2ZZ-GE Vibe GT Inspection, First look UNDER the car and, P0420 Code Persists? Rut Ro!

  • Well we've got a couple hundred miles on our "new" project / daily Pontiac Vibe GT and have a fair understanding of what's good, what's bad, and what still very much needs sorted. Firstly and shing right in our face is the Check Engine light that flat out refuses to stay gone, and this pesky P0420 code! Probably time for a proper inspection eh?
    For a car with a quarter of a million miles, and one that's likely changed hands a few times before us, and clearly with at least a little bit of "questionable" mechanic work (see calking on the roof) we kind of figured there would be one or two pieces that wouldn't be perfect. We certainly found one or two issues.
    This won't be the last you see of the 2003 Pontiac Vibe GT for sure, we've got more plans, for maintenance, more fixing, more upgrades all ahead and there's probably a pretty good chance this car has a Road Trip ahead of it! What do you all think? Did we buy a good one with a few issues? Or buy a time bomb who's fuse is about to burn out?

    Love my Pontiac Vibes. Have a 2004 GT with 199,500 miles, a 2003 with 286,000 miles and a 2005 with 233,000 miles. The GT engine is a blast to drive when lift kicks in and it gets pretty good mileage. It's basically a Toyota Matrix for those not knowing this. I'd check the compression next, it will tell you a lot on how it was maintained. The GT engine is known to be a leaker and the timing chain tensioner O-ring is the most common. There is a Vibe Group on Facebook with over 6,000 members and lots of good info there from drivers and mechanics named GenVibe. I'm going to post this video there as they will enjoy this. I remember the other GT you had on your road trip video up through Michigan. Wear that seat belt buddy, we want you safe and around here for a long time. Looking forward to the next videos. I've been pretty lucky with removing the O2 sensors without them breaking. I'm going to say it's gummed up.

      Just noooo, way too much competition and unscrupulous sellers. Just watch Auto Auction Rebuilds. He’s lucky if he only looses $500 per car. The Ad revenue is what pays the bills. Some cars he does turn a profit $1500 or so

    The rear lower control arms are known to rust out in the middle support.
    Rocker panels under the lower moldings are also known to rust out.

    I have an 04 GT and the ses light was on for 2 years with a p0420 code, every time I'd clear it it'd come back on in about ten minutes. Last month I noticed my coils were OEM Ave they were cracked so I changed them with some cheap aftermarkets from rockauto and my ses light went out and never came back on. Made me glad I never changed the cat.

    That car was definitely serviced by Walmart the last time, they are the only ones in our area(Ohio) that use the blue junk they put on the drain plug.

    • @LucoreAuto
      @LucoreAuto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yamaha DOES design and build some incredible engines however 2 decades of questionable maintenance can certainly lead to some major problems. Keep checking stuff off one issue at a time!

  • @treesleavedents
    @treesleavedents ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I had the same issue in my 03 VGT. Persisted after a new cat and 2 new o2 sensors. What ended up fixing mine was leaving it in storage with no battery long enough to reset the ECU when I got it out. I think the engine needed to relearn the idle and fuel map to compensate for the new cat. At least that's my theory haha. A free thing to try would be resetting the ECU and having the car relearn idle. Good luck!

    • @LucoreAuto
      @LucoreAuto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmmm interesting, certainly not IMPOSSIBLE. This car does seem to have a slightly higher than average idle at least it feels like it is a bit high. Who knows how long this thing was run without a cat so...
      It's worth trying. Down to my last bit of fuel trying out some "snake oil" fixes, if those don't work maybe I'll give that a try! Thanks for the heads up.

    • @treesleavedents
      @treesleavedents ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LucoreAuto I left the US 3 yrs ago and it had a constant p0420. Came back and plugged a battery in, changed nothing else, and it did the whole relearning idle deal and the code never came back. Before I left the US I had changed the stock exhaust to the PPE high flow catted exhaust to try and fix it but it didn't.

    A serious front end collision on the driver's side, rebuilt with junkyard parts. Probably the cat got sold to fund the rebuild. The headlights are not matching pair, all the seams on the driver's side are busted open and rotted, window is cracked and the A-pilar is blown a part meaning the wheel has been deep into it. It's a hooptie all right.

    Do NOT support jegs anymore. The coughlins sold it to some shitty place who's going to turn it into something like rock auto. My best friend worked there for 3 plus years. They fired him for absolutely no reason and the people who run it are scumbags. I used to love going there. But not anymore. He's got the inside scoop too. I go to summit. Two hour drive north is so worth it. Way better selection, way better prices, way better customer service.
    Vibe GTs love to eat clutches as I mentioned on your FB post Austin. Hopefully that's all good for you! I just dealt with what I thought was brakes rubbing on my Odyssey...yeah turns out that the caliper sits very close to the wheel, and some idiot put sticky weights right between the wheel and where the caliper is, and yeah everytime the wheel went around the weights and caliper made contact and it sounded horrible. Didn't notice it until AFTER I did the brakes on the driver's side and took it for a drive. Of course the passenger side was the same. Just took a chisel and knocked them off. So now on the freeway at 60 plus it shakes. I'd love to bring it by to have the front wheels balanced and meet you and just chat!
    Also, you should have bought CataClean...only stuff that works. The crc and the rislone stuff does not work. I've worked for O'Reilly and zone and advance, and customers swore by CataClean and I've used it myself and it worked.n
