I just can't understand how this work of Bach's is not more famous and celebrated. Yes, the subject is nicked from another composer and it doesn't have a companion piece preceding it but Bach really lets his fathomless powers of invention off the leash in this mind boggling double fugue. When the first subject returns in the final section, it forms a precision-engineered symbiosis with the second that is simply beyond perfection, offering limitless opportunities for harmonic combinations. To top it off, we get probably the most outrageous ending Bach ever tacked on to a finished fugue. Looks like Ulf Norberg had some fun with this one.

I completely agree. This piece is completely overlooked, and most recordings fail to express the grandeur of the piece. When the two fugue themes are finally played simultaneously, it's very exciting! I wouldn't play it early as fast as Norberg does, and I would keep it on full organ so that it ends not with a whimper, but a bang, but it's a memorable performance anyway.

They do.... In earlier years.... And they still do.
