I love this kata! It's simple, easy to understand the applications, and very strong. Making this kata with speed and strength is sure the most important thing, but as a lover of this kata I have twisted my nose in three or four moves here... Excellent performance though.
why all the hate on luca? has it ever come across to you that after a kata had migrated all over the world, the bunkai, principles, techniques could have been altered to suit each persons need? The okinawans are innovative ppl, they do it all the time. Jion is not an easy kata to do, I still find it one of the most challenging kata as compared to kanku dai, kanku sho etc.. Since its movements are very straightforward, mistakes are easy to spot. No kata is ever perfect of course, this is no exception. but let's not deny the fact that this is not a bad kata at all.. so plow just enjoy the performance
He's a great athlete and committed to his art. Which is why he is so dynamic and impressive to the less knowledgeable. But the principles of technique and kata performance should not change because they impact on kumite, real kumite, not sport karate. He may have been taught that way. I'm not going to critique his performance. We should all try to find the best teachers and critically analyse what we are taught, then pass it on. Osu. 🥋👊👍
Your comment lines up with my experiences doing competitions. I focused more on having correct stances and finishing my moves, but my peers who focused on speed (which translates into looking powerful) always won over me, and still do.
I can't believe the critics on here ? Mr Valdesi is extraordinary at his kata .. this should be obvious as he wins do much ! Sure there are individual interpretations of any form .. Valdesi is over 6ft, I am just on 5ft .. My approach to this kata might be different .. As for the experts out there who 'know everything' , how about posting something of yourself out there or win a few world championships or two ..,
I enjoyed his rendition of Ji'on. A color belt or lower level black belt martial artist will point out what they feel was incorrect with his technique. A master will observe his total performance and see the true aspects of martial arts within his performance. The discipline, focus, concentration, intensity ect all were there. Could it be better, of course. Experience over time will mold him into an even better artist. That's why he is one of the best.
My sensei told me too watch this for homework and see what he is doing. Though in such as 0:59 their is different styles too. You can either first put the leg or all together I think.
@feelmychi I agree 100%. He uses shortcuts to make his arm *look* faster. Then he has to delay beginning to move them because of the time it takes for his legs to catch up. I see jerky, weak technique. A much better YT version is the one by Yamaguchi (an Asai disciple) where you see more connected, powerful, complete and fluid technique.
@multiplecocco I think I did not make my point clear enough. When I said branch I meant if he does JKA Shotokan, WKF Shotokan , etc. He must follow the rules of one federation or another.
@multiplecocco I am from Romania (i'm in SKDUN federation) . Yes , very powerful on his hips indeed. He would be an awsome karateka if he would have more spirit. I see only dedication for The Sport Shotokan , not Spirit, Mind , Body of Shotokan.
@anouni1713 WHen the hips are on it should be poised at the side of the body (under shoulder) when hips are off the elbows should be in line, if your fist was in line with your spine it would make your shoulder unnecessarily tense
I agree. The west has a lot to answer for. Karate is about self defence. Each strike, possibly a finisher. Kata is important to improve technique with the end point in mind. Kata for kata's sake was never intended to be karate.
@multiplecocco yep , i've said this is a good kata becouse i did not want people be against me , alot of Valdesi fans around...the truth is that he have a very good speed and positions.
I have a problem with his hikite. shouldn't it be pulled back a little bit more? shouldn't it be aligned to the spine? sorry, that's what my sensei taught me.
Maybe Jion is not the best kata to evaluate hip work, but try to place youself on his fists' path, or simply train with him to see how effective his hipwork can be, and how he focuses on hipwork. Heels lifted and Hikite are not a great matter, as long as you keep your movement effective, IMHO....
MaT A Not a matter in terms of effectiveness, I mean. However I don't see so many lifted heels in this video, the stances are well balanced and strong even when he moves fast.
he is not arming properly , half arming and i've seen there some wrong fast moves (you have to watch closely to see those mastakes) his speed is great, nice positions...in total , a good kata
@multiplecocco Since you said you know Luca personally, do you know what branch of Shotokan he practices? We don't hold our foot on the tip of our toes in that final bit and Jion is supposed to be shitei kata. It made me wonder. Cheers.
I'm 6th Kyu of Karate Shotokan and my favorite Katas are "Heian godan" and "Bassai Dai" and your hitike hand is not placed correctly...you may be the champion and a fast movement tipe but trust me you have alot of mistakes to correct there if you wanna get far mate! Cya later.
Strange to listen to all the comments about how poor this performance was. Guess I'm not very good either because he moved in a highly skilled way that I feel easily is superior to my performances and I'm a teacher. Do we need perfect in order to feel content?
If you aren't aiming to be perfect, then what's the point? It should at least be the goal, even if its impossible to achieve. The issue is that Valdesi has had the same issues for years, which means he's not improving, or even worse, he maintains them because they win competitions. In either case he has fundamental problems that should've been ironed out in his kyu grades. He's a talented athlete, but a poor karateka.

I don't like the way he did it. Of course, he's a very good karateka with a lot of strength and focus but : the breathing is loud, the rhythm is chopped. I feel lot of crispation. Easy to say, not sure if I can do best, but it's my feeling.
Good stances but really I don’t understand why in this competition they go so fast ?!? What’s the interest, you can’t even see exactly the beauty of the kata :(
Am I the only person that doesn't like this? When I see, say, Asai or Kanazawa doing kata, I know that if their techniques connected with me I'd wake up in the next world. I don't think this guy's techniques would be any more effective than the next McDojo sensei judging from this kata if I'm perfectly honest. They just looked weak and rushed.
I love the crispness of the guy, and this is one of my favourite kata's.
Valdelsi has got really solid katas. I always like seeing his kata performances.
Well done the kata served me for my karate performance and I had to do that kata !!! Thanks Jesse Enkanp !!!
He's fast and very focused. I love it!
I love this kata! It's simple, easy to understand the applications, and very strong. Making this kata with speed and strength is sure the most important thing, but as a lover of this kata I have twisted my nose in three or four moves here... Excellent performance though.
I did Jion for my shodan exam over 20 years ago. I still like the kata but...
I think Luca might be just a tad better than I was!
why all the hate on luca? has it ever come across to you that after a kata had migrated all over the world, the bunkai, principles, techniques could have been altered to suit each persons need? dont blame the athletes. the JUDGES allow it. If someone wins like he does. everyone copies because the judges score it like that. JUDGES, JUDGES.
Your comment lines up with my experiences doing competitions. I focused more on having correct stances and finishing my moves, but my peers who focused on speed (which translates into looking powerful) always won over me, and still do.
@@MoonAndMidnight Kind of baffling
excellent ot my knwoledge performance! Speed is outstanding! Well DONE!
So good. Look at the speed and power.
I can't believe the critics on here ? Mr Valdesi is extraordinary at his kata .. this should be obvious as he wins do much ! Sure there are individual interpretations of any form .. TENHO MUITA SAUDADE DO TEMPO QUE FAZIA KARATE SHOTOKAN É MUITO BOM PARA A MENTE E PARA O CORPO
he shakes his hands too much before he kicks
Well executed, speed and power

Mark Kanaar in this tournament you wear either a blue or red belt. He is actually a high ranked black belt
Love this comment

Très Bell kata. Les position sont très bien. Bravo
I like this kata more than other performances by Valdesi, possibly because the nature of Jion leaves little room for theatrical pauses.
Fantastico
melhor kata do mundo...
Pedro Okami sei fazer
@feelmychi I agree 100%. He uses shortcuts to make his arm *look* faster. Then he has to delay beginning to move them because of the time it takes for his legs to catch up. Power and speed is admirable. Wish his stances and certain timings between moves could be better. Still great 👍
KARATE ARTE MILENAR QUE SOU APAIXONADO DE PAIXÃO
@asd748wsx for faster execution of punches as the technique is slightly shortened
Très Bell kata. Les position sont très bien. B
Very very good! You are very fast!
fenomenale

Power full,,,, besttt oss karateka Indonesia
In shorin ryu jion is very different
Tremendo! muy bueno.
@madgecic interesting. is this widespread in sport karate shotokan circles?
Ok my real name is Jion xd
@multiplecocco I am from Romania (i'm in SKDUN federation) . Yes , very powerful on his hips indeed. He would be an awsome karateka if he would have more spirit. I see only dedication for The Sport Shotokan , not Spirit, Mind , Body of Shotokan.

Now, THIS is more of a solid performance. Still, some of his movements are too flashy. However, overall this performance is very good.
Great!! Goin to film at Belgrade?
I agree. The west has a lot to answer for. Karate is about self defence. Each strike, possibly a finisher. Kata is important to improve technique with the end point in mind. Kata for kata's sake was never intended to be karate.
thank you :))
Unfortunately, I didn't like it. I felt like he was just grinding it fast. The whole Kata merged. The slower part was not highlighted.
@multiplecocco yep , i've said this is a good kata becouse i did not want people be against me , alot of Valdesi fans around...the truth is that he have a very good speed and positions.

@jrshoto007 except that it wasn't, because the word biomechanics does not say anything relating to my question :)
bravissimo...
I have a problem with his hikite. shouldn't it be pulled back a little bit more? shouldn't it be aligned to the spine? sorry, that's what my sensei taught me.
karate is the best sport ever :):):D
Incomplete movements, heel lifted when change directions (zen kutsu dachi), incomplete "hikite", no hip work.
Totally agree dude!
agree.
Why do you only concentrate on the negative things, its not like like your the best at karate. Plus there is no space between the zen and the kutsu.
I can't see this as a first place performance.

Ya
nice!
He’s very strong and fast! But i can’t understand how he can win titles while making such fouls!
he is very fast - how come his pull back hand is not all the way back?
This is a very different version to the Shito Ryu style.
How does a red belt know this?
It is just a designation for tournaments. 1 wears red the other blue.
Dannymanisminecraft he is probably black belt, red belt is only for tournaments
Red belt is for the tournament
well the kata should more clear its a bit obscure otherwise good......... Should mitigate the speed level uptil a certain level.....
i see that everyone here is 10th dan grandmaster of karate from Okinawa. And this makes me sad...
good
perfect
at this level it's upset to see that some guys can't do a correct zenkutsu dashi and no kime
he is not arming properly , half arming and i've seen there some wrong fast moves (you have to watch closely to see those mastakes) his speed is great, nice positions...in total , a good kata
Valdesi is a sensei?
luca valdesi is the best
im brasilian haters
interesting that he uses a high hikite. i wonder why?
Good power but some of the stunts have been mistaken.
Luca, we both know you're better than that! Foot position on the mae Geri!!!!
@multiplecocco Since you said you know Luca personally, do you know what branch of Shotokan he practices? We don't hold our foot on the tip of our toes in that final bit and Jion is supposed to be shitei kata. It made me wonder. Cheers.
1:06 Bad turn
On the third step, as he performs mae geri, his left arm makes a bizarre movement.
Cya later.

Not my shotokan!
Not the sligtest trace of traditional shotokan karate do.. what a shame .

sorry, I downvoted when i meant the opposite... yeah, there are some movements I didn't like either
tuto parlato españolo
@asd748wsx exactly my point hehe
@asd748wsx it SHOULD have been :)
practicing the okinawan shorin-ryu jion, this looks absolutely no karate. why did they have to make it a sport it's so sad :(
Am I the only person that doesn't like this? When I see, say, Asai or Kanazawa doing kata, I know that if their techniques connected with me I'd wake up in the next world. @asd748wsx biomechanics
Very nice, but this dont kills
I looks so robotics and forceful.
Mike G G I bet you can do it better :)
Karate became robot..not karate
@jrshoto007 ugh... buddhists :p
I'm beginning to dislike his "patterns" more and more these days...idk why but he seems so...monotonous in terms of bujutsu
My favourite kata but I’m not a fan of Luca valdesi
Senza valore
Yes, he is fast but have a very weak technique....
