    In the novelization of this movie, the crazies were crazy because of nerve gas used by the Soviet Union during WWIII when they attacked New York. After three weeks the city became uninhabitable. The survivors hid underground and became that way. Also, Bob Hauk’s son was a prisoner in there and that’s why he became warden, to look for him.

    ANOTHER FUN FACT: The Crazy that Snake shoots and kills through the blocked window at 1:32 - 1:34 is (according to the 1981 movie novelization by Mike McQuay) suppose to be the long-lost son of Police Commissioner, Bob Hauk (Lee Van Cleef). That's the "other deal" that Hauk is referring to at the end of EFNY when he and Snake are making final small-talk - the finding and extracting of the son out of the prison. Sadly though, the mission, had it been carried out, would've been a complete exercise in futility since, unbeknownst to Hauk, his son was already dead, and, unbeknownst to Snake, he was the one who inadvertently pulled the trigger on him thinking he was just another blood-thirsty New York Crazy.

      In hindsight, he didn't know how thick the wall was. Plus, Mythbusters shown this sort of thing is Hollywood magic.....well. Shooting a big round hole in the floor with twin full-auto Beretta's and expecting to fall through.
      In reality, there would be a stud in the wall, electrical wiring/plumbing pipes, and TWO sheets of drywall - one on each side.
      In retrospect, I'm surprised Snake wasn't equipped with a flashlight (or a weapon-mounted light/flashlight mounted to the suppressor shroud). They already mounted a rifle scope to the suppressor shroud; it wouldn't take much more effort to do likewise to a mini- flashlight.

      I don't know if you have already, but I would totally recommend getting ahold of the Escape from New York novelisation. It fleshes out the crazies and where they came from. Pretty cool. But then, and I think John Carpenter was masterful to do this, the fact that we know so little about them (let alone see so little of them in terms of screen time and lighting) makes them all the more terrifying.

    I can't believe it. The scene where the crazies grab Season Hubley. I guess, if you are crazies material, you become a crazy yourself. Otherwise, they eat you. An overlooked subtlety in this film is that Cabbie (Ernest Borgnine, he of the stainless steel smile) was not a prisoner. Rather, he was so habituated to New York and his role as a cabbie that he simply stayed behind when the island was converted to a prison. I think, also, that Duke of New York (Issac Hayes) did not really run the place, but rather was allowed his pretensions and petty power by the people who did, probably real gangsters who were doing life. As dystopian as the story was, it wasn't dystopian enough. Those imprisoned there who had real power could have spread their tentacles around enough to have whom they wanted sent there. More women. Or the necessary servile types. The ones we saw were the ones on the periphery. The Duke and his followers. The crazies. The free lance survivors.
    My idea about science fiction is that it can only be about the time in which it was created. Escape from New York has a lot to say about American urban society in the dissipated, brutal era of the 1970's and early 1980's.
    What weighs on me is how long ago this was. Borgnine is dead. Hayes is. Kurt Russell is a senior citizen. The good news is, Season Hubley is only three years younger than I am. Does that mean I still have a chance? Yes, it means I have a chance!

    • @SeanP7195
      @SeanP7195 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Looking back, the US, especially NYC was an awful and brutal place starting in the late 60s thru the late 80s. Without getting too political Guilani doesn't get enough credit. To hear the citizens cry about "stop and frisk" was heartbreaking. They seem to have short memories. Again, not to get too political Donald Trump invested much into NYC during this time betting it would come back. He bet correctly. Many businesses left the city during this time. Not enough research or discussion has been done about to be honest. I think its an avoided topic because some of the causes will offend people.

    • @jrcasselman
      @jrcasselman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Your comment about Cabbie is dead-on. However, the part about the crazies is misleading. The subways in New York require constant pumping in order to prevent the Hudson River from flooding in; after the city was converted into a prison,the subways would have been flooded almost instantly.
      I think that the NLFA had sent in operatives, in the form of criminals, into the prison long before the planned hijacking, to inform the prison population about what to expect. That is the only way the prisoners could have gotten to the President so soon.

    • @SidneyBroadshead
      @SidneyBroadshead 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The entire city of New York was converted into a prison and everyone - criminals and citizens alike - were locked in. Cabbie must have a deal with Brain or The Duke to have enough gas and spares to run his cab.
      The Duke was a major player because he had access to gasoline and cars thanks to Brain. There really isn't a "duke" of New York City because it's too big. However, The Duke is the guy you have to deal with if you want to do anything. He is powerful because a) they believe he has power, b) he has demonstrated his power over others using credible threats, and c) because he has control of goods and services in the prison. His acquisition of the President gives him prestige over other gang leaders because it makes him the dealmaker.
      He doesn't seem to have enough power to eradicate the cannibal Crazies in the sewers or directly control gangs like the "Indian"-theme gang that crashes Snake's glider.

    • @anonymike8280
      @anonymike8280 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Potwheelz No, it's an inference. There is a lot that was not shown, presuming you accept the premise. There had to be some mafiosi in there. They're not going mope, they're going to do business as usual. You don't know much, do you?
      But, hey, it was just a movie. Grad some popcorn and have a good time. I suggest "Red Dawn" as the other half of the double feature.

    He has a full Auto Mac 10 submachine gun and he had spare mags.....I think he would have just waited in the dark alley and mowed them all down?

    • @SteinerArts
      @SteinerArts 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wanna have a conversation about it? He was given three mags in the beginning and fired one already (hand scene and wall breakthrough), so there are only two mags left. Maybe if he switched to semi he could have gotten some, but firing in the dark with only one intact eye? That's crazy.

      On top of that, if I remember correctly, the scene before he takes refuge in the coffee shop (I guess that's what it is) shows almost hundreds of these people roaming all throughout the streets.
      I'm fairly sure the longer he stayed in one place the more overwhelmed he would've been as it's not very hard to believe that the rest of the crazies could pinpoint where all the commotion is coming from.

    Using a gun to create a "hole" in the wall to jump through is a cool idea but I really wish they executed it here better 1:37 I mean, Snake is basically just jumping through paper here. He didn't need to waste the bullets.

      For which reasons? The president in this movie is based on Thatcherism/Reagonomics. Carpenter is also openly anti authoritarian. The world Escape From New York depicts is American right wing dystopia at its finest.

    • @no-barknoonan1335
      @no-barknoonan1335 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You must not know many SJW's, what you call an SJW is what in this film is represented by the punks living in New York. Carpenter even said his inspiration was seeing the conflict between left wingers and right wingers balloon into this dystopian future. The right wingers went full fascist and run the government as Nazis would, the left wingers went full activist and became terrorists and criminals. You might be surprised but most SJW's do like this movie. I am not one but I know many due to where I live geographically and they love watching all Carpenter films, but especially this one and they live.
