The objective of the DECISION project is to enhance the understanding of the pathophysiology of decompensation of #cirrhosis leading to acute-on-chronic liver failure (#ACLF) or death. This consortium will take advantage of already existing large and clinically well-characterized cohorts to ultimately develop prognostic and response tests and combinatorial therapies tailored to the needs of individual patients to decrease the risk of short-term death.
In this masterclass, DECISION consortium member Prof. Dr. Agustín Albillos Martínez (Department Head Gastroenterology and Hepatology at "Ramón y Cajal" Hospital & Professor of Medicine at the University of Alcalá), provided an overview of the effects of low molecular weight #heparin (#LMWH) in #cirrhosis. In his lecture, he gave a brief refresher on the mode of action of anti-coagulants, followed by the pathophysiological basis for the long-term use of #anticoagulation in cirrhosis as well as the experience with anticoagulants in the clinic.
