What I’m assuming happened is the shop that had it probably re used the oil and might have got dirty so they put a towel over the fill funnel to “ clean “ any debris in the oil and it probably started to break apart and fell into the neck. Since they thought it would just deteriorate they probably left it like that and thought “ eh nothing with happen “..
Given the debris you found in the oil pan, I can understand not wanting to pay for parts until you knew the engine sounded decent. But without the screen, I have to wonder if the oil pump has received additional damage by ingesting from chunks of metal that washed out of the engine and into the oil pan by the now circulating oil.
@@bigdaddymak1439 The engineers apparently thought it was worth installing a screen to keep bigger chunks from reaching the oil pump. My concern is that the debris in the oil pan are what managed to get there with basically no oil flow. With the oil flowing again, I would expect more of those chunks to wash out of other parts the engine and into the oil pan. You are correct that these chunks didn't make it to the oil pump before, but without the screen large chunks could now reach it.
what i dont understand about some of these comments is some dude wrecklessly put a shop towel in the engine and are saying they would never buy a "POS" car. what does this have to do with the car?

He cleaned out the pan the towels blocked the debris. Anything small would get past the screen anyway
