Rangers and Celtic.
You have to do a "where are they now" of these guys.

Thank God for the subtitles.

El Salvador and Honduras legit fought a war against each other because of football

Still watching this in 2024 the amenity from Both sides is horrible I'm a Celtic fan from Ireland
South American and Eastern European clubs would have a word to say about that.

really? i dont think its that hard to figure out. combine abject poverty and a two tiered society where the rich and the poor are vastly separated with religious and cultural friction and voila, you're more or less left with why glasgow and the west of scotland is the way it is. doesn't take a genius to figure it out.
