Even with all these videos of journalists capturing what’s going on people are yet to do anything about it and what’s worse is that all major automotive companies are going into the EV production due to stricter regulations meaning all of the death, corruption and pollution was meaningless.
It’s actually insane how the shipping and oil companies just decide they “don’t want to” pay the ransom for their employees. The people that rule our world are truly evil
Damn he really kept interviewing the pirate so calmly after he said, “Our favorite hostages are people like you, white american or french.” 😮 my jaw dropped
I agree but we should all know it was played up a bit for film. He probably payed them wayy too much money and told them to be scary. The pirates would never trust anyone like that to go into their own home and record them. So there was some type of relationship there with trust and money. If he didn't pay them an extremely large amount then he would have been kidnapped
@Lucas Maclean Because Mayo skins such as yourself, are not exploited; in a way many of you are, but by your own people higher on the food chain, like everyone else
"you came exploiting our country but you dont want to employ our people" I feel you man, there are many western oil & gold industries in my country, but the area where the company is located is actually the poorest area in my country. I found the second leader he interviewed particularly interesting. The way he was so cautious and so aggressive but at the same time was still very obviously quite curious and seemed like he wanted to talk. I wasn’t surprised when he managed to organise a second meeting. Something that I did find quite amazing though is how much the leader seemed to calm down and show what I think to be more his real self rather than the person he is “at work” after he was eventually sat down opposite the ‘journalist’ and had answered a few questions. He seemed to loosen up completely when he started talking almost like he wanted to, I believe that is why I got the feeling he wanted to talk the first time they arranged a meeting but he let his cautiousness and paranoia get the better of him
Meeting these guys is just like attempting to befriend a viscious dog ...put your hand out in a gentle gesture and it will either be ripped to bits or just sniffed with a snarl .
In a life that violent, cautiousness is how you survive. It's not paranoia. I think he *did* want to talk to the journalist and get his message out. These folks seem like they ended up as pirates out of desperation and anger.. and they have reason for both.. Big oil companies would probably be more than happy to make people like him disappear on the down low.. I bet some of the folks who would facilitate the disappearing might for example pose as journalists.. They live with violence every day. I'm surprised he was willing to answer questions at all..
I’ve been to Armenia many times, there are a lot of people who are dirt poor, living in small shacks, and yet they would welcome a stranger into their home and would never dare to steal, kidnap, or kill anyone. Poverty is not an excuse for such behavior.
This really puts in perspective this whole situation. So rarely do we see someone on the ground, reporting, interviewing, giving an unbiased view of the events unfolding as they happen. The pirates, the soldiers, the families, the bystanders, everyone. No agenda, no angle, we just get a glimpse into this world in such a rare manner for reporting these days. If only all news media was like this.
Also shows you firsthand why people commit crimes. They're not "evil" they just do what they can to survive. They didn't want to be homeless bums and they found piracy incredibly successful

According to the documentary, the oil companies spent about 15% of their resources to provide security monthly. Can you imagine the impact such amount can create in the lives of the people. Western countries should stop our leaders from investing stolen wealth in their countries, with that, they will find no reason to steal so much.
straight to the point, these big oil companies are greedy, 15% which he equated to $1million per month, how much does it cost to give back to the community in form of medical, education and employment opportunities, they blame the government of corruption but in essence, they are to blame for a far much worse sin of pollution that has far more reaching consequences of destroying the livelihood of the local population forever.
There is still a reason to steal, because of the amount of profit they can get out of it. If they can already get away with stealing there would be no reason to stop.
Everyone would have to completly stop buying gas, oil, kerosene, diesel fuel, plastics, petroleum based products and that would be the end of the need for oil then the politicians would start loosing money followed by the oil company investors and it would keep trickling down, average people could make a huge impact but we've become to dependent on these things for our daily lives so that won't ever happen it'll just get worse in time

Point of correction, these guys are no pirate they re just fighting for what belongs to them.. living in poverty and desperation while the country's source of wealth is being take form the land.
It doesn't belong to them personally but it does belong to the country. I think the blame needs to go to the corrupt officials who let the oil companies rape the resources of the land and pocket what is rightfully the people's.
Oil companies in Nigeria wouldn't have to invest so much in security only if they did the right thing. Expatriates wouldn't be at threats if their companies did the right thing. They're obviously taking the resources of the people, from their land, making huge profits from it and giving them nothing in return, no employment, electricity, road, water, health care, food and so on, total frustration! How do you expect the people to live and survive? All these abductions, killings, kidnapping and threats to life wouldn't be existing only if our government do what's right, but no, they always do what's wrong, choose to make the people suffer, then invest in security to protect themselves and families from the monsters they created.
Agree. I think there's a very strong "them vs us" mentality, but in my opinion its all just "us", there is no "them", we're all just humans trying to survive. The way that capitalism functions is on exploitation, and i think in the fear of being vulnerable to that financial insecurity is what causes many people to agree with exploitation. As long as they're on the profitable, livable side, they're perfectly willing to condemn others to poverty. The rise of scamming, scalping, it's all this culmination of people wanting to gain, and not caring about the losses that caused the gain. I hope that we can reach a point where you don't have to earn the right to your basic needs. Poverty breeds futher poverty and the cycle will continue under these societal norms, no matter where you are. @@slawek6302 i mean, starting off it would be smart to hire people who can read write and speak english, but invest into the community you are ruining, like seriously. if these companies would invest into these communities, those people would be able to speak english, read and write better, and be more educated, and you would see a lot more of Africa being safer, but they keep on hiring inside of America, or countries that they aren’t ruining. If the company was gone from there, then this country would be able to capitalize off of their own natural resources, of course this would take many years because they don’t have the same equipment as the country, but eventually this country can do the same thing i was talking about, investing into their people. you are defending these countries, there are such easy fixes but i guess you couldn’t see that. and often times, these countries’s governments are heavily influenced and in a way ran by these big companies, politicians or presidents get the money, and that’s all that they care about, but if the company were to say “we give you this money and keep on giving you money, you make schools so we can hire your people, or we will pay you less.” obviously in more formal matters, but that’s the general basis of it.

Factor in the greed will you?
They're incorporate
There is still a reason to steal, because of the amount of profit they can get out of it. If they can already get away with stealing there would be no reason to stop.
Everyone would have to completly stop buying gas, oil, kerosene, diesel fuel, plastics, petroleum based products and that would be the end of the need for oil then the politicians would start loosing money followed by the oil company investors and it would keep trickling down, average people could make a huge impact but we've become to dependent on these things for our daily lives so that won't ever happen it'll just get worse in time

Very courageous individual. Thank you for providing a straightforward documentary.
Point of correction, these guys are no pirate they re just fighting for what belongs to them.. living in poverty and desperation while the country's source of wealth is being take form the land.
Dennis, you’re right. It’s just neo-colonialism, robbing powerless countries
It doesn't belong to them personally but it does belong to the country. I think the blame needs to go to the corrupt officials who let the oil companies rape the resources of the land and pocket what is rightfully the people's.
Yaaaa
They need to get a true government of the people and nationalize the fields
Right you are Dennis
They would be wise too listen to you
Well this is the realest documentary I have watched, kudos to you Bertrand. You really deserve an award for all those risks.
Gotta be an adrenaline junkie, i know the feeling of invulnerability that can ensue.
Oil companies and loggers are known for their ill treatment of the indigenous populations.
These men shouldn't have to spend money on guns and ammunition while living in these conditions. Even the money they take is spent in large part on the problem the corporations are causing. Their entire lives are dictated by their oppression, and people in the comments think they're in the wrong.

Nah, at least subtitles should have been given, some of those accents are pretty thick and almost unintelligable. What does "speaking for themselves" matter if most people cant understand them?
What I was hoping to hear, particularly in the case of Somalia, what the real cause of piracy was: the industrial exploitation of fish-bearing waters by foreigners who have literally starved the traditional fishing populations. A bit like the discourse in Nigeria where multinationals are making money without including the local population, with the endorsement of the corrupt government. So the bias here is again that of the exploitative foreigners who are surprised by the consequences of their actions, because they remains blind to them. The syndrome of the good white man against the bad black man, in short. Western ex-colonisers know how to continue exploiting countries by corrupting their elites.
