This is cool. I use beer traps all the time and I always seem to have a slug problem. I thought because there were dead slugs in the traps that the traps were working. But look at how many don't get trapped. This explains a lot.
I've used the slug beer trap for years and it's always worked well. Just today, an hour before sunset, I put a tuna fish can half filled with Molson; 4 hours later there were 14 incapacitated slugs. Most of them appeared goners, but a few were still squirming a bit. Perhaps they'd all recover in the morning and slither off to nurse their hangovers?...Nope; I'm pretty sure they've all gone to slug heaven.
I just used yeast (from the store) and mixed with hot water. Put it in traps when it cooled down and it worked just as well as the beer. Much cheaper than using beer.
I've sought out several versions of this--it seems that the most effective had a lip around the inside of the container. Essentially, the slugs had to pass the lip to get down far enough to drink, and then they had the worst time trying to get back up that they fell back in and drowned. Kinda reminds me of a pitcher plant...there are downward facing "hairs" that allow insects to get into the pitcher to drink, but make hard to get back out. Same concept. Wonder if we could take advantage of that, too...
It isn't the alcohol that attracts them. It's the yeast. Sugar water and yeast would do the same. There are commercially designed traps that work better than this, in particular one called "The Slug Well" and another called the "Slug Saloon."
Interesting post - seems the kill ratio is quite low actually - most get away. Hard to deal with slugs when one doesn't have chicken or ducks in the yard... i.e. most suburban neighbourhoods. I have to pick them up after a rain storm when they tend to come out, and throw them down the street drain.
Slugs like real ale. Caught lots but the starlings eat them and fly into the patio doors. Then you got to clean that. Also the slugs arnt dead, they sobber up and climb out the bin
For anyone wondering if this is a waste of time... it's not if you use the right container. I tried a shallow dish submerged partially into the soil around my most afflicted plants, but it hardly helped (and probably attracted a ton more than usual). I picked up these pyramid shaped traps from Amazon, with small holes near the top and a decent length of material down to the wider base. You can put quite a lot of beer in without the level rising too high, and they have to climb down quite a way to get to the beer. My traps are absolutely chock full of the monsters, and only the odd stray one gets to the tastiest plants. It's not even close to being a problem like it was a couple of weeks ago.
@@olelarsen7688 I just saw a vid where the gardener wiped some kind of oil around the inside of the container (a basic plastic cup, the kind you see at parties) with a tissue, and it helps them slide in without being able to climb back out. That might be worth adding to our creations 😅
You really need the cup proud of the ground or you drown beetles . Many beetles are good, for gardeners, as they eat pests and slug eggs. So raise your beer container a couple of centimetres so they don't fall in. The slugs can easily climb the rim.
Thats a lot of slugs having the party of their lives with only a few falling in. It's the same where I live on the coast, there are lots of people visiting getting pissed with only a few who fall into the sea.
I added a very thin coating of WD40 to the inside of the cup, above the bait. They try to get out but slide right back down. Veg oil might also work, haven't tried it yet.
I tried this once but never again. We could not get any sleep as they were up all night singing !!!
phil beer lmao!
Slugs sing?
@@Bfdifan6969
It's a reference to a movie called "Flushed Away"
They were singing the Dropkick Murphys' Shippin off to Boston
Just put kebab meat in another cup, that will calm them down.
the world would be so much worse if slugs actually moved that fast.
As a child, I watched a horror movie about fast snails that attack people.
😂
Was it "slither"? @@madaxe4199
A lot of these guys go back for a second drink! Gettin there drank on
*Happens every time a new watering hole opens up in the neighborhood. Some just don't know their limit.*

I think he needs to grease the sides and not put so much beer in so they streeeeeeeetch down to get the beer.
You give them free beer, of course they come back for more. ;-)
@@SOLtoo exactly and make it deeper so they drop into it and can’t reach the veer then.
It's the same concept as those bag traps for junebugs. You catch 100 but lure 500 more.
Use a lid with a small hole and see what happens. They'll get in but have a hard time finding the way out

Slug heaven does not exist, only slug hell. Hahaha
Slug heaven is full. Gotta go somewhere else

Did ya put flour and sugar aswell?
Yes flour+yeast will work great

Maybe get an empty plastic Hummus tub and cut a circle in the top lid and keep it attached. They’d Struggle to get past that I reckon.
It's weird how they like beer and it's weird how they make them look go fast plus the big black slug went in the cup but never came out LOL XD
He died doing what he loved
He died
I'm glad someone 7 years ago is thinking what I'm thinking. That big black slug never returned 🥲

I like how some of them don't drink enough to get drunk and they escape
It's crazy how many there are. Our front garden is over run with them on the night time.
I attempted to do this in my garden, and ended up drinking the beer 🍻
Vell Harris 👀
... and spitting out the slugs!
This is the best backyard party i have ever seen
Is it just me that does voices for the slugs? "Ooh, what's this? Smells like beer"
"Hmm, I fancy some more of that"
"Oops"

we will call this party slugfest!
This creeped me out but it was still pretty cool!

I use a cut off can on a flat tray. and put beer in the can and some on the tray and sprinkle all with slug poison Ferramol. I never got 100% wipeout

Thanks for that tip.
Looks like some are coming by on a regular basis for a few sips
I feel like zack films is gonna talk about why slugs love beer

Gross, there's about a 100 slugs but only a few got trap.
Normal, there is not enough beer. You need at least 1 inch

Dear god those are big thick slugs imagine them crawling in your room
Put a lid on it with a single hole, they go in but can’t find their way back out so easily.
tin foil
maybe need to make the walls of dish slippery by applying vegetable oil

@@tomrogers951 : would the WD40 smell drive them away?
More like a slug feeding trough. How is it they were able to stay out?
RIP to the one that fell in.
Imagine if slug is that fast
I'm curious about the climate/location - where I am at the slugs only come out at night.
this is night time, they just put a lamp on for filming purposes :)
Right- you can see the sunlight coming up towards the end (watch the clock at top left).
I guess the beer trap doesn't work.
You need to add more beer.
There was a big black one @ 0:45 that went in but never appeared to come back out 😅
Block party. Every slug in the neighborhood is living in this yard now. :)
OMG I cannot image there are sooooooooooo many slugs (big and small) in the gardern. OMG
Looks like a real slugfest.
*king of the hill theme song*
Slug Life.
So.. what happens to the slugs?
Me outside, holy cow how many slugs are tther
Those big slugs just freak me out
The most of them got their bellies full and never came back after. Minimal effectiveness
They sure love to be drunk
So many slugs!

0:45 Rest in Beer
They're so cute!
U being serious bruh
Well now you just have alcoholic slugs
cheers buddy
yeah, this is why you should not use beer trap
Wow would never have guessed
The black slugs just fall in
hahaha
but the big ones are getting away!!
Free beer!
Dont drink and Drive @ 0:45
At :45 at least he died how most college folk want to die..
I guess.. that means... organic slug pellets so. :(
Beer dishes are one of the biggest gardening myths around.
they drink and leave. but when do they die? poor little monsters.
What software was used?
If you used your head and filled the thing with beer you'd see better results
Ça ne marche pas avec de la bière sans alcool ! ! ! ! !
Anyone else willing them to fall in
666 views...wow
Holy shit
What no cowboy hats or fancy dress....???? What kind of a night out is this?
I didn’t know they could be that huge
Oh, yeah... but they get even bigger... the great grey slug gets up to 8 inches long... and I've seen some that big.
En gang til. Aadddd
There’s no cover!!
Dang it doesnt look like it worked 😩😔
did the one that fell in did he die? D;
Happily
Slug been does not seem to work very well.. You should have shown how many were dead in there.. Maybe 3, out of 60?
Try lean next time
ewww ewww ewww. I'm making one.
ewwiewwwie ewwzz X"D
Didnt work
Ew
weird how after the slug died in it they stopped drinking it
