The brilliance of Sellers performance is that despite he’s a walking disaster he never loses his own sense of huge self-importance and belief he’s a great detective.
To be fair, aside from 3 different broken pieces of equipment, he still got the lead he needed and was right about the wax as Col Sharkey pointed out. Thinking it was Charles and not Simone is really not his fault, but more a credit to her deception.
@@cyanimation1605think your taking it a bit too seriously, it’s a comedy.
HAHAHAHA! Yes!
And he is.
I work with a few people like that...
Just that first scene where he walks straight ahead gets me to the floor every time. He was a genius.
That scene is all i need and i am done 😂
Love the opening 4 seconds with him walking the completely wrong direction
Gets me on the floor everytimw
I love how Peter Sellers can just make any sort of slapstick like it was done accidentally and in one take
How do you know the scene was done in one take, were you there during the filming?
@@nimueh4298 Freddy was saying that Peter Sellars made it LOOK LIKE it was done on the first take (even if it wasn't), because of his great talent of always looking spontaneous. That was the WHOLE POINT of his comment
3:31 This never fails to make me laugh - never. The 'boing' sound effect, the askew hat and the fact that not one person in the room reacts. Fantastic.
Same with me - and it sent my father into hysterics back in the day. The gag was inspired by the James Finlayson version in Laurel & Hardy in The Hoosegow - when carrying out the inspection and he trips and catches his top hat at the same time on the overhead wire - my father would cry with laughter every time he saw it!
Same. As a kid it would send my Dad and I into hysterics, too. I would rewind it a couple of times to see it again and my Dad actually didn't mind at all. 😅
Everytime i cry laughing
“This is where you are wrong, Wax is not just wax.” Best line in the movie.
Others have tried, but nobody but Peter Sellers will ever be Jacques Clouseau.
Or Herbert Lom as Chief inspector Dreyfus.
@@keithallver2450 Aye.
I agree 👍 to both wholeheartedly 🙏 they will never be equaled.
So True.
@@keithallver2450Absolutely, The opening scene of 'Strikes Again at the lake of the mental institute is absolutely brilliant
I love how, whenever he even comes remotely close to demonstrating competent detective skills, he suddenly causes thousands of pounds worth of damage.
Derek Smallshorts That's what made these movies so good. You never knew what was going to happen next.
What's a pound?
suzycreamcheesez That's how citizens of the United Kingdom call their paper money.
In other words a one pound note equals one US dollar.
mahalo I know I mean how much is a pound worth American?
Clouseau was always a disaster about to happen, then crash, bam, boom!
BTW, the pound to U.S. dollar equivalency is so easy to Google. You could easily find out for yourself. It took me 15 seconds.
Saw this in the theater during its original run. There was a pretty good amount of laughter when Clouseau goes in the wrong direction, building through the other screw-ups -- at times it became hard to hear Sellers' voice over people giggling and gasping to each other -- until the huge metal disk crashes down onto the statue, when there was gigantic laughter and applause.
i thought this was a movie
Oh I would have loved to be there! It sounds like quite an event
Absolute genius and by far the best movie in the series. I don't know how many times I watched this film as a kid. At least one hundred times.
+Johnny Organ For me, The Pink Panther Strikes Again just about edges out Return of the Pink Panther...but you can't lose with either film! As you say, it's absolute genius. Too funny. I wish I could get my stepson to watch these old gems with me someday but our sense of humor is different
Well.. I take it that you now work as a detective?
Both Strikes again, and Shot in the Dark are better I think, but this is probably the only other great one.
@@heavenhelp1982 Nah, Return... is far more consistent and works because it's more grounded. Strikes Again goes a bit too crazy towards the end.
My friends and I used to watch this as kids all of the time, too. We rewatched that last scene with Kato more times than I can count. 😂
If he were locked in a padded cell out in the middle of nowhere, Clouseau would accidentally destroy it, by blowing it up or something, and somehow walk away completely unharmed.
One the funniest lines in any movie. "Of course I'm alright. I'm examining the wax "
Wax is wax
“so we meet again”
this is my favourite Clouseau scene of all
priceless! Mr Sellers is a legend.
Brilliant! Even after all this time I still have an outrageous laugh. Great actor and script thanks
Untouchable classic.
"Of course, I'm exzamining ze wax"
😂
That karate chop 😂
He was the inspiration behind the detective work in the OJ SIMPSON TRIAL.
haha that's a good one. I lived in Los Angeles at that time and even saw OJ's bronco drive by from one of the 405 over passes.
His calling card. The glove.
The detective work was great, the prosecuting attorneys f**k the dog on that one!
@@u.v.s.5583 race card
Love it
After seeing the bloopers, you can see this take they were still holding back laughs and smiles, especially before and after the door slides down and back up.
Therefore, the wax!
The wax? Ahhhhhh!
My friend and I fell all over the place the first time we saw this scene.
Lol Wax is wax
"Very ingenious!"
"He pulled himself across the floor."
"He did?"
R.I.P. Peter Sellers
I agree
why can't they make things like this anymore. I watch this as a child god knows how many times that even i knew what is coming i still laugh so hard. Peter Sellers was a perfectionist
They don't have the talent anymore.
It is of a time and place that has passed unfortunately. The nice thing is that we can still watch and appreciate it now so easily and that it is still appreciated by multiple generations. Peter Sellers was also one of a kind.
Political correctness means that we can’t say anything that might offend someone else.
It has totally destroyed, satire and the movie industry.
complete gut buster even after 40 years or more. Laughed so hard at this as a teen ager when it first came out and we saw it at the theater.
The role was made for Peter Sellers.
You know he was inspired by a box of safety matches for the look of Inspector Clouseau
The role was intended for Peter Ustinov
There would be no 80's Chevy Chase without this brilliant man.
True.
Closest influenced many characters e.g french inspector Crabtree from ello ello, Austin powers, mr bean etc
@@domster091 thanks - actually haven't seen allo allo, will check it out
I won't hold that against him.
I don't think Chevy Chase comes close to Peter Sellers, his technique is pretty sloppy and he tends to let the audience know he thinks he's funny too, his attitude is often "oh wow isn't me so clumsy? Isn't me so dumb?" like he's mocking the character alongside the audience
When Peter Sellers does his slapstick, his characters tend to think "oh I am massively screwing this" and "I have to act professional/like I belong". Clousseau here is a detective first, and the butt of slapstick second. To me, someone with a disability that basically makes me be clumsy just like him, Sellers characters are the perfect balance between relatable and funny. I laugh because the stuff he does could very well happen to me, and I would probably react with the same attitude, and I have also seen other people react in quite the same way when they make a screw up.
So like, Sellers wins. He's up there with Buster Keaton.
“Yes very effective, very effective indeed .. the element of surprise “ 😂😂😂
Thankyou! Peter Sellers never fails to crack me up and after the rotten day I’ve had he was just what I needed.
Closeau continues walking straight ahead always cracks me up.
A crime that they tried to imitate him in the movies after his passing. The rule being never fiddle with perfection.
Why can’t most detectives be as brilliant as Clouseau? No wonder our world is in such messes!
Christopher Plummer absolutely relished getting to play Sir Charles "Phantom the Litton" in this one...(David Niven wasn't available)...
who wouldn't, with Catherine Schell as Lady Litton..
RIP, C.P.
Give me 10 men like clouseau and I could rule the world.
PinkPantherClips your a genius and thanks so much for your hard work showcasing the genius of Sellers as Clouseau.
The best photographed entry of the the series. Geoffrey Unsworth's cinematography is epic!
Oh my goodness. I like it when he fells down on the floor with the wax on the floor. And I like it when he pulls the string at the wall and the thing broke the statue off the wall. Very funny!
class , pure class
if you feeling down watch this. increeedeebel.
OMG this guy is so hilarious. I love how he just plays it off...
In that video I love when he pull that string down.”just wow this guy”.I still can’t believe that he is the world greatest dective in the world
Even guardsman on the right can barely keep his face straight.

I saw "Return Of The Pink Panther" at the cinema a few times back in the spring of 1975 and laughed myself silly each time in the same spots...what was funny then is just as funny now......
"Euf ceurse ai new it wos geuing tu heppn all ze taim" xD
Saludos
The timing is impeccable. Pure genius!
“Today, paradise in the Swiss alps; tomorrow, a wasteland. Compared to Clouseau, Attila the Hun was a Red Cross volunteer!” - Chief Inspector Dreyfus
the man was intuitive, Comedic while on his feet, sizes up a situational, the possibility and acting on upon it. in short, he was funny / fun to watch, entertainment with out force,.
Clean, not ugly, no insulting. good stuff. always a joy to see him in action.
The Lord Bless him.
Thank you Squire for referencing this masterpiece!

He is Sir Charles Phantom, the notorious Litton.
I kinda wish he would have talked like this in all the movies, he acts really smart here :P without being it lol
Everything I know about movie comedy started with this film and this scene in particular. I saw it at an impressionable age and it imprinted. All other films (in my mind) are compared to this to see how funny they are. It helped shape my erudition and intellect. See the power of film?
Clouseau: It is my guess that you will find it is English wax.
General: Why?
Clouseau: Because your thief is an Englishman.
Detective: And how do you know that?
Clouseau: It is my business to know that.

I've seen this movie many times and dayum that last part got me! XD
Is the insanely loud music introduction intended to dissuade visitors? The audio needs normalization.
even the outtakes of this movie was so funny
The awkward handshakes and walking ahead gets me every time
This guy was a genius. Timeless comedy.
I just love Clouseau's innocence, I adore him!💚💎
“Very ingenious
That is where you are wrong.
It is my business to know that.
I will root him out. “
Even when he says simple little lines, they are hilarious.
Is one of the best clasick comedy ever.
Priceless LOL. I remember when it first came out I almost choked and Never forgot it. some movies you just can't forget :) this is one of them👍👍👍
One of the translations of the last phrase is much better: "waits until the case becomes quiet" and then BOOM :D
so clumsy and so sweet!!!
The only thing he was right about was the wax XD
Dont you worry Kim, France's best is on the case!
Hehehe. I remember that.
So that's where inspector gadget got his wardrobe style
Guy was a Genius ! Dr. Strangelove , was a good character too . “ I can Walk ! It’s over then
Blake Edwards doesn't rate high in some critic's opinion but he made some doozies. Days of Wine and Roses was outstanding.
The Inspector goes with the flow (bubbling accidents)!
Still hilarious after all these years!!
Peter Sellers WAS THE ONLY Inspector. And when he died, so did he.
The word "genius" doesn't do justice in describing Peter Sellers, acting like Clouseau.. he is natural..
I just got it---what a interesting museum have ...brilliant
An absolute classic movie!
Thiz ah cahling cahd. * Clears throat* lol
Steel claw to the BALLS!!! YeeeEEEEeeeeOOOoooW!!! :) LOL
my fave is the reaction of he people watching it...they all wince
