They retroactively made all mounts able to fly because they knew that after awhile, any mounts that couldn't fly would just never be used (since flying speed is faster than the mount moving on land) and so if someone had a favorite mount that wasn't practical to use, they'd be upset.
Also, there's been a fair number of mounts added in the year since that video came out.
Didn't even get to see the Eden 12 Sav mount, new mounts tied to Bozja like Gabriel Mark III, every major or every other major patch there's new mounts to chase.

This is also one of the reasons Kirin has wings. Because the grind for Kirin which is a great looking mount was mild pain and it couldn't even fly. So they gave it wings.

When they first introduced flying, they made it so that the only mounts that could fly were the ones that thematically made sense. However, it turns out that since flying is faster than walking... everybody pretty much only used mounts that could fly. So they just went "fuck it, everything can fly now".
Not gonna lie...I kind of hate that. Some things just should not fly.

Fun Fact about the Fatter CAt mount: It's a demon-possessed bloated corpse of a cat that died of obescity. No, I am not joking, it's in the actual lore/flavor text of the game. That's how it flies. And yes, I own one XP It's my default mount when I play Ninja.

Behemot have even more muscle than a Baki character, so I think he can compress enough the air to make it solid under his feet
00:48:34 You probably won't see this, but the game explains most flying mounts (without wings) as having wind crystals in the saddles or somewhere on the mount itself. In the lore, wind crystals allow things to float (one of the expansions has floating islands that can only remain in the air because they have giant wind crystals embedded in them).

@@animagamer2 they try to make everything lore accurate. Those not covered in-game are covered in lore books and live letters.
@@animagamer2 every single mount and minion (non-combat pets) have descriptions not only on the item used to obtain them but also in the menu you use to pick which one you'd like to use. Even the Triple Triad cards (for a minigame in the golden saucer) have little info dumps.
Also, maybe one of my favorite small touches in Shadowbringers? You get a minion based on an important character in the story and if you talk to them afterwards you have a dialogue option to show them said minion.
Ground mounts stay relevant in WoW because they restrict flying in new zones for at least a patch. If that wasn't the case people would complain about the same thing in WoW as well.
It is weird for some mounts but it's no big deal really, and better than never being able to use the cool mount you spent weeks farming.

She didn't mention it in the video, but a lot of the mounts have unique music that plays while riding them. The main purpose for the trial mounts (the 6-9 recolors of basic designs) is so that you can hear that boss's unique music as you go exploring around. I still use one of the base A realm reborn mounts because the song is dumb and I love it.

Germany doesn't have a clean past, but it definitely had positive periods and time again you think we've learned from past mistakes, but collectively you have enough fools in each country that they move towards failure again.
You try to show them their folly and they just don't see it. I gave up trying to convince people, I just try to live my own life virtuously and make sure my personal actions don't contribute any further to the downfall of goodness. Best of luck to you in Germany man. I have some good German friends, one who suffered a lot from needless guilt for his country's dark past when he bore none of that responsibility. I hope we can get back to just having fun again.

I remember in WoD when they added the Gorestrider Gronnling as the meta mount for HM and BRF and people complained that they were given a ground mount for a meta-achievement mount for the first time. Having every mount be usable for everything literally creates diversity and variation because you can use EVERY SINGLE MOUNT WHEN YOU WANT TO AND NOT BE PENALIZED FOR IT lmao. the fucking copium and mental gymnastics people will go through to find issues with another game.

Finally caved and started playing this game a few days ago. First thing I saw as soon as I walked into the main hub area in one of the cities was a group of bards playing For Whom The Bell Tolls and then they played Breaking The Law. Thought that was pretty fuckin awesome. Ended up playing for 14 hours. I'm fucking addicted. I'm sad to see that the motorcycle mount is pay only cuz as soon as i saw it in game I thought "I need that." Will probably end up paying for it lets be honest.
My biggest hesitation was the aesthetic of the game and the whole "weeb" thing, but it's pretty easy to look past that and a stupid reason to deprive myself of having fun playing.
The performance system is tied to the Bard. Once you unlock the job at level 30 you have access to all the instruments. That includes things like a lute, violin, piano, electric guitar, etc.
@@nightsong89 Yeah, I was looking into it and it seemed so cool. Someone ruined it for me though by explaining that they're likely using 3rd party software to play the instruments that well together. but still, it was great lol
@@nothanks9174 yea… there’s a third party program that can play the songs for you. Still a wonderful addition to the game and it’s always fun to see what songs are being performed in the main cities.
Just fyi, the motorcycle used to be a freebie if you went to the Fanfest gathering prior to Shadowbringer 2 years ago, was put on cash shop for ppl that didnt attend and wanted it.

The audio files they play are really bad quality though...To the point where you're better off just getting 3rd party software to emulate actual high quality versions of the mount music pre-Stormblood if that's what you're really looking for (against TOS obviously)

I wish they made the Chonkobbo the fastest mount in the game when you switch from lettuce to cake, the visual of someone being on a godly looking dragon mount being passed by someone riding this absolute UNIT would be amazing.
I am very sad and disappointed that Asmongold didn't see the Giant Mecha Dragon Mount (Landerwaffe), or the Lunar Whale 8-Seater Mount.
When Zepla made that video, those mounts were not on the game yet :) But I'm sure that there are FFXIV players who like Asmon, have mounts and will show them to him :)

@53:00 The 56-man raid was tough in its own time. The 56 count is the result of the raid having 48 players initially, 6 full groups of 8, and one segment where each of the 6 groups split apart to trigger switches, while a 7th group of 8 outside does some overworld content, and then joins the 48 inside to progress on the 3rd and then final bosses.
My personal headcannon is, that if a mount can't inherently fly, it's actually the WoL's power that actually makes it fly, lol

@@cyrielroelofs FFXIV isn't garbage. It's actually pretty fun. I would highly suggest trying it out, if you haven't already played it yet. Starts off pretty slow, but once you reach Heavensward, it gets so much better from there.

How do the mounts fly?
There is something in the game called Aether currents. When you attune to all of them in a map you are able to fly in that region. The mounts literally flow with the currents. A pretty decent explanation for something that facilitates our lives a lot.

I want to also mention that most of the Store Mounts were free mounts from Events. If you grab it from the event, you won't have to buy it from the store down the line when it gets there. Not all of them gets put on the store at some point, though. Some stay exclusive forever and you can't get them anymore, IIRC. Like the FF15 Crossover Event one.

A good many of those mounts are from past Final Fantasy games or crossovers with other properties. FFXIV is definitely a sort of FF all-stars.
Also fun fact about the Behemoth, he's so big and strong that for him to fly, he pushes the entire world down and away so that he's just falling.

@Deron Harper The interactive minions that you can have sit on your shoulder with the /beckon command blew my mind, that and the fact that cat and dog minions will fight.
@Deron Harper You can't "force" it per-se. Minions have different personality types, and the only ones who will always listen if you beckon them are the "Obedient" type. There are a LOT of minions (including Midgardsormr) that have the "Independent" type, which means they basically do whatever they want, and that includes listening when you beckon them trying to make them sit on your shoulder.
@Deron Harper That's fair, I personally don't use minions because I click on stuff to target sometimes when Tab targeting decides it hates me and doesn't want to switch to the right target (and I play Tank, so that's important, me not switching targets could very easily mean someone dying sometimes), and because you can target minions, they get in the way sometimes. In instances they aren't a problem, but it's super noticeable when you're trying to go to the market or something and there's like 30 people all with minions out standing around the market, and it's impossible to target it because of it
The horse mounts at 23:00 that he's insulting is the thing I remember about the game the most. Me and like 7 other people spent 2 whole days playing so that we all got all the elemental horses. They might look stupid but that's my favorite thing I've done in game so far.

For anyone curious, the reason for setting the raid to 56 is because FF14 uses 4-person groups, and 14 of them equals 56 players.
You gotta realize not everyone is into that super manly stuff, a lot of girls play FF14 so of course there’s gonna be some cute mounts.

The motorcycle store mount has a useful property: it will travel at maximum speed in every zone, regardless if you haven’t unlocked faster mount speed for the zone you’re traveling in.
Very useful for places like Bozjan Southern Front (zone is non-flyable with dense amt. of mobs that chase you across half the mob before resetting).

There's loads of mounts that make sense in WoW in how they fly.
They fly with suspension of disbelief. But yes the elephant mount looks dumb in the air. It was a bit of a disappointment.

The mounts in FFXIV were different at start, some could fly, some not. Some of the mounts you see in this video couldnt fly from the start, mounts like the couerl or the behemoth were unable to fly. But people started to complain that after with HW the game got flying some mounts would not fly, so being useless. So SE did the minimal rework to make them flying mounts, they added a flying movement which looks a bit different as the walking one but they did not invested much time to make it plausible why the mounts actually fly, or how they do it, it just was not neccessary because people just wanted flying mounts, but you cant give every mount additional visible effect/ items to make it realistic why they can fly. So with this change the resoning for mounts got lost and from that point on everything could just fly trough magic like a magic carpet. So if you see a flying mount you think it cannot fly just imagine it has the same magic as a flying carpet or has pieces of an magical carpet glued on its feet. XD

There is definately amusement in watching someone who knows nothing about Final Fantasy react to all these mounts. Some of them are absolutely ridiculous but that's the point really. XD
As for the flying thing, I recommend reading the mount descriptions when you get them. They do write little blurbs about why/how they can fly and some of them are pretty far and ridiculous stretches. The Dhalmel (the big giraffe) mount is one of my favorite: "While attempting to nibble at a tree on a nearby isle, this dhalmel lost its footing and fell. As it plunged towards certain death, the fervent desire to live awakened its latent ability to harness the wind, and thus did it soar to safety. This may or may not have happened, but let's say it did."
They are completely aware of how silly they're being and I love it. XD

Getting a token from failed attempts to buy mounts is one of the best things ever IMO
It's a nice way to motivate people to grind for the mount, simply because you know if you don't get the drop in a certain number of runs you can just buy the mount anyway.
I also think it's nice that they put something like that in rather than going 'oh you have bad luck?? well tough shit no mount for you'
I love the response to most flying mounts is “MAGIC”. The whale actually has a logical explanation. They are able to fill up with gas and fly. At least that’s the lore I hard.
The vast majority work given lore context, yes.
The chairs and beds and the Namazu one are made of a lighter-than-air substance, for example.
Some do fly just 'cause, but that's handwaveable.
Well to be more precise, it’s that all sea creatures in the game have a secondary gravitational bladder that allows them to float and by extension, fly once HW became a thing.

And are some of the toughest people in game.
They have an innate resistance to poison because of how many have poisoned each other historically.

Making all mounts fly allows players to actually use them. Look at all these non-flying mounts in wow that nobody ever uses. For instance this tree mount that looks really cool but does not fly: it is useless for most people…
Idk if they mention this. But each mount usually has its own Music 🎶. So when u mount it the Music changes to that specific mounts
Mounts also have theme songs that play while ridin' them.
some of them. Mostly just the raid mounts. Most mounts just play the default music.
As someone who has most of the mounts in the game, this was very entertaining to see asmons reaction to them. I'd ike him to see some of the mounts added after that video was published (5.25 - 5.55) Especially the Dwarf Tank.
Edit. I would also Like to see him react to all the Relics and and ultimate weapons in the game.

I really wanted him to see the 8 man whale mount. He thinks the first whale is for whales, they made a super whale mount for the super whales. Asmon I think is the one who really got me into mount collecting, and I think I do pretty well for myself. But it makes me super sad to see so many unobtainable mounts. 1.0 flex mounts? Sure ok that's fair. But making almost all the pvp mounts timed exclusives? No wonder nobody plays pvp. You tell me that not only can I not get the cool mounts that were added in previous seasons but I might not even get the current mount?
@@MajorSquiggles The pvp stuff is the same in most games. They're trying to make it a flex. A lot of the seasonal mounts that are unavailable were easy to get during their time periods. Ranked PvP top 100 is a grind that needs some sort of reward as incentive. People do play pvp, the combat just isn't built for it. I want a lot of the pvp glam and so I need to farm it.
@@gabysoto2566 Being in other games doesn't make it valid. It's bad there too. You should be rewarded for accomplishing difficult tasks sure but this requires you happen to be playing at the correct time. 1.0 was a very unique case and has to do more with backing a failed game and giving players something in exchange for removing the entire game they paid for. No other mounts in the game work that way. Should trial mounts be removed after new patches? What about raid mounts? Seasonal mounts are at the very least put on the mog station. FFXIV is usually very good at avoiding fomo. Yoshi has made it clear that he would rather people stop playing and come back later when new content is out. This just artificially forces people who want the mounts to stay and grind content they don't like because if they don't they literally can never get it.
i know a lot of old ass nerds will hate this, but i really wish Blizzard would just make every mount a flying mount like FFXIV does. i believe Square Enix made this decision because they knew the mounts that couldnt fly just would never be used over a mount that could. make it a part of the lore or something if you have to.
Well you can literally fly everywhere you can use a mount in XIV, so it doesn't make sense to use any ground mounts whatsoever considering that flying is faster.
It just makes sure that if someone has a favourite mount, they're not kept from being able to use it because it can't fly, and that's an awesome thing.
I get what Asmon says about "how tf does it fly" but it just means that everyone can use the mounts they want to.
For that comment on the amaro mount, I would sincerely like to see him get all the way to 5.3

When you start the game take some time to familiarize yourself with the HUD customization. Opening the main menu (ESC on keyboard or start on controllers) and selecting "HUD Layout" will bring up the HUD customization screen. You can drag literally everything on your HUD to wherever you want it. The confusing part is additional hotbars, where you have to select a hotbar from the dropdown menu in the window that pops up on the HUD Layout screen, hit the little gear settings icon, then check a box to make it usable. You can even change the opacity of the boxes.
I only use 6 hotbars, 2 for my core rotations / low CD abilities, 2 for non-combat related abilities like summoning a mount / teleporting / returning to home / etc, and 2 for changing jobs / classes (you can switch between any class/job you unlocked after lvl 15 and after unlocking them).

A lot of the "STORE" mounts were actually FREE IN-GAME REWARDS for past Events.
They just added them to the store the next year of the same event so people that missed out still have a way to get them.
