That claim of the 1NZ engine being unreliable is totally inaccurate. My little 07 Yaris has been reliably serviced, and has about 600k (597k to be exact) miles on the original engine. It consumes about 1 qrt per 1900 miles. And she still runs as strong as when new. No, oil leaks, nor noises. A valve seal change is in the plans, the we will put many more miles on her. Lol

It definitely can have some of the issues stated in the video but it's definitely not common for all these things. But under normal use this is an amazing engine that can last 300k miles.
Coming up on a quarter million miles with zero issues. After 12 years of owning this car, other than maintenance the ONLY part I've ever replaced is 1 starter and 1 VVT solenoid. It burns about 3/4 a quart every 4,000 miles
False information, just need Good oil, no mineral and original coolant in the sistem and it will go more than 500k miles with just a little oil consumption.
I just bought a 2005 Scion XA with 241,*** miles. I bought it because I knew it was reliable. This is going to be my daily driver. I’ve got a Corolla with one of these engines. It’s so far been excellent. Just approached 160000km or 100000miles. It uses no oil, make no rattles and doesn’t leak. It’s been serviced every 10000km since new.
Very inaccurate video, leaking and oil consumption was a problem on the 2AZFE engine tho' that motor was really pretty good. The 1NZFE is one of the most reliable engines ever built, easy to maintain and very efficient, really dont start seeing wear until 250K. Car Wizard describes this engine as a "rock" notably in the 2nd gen Prius. He says, literally like a rock you can come back 10 years later and nothing has changed it is so insanely reliable.
i have have to say BS on the stretched chain, I opened it up to change the timing chain at around 290K miles, when I put the old next to the new, you could not tell them apart.. shes at 365k now and a failed fan relay switch caused a overheat which slightly breached the head gasket.. time to take care of that and valve guide oil seals.. I never done port matching or polishing but theres a first time for everything.. this motor is truly TOP GUN 2000 1NZ-FE I SALUTE the engineers who designed this unit.. note: buy the OEM part and avoid the cheap aftermarket
This is the most inaccurate video regarding the 1nz-fe. I have an 06 scion xb with over 240k miles on it, I change my oil every 3k miles and make sure it's maintained and not beaten on, and I haven't had a single leak on it. This motor is SUPER reliable and will give you over 300k miles if you take care of it LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO! You, are incorrect sir.
One of the best engines that Toyota has ever made . They run forever as long as you use good oil and don't go more than 4,000 miles between oil . changes .simple maintenance also helps, like tune up once a year (spark plugs) and replace the air filter regularly. Using a good sinthetic brand oil also is a good idea. I've seen these cars with over 500 thousand miles on the odometer and they are still going. 🙄
I have 1NZ FE on my 2004 vios. 300000+ milage. Still water coming out from exhaust. When car is on idling you don’t even notice car is on or off. Its really smooth and quite. Just look after the engine well. Do the engine tune up on right time. This engine is rock solid.

I notice they changed the radiator and the coolant hose , radiator spout placements, after the first generation Vios.. If the 1st generation Vios are running hot and indeed taking a toll on the Head Gasket, it could also be due to the large engine beauty cover. This black thick plastic engine cover seems to retain and insulate engine heat. I rented a newer 2018 Vios with the 1NR-FE engine., I noticed the engine beauty cover is less than 1/2 the size of the one on our 2003 Vios 1NZ-FE. And it has open sides and open rear sections for heat dissipation; i would think the engineers saw the issue with retained engine heat, even after shut-down. So perhaps, given that most 1NZ-FE engines are used in temperate countries, where heat is not really an issue, the 1NZ-FE engine is excellent. And if this is so, all i have to do is remove or cut to half size the engine beauty cover to avoid retained heat . cheers !
If I'm not mistaken, some of these issues can be prevented by having the oil changed when it is called for (or earlier then what is listed in the manual)

You can also say that you are a frog but like this that doesn't make it True
Kory Radial
Hilarious! I have 223K on my 2004 Scion XB and you cannot kill this thing!
Abdiel Bridge
My 2004 has 284000 miles /457000 km. Runs great, does burn oil. Otherwise seems to have all the original power and no issues
215k mark now 🙂🙂🙂
Francisca Radial
Deserves a dislike😂
😂😂 what nonsense
Good engine, 400K
This is a lie
06 scion xb automatic. 212k miles. Starter failed. Water pump almost failed (serviced before failure). Valve cover barely barely sweats oil. Leaks absolutely nothing but air-conditioning condensation. Burns zero oil, zero smoke from exhaust. 1nz fam lets fkn gooooooooo.
The 1NZ-FE and really bad, the most reliable engine in the world and the DV6 from Peugeot
Thanks for the video! I saw oil near the exhaust manifold but couldn't diagnose where it was coming from, will definitely check out the rear crank shaft oil seal.
I have 07 manual hatchback and just hit 300 thousand miles no issues with the engine still running strong other than it does burn some oil hope to get 100 thousand more miles.....
Engine life is 150k - LOL - not a mechanic, are you?
Is there a way to clean rings without remove engine?
I have 1 NR-FE 1.33 engine, and it consume 1liter oil for 1000km
