      I had one like this, the torque could break your wrist, and that is not an exaggeration. You were lucky to have one with variable speed, and even luckier if it still worked and wasn't just on or off.
      Also, I hope he replaced the emi suppression cap. The noise these can back feed onto your power can make things in your house malfunction.

      The modern drill is a marvel of engineering, only flaw is the use of shitty components in some parts to make them not repairable and prone to fail after a couple years
      But the possibilities are great, brushless, variable speeds, amazing battery life, hand tightening of the bit, lightweight and secure
      This one is really primitive compared to modern drills, only perk is the all metal conception which will last for such a long time, but all the other fonctionnalities are years behind anything made today

      Hey Basil, suppose it depends on your definition of old. I was selling Hitachi tools 20years ago and this machine was long off the market before that. They are actually nigh on indestructible and although they lack many of the modern features we now love on our tools, they were quality tools and made to last. Nice to see someone give this thing the care it deserves. If it was a car you would call it a classic.

      Instructions are for people who prefer to have the same number of fingers on each hand, and eventually a pair of eyes... :D
      Of course - you can always do with only a pair of balls, if you don't need your other appendages :D
      Dude, seriously - those are simple tools, and yeah, you're not so wrong. But start working with some big ass machinery like factory robots and stuff - those instructions are more important than your life insurance and your will! Once you see someone's fingers twitching on the ground detached from their hand - you'll know what i'm talking about! I hope you never have to...

    I had a massive, vintage 1/2" Craftsman electric drill that I got from a yard sale and kept it for many years until I realized that it had mainly sentimental value.
    Because a modern hammer-drill facility is essential for drilling concrete. However, it is nice to see how some people have the skill to restore products to
    pristine conditions. I myself have been a book restorer.

    • @MrHBSoftware
      @MrHBSoftware 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      if you hit them in the part you are pressing (with a appropriate size tube or socket) it doesnt matter, but if you hit them on the opposite part you can damage them because they dont take side loads very well... (hope i made sense, i am noty native english speaker)

    • @martin_11

      @@MrHBSoftware I know what you mean and it is true

    • @logic0905
      @logic0905 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrHBSoftware No, this is important. When you hit a bearing, there is a big force for a short time. This force can destroy the bearing seat. When you press it, there is no such problem. If you hammer the bearing as he does, then it breaks the hole for the bearing and destroys the bearing as a whole. Because effort is transmitted through balls.

    • @MrHBSoftware
      @MrHBSoftware 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@logic0905 i understand what you are explaining but just dont hit the whole bearing, only hit it with the hammer on either the outer seat, if you are fitting the bearing itself or hit only the inner seat ,if you are installing a shaft in the bearing hole...., bearings are made of hardened steel and na shatter if you hit them too hard but that only happens in very extreme cases of heavy beating....
      you can also damage a bering by pressing it as a whole or aplying pressure on the wrong side, just like with the hammer...when i press bearings in i always use a suitable sized tube and press only on the side i am installing.
      you can use an appropriate size tube or bearing press kit but most people use sockets from their socket set...
      only tapered bearings take side loads well, ball bearings are not designed for side loading

As a kid, no one in out family ever needed a TV or stereo etc. in fact he had V's and stereos and etc. all over his house.lol

      Haaaa...haaaa...you never lived in the 1950's. "Made in Japan" at that time meant cheap and poor quality. It wasn't until W. Edwards Deming started working with the Japanese after WWII as part of the Marshall Plan to rebuild Japan that Japanese manufacturing started to advance in quality. Deming was so revered in Japan that In 1960, he received the Second Order Medal of the Sacred Treasure from the Emperor of Japan for improvement of quality and the Japanese economy

Knowledge on what kind of tools or chemicals or different type of sandpapers to clean or achieve waterproof effect on certain parts. All these take years to accumulate and hard to find an all-rounder in these fields.

      Used the same as original, Don't think it would meet current requirements, but 2 prongs on metal tools was standard back in the day. Also, in the US, the neutral and ground are (connection wise) the same thing on single phase. The difference is that the ground is designed not to actually carry current, but rather only to be used for safety. Assuming the path through the neutral is not broken, it is equally as safe as with a third prong. It's only when the path through your body to ground has less resistance that there is a problem.

    good old days. It's Hitachi's electric drill, NU-DH3. My grandfather uses the same model and it remains in my house as a relic.
    I haven't used it much because it's big and heavy, but after watching the video, I decided to maintain it for the first time in a while. Thank you very much.
    In addition, hitachi 999-006 is suitable for carbon brushes. The Japanese manual instructs you to replace the brush when the remaining amount of the brush is 5 mm or less.

    • @kes7774
      @kes7774 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      懐かしい。日立の電動ドリル、NU-DH3ですね。祖父が同じ機種を使っていて、私の家にも遺品として残っています。
      大きくて重たいため、あまり使っていないのですが、動画をみて久しぶりに整備してみようと思いました。ありがとうございました。
      なお、カーボンブラシは旧日立工機 999-006が適合します。日本語の説明書では、ブラシ残量が5mm以下になったら交換するように指示されています。

      2:00 Interesting facts related to the construction of the NU-DH3 gear cover.
      th-cam.com/video/0FRY3hqbiPM/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/MdapFxYXf10/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/si1BB6mxKiA/w-d-xo.html
      This is a video of a Japanese electrician disassembling NU-DH4, the successor model to NU-DH3.
      Since the NU-DH4 has a structure that allows the auxiliary handle to be attached to the left side of the gear cover, the placement of the reducer gear on the drill chuck is reversed. In DH3 the reducer gear is on the left side of the drill chuck, but in DH4 the reducer gear moves to the right side of the drill chuck. In addition, the DH4 has a large reinforcement on the side handle mounting part of the gear cover.
      Therefore, even if you modify the DH3 and try to attach the side handle, you can see that it can only be attached to the right side of the gear cover. If you are left-handed, there is no problem, but if you are right-handed, there is an operational problem....
