For some reason they blamed racism because in this version April is black but that wasn't it either. Apparently the toys were incredibly ugly and kids like my nephew and niece just really wasn't into Rise. They liked the older tmnt. In fact I introduced them both to the first tmnt movie and they watched early 2000 series. The loved both then I think the 2012??? One came out and while it was good it just didn't slap like the older ones did. I collected the old tmnt toys I had a lot of the older toys from the 80's series I had when I was like 7 years old. I played with all kinds of toys I had care bears, strawberry shortcake, She-Ra, He-man, those tiny hot wheels cars, barbie. I had a blast when I was a kid. But if toy sells do well then a lot of the money goes back into the cartoon to make more episodes. It just depends on how well the target audience (which ARE kids) take to the cartoon and how well toys sell. That how it works. Also if they don't make toys for the cartoon they don't have that extra money to put into making more episodes.

Piracy is more a SYMPTOM of wack transmission and scheduling. Cancellation seems nowadays to stem more and more from arbitrary decisions. These companies have big layoffs and corporate reestructuring more often than ever. Everything is more unstable so it just takes the wrong person to not like the show to can it. Toys sales seem to be a weird factor since toy companies more and more don't want merch from 10 and up properties and concentrate on the toddler demographic.

I think the higher ups are mostly going with the analogy of that one episode of Always Sunny, where fans will probably go for the easier way to see a show or movie rather than go see something theatrically or go through the official means to see it and support it.
season 14 episode 2: "Thunder Gun 4: Maximum Cool"
the main bit i'm kind of reffering to is the ending for the episode
where after the Gang manages to get all the changes and things to make the movie a great and what should make it a success and everything they want, they still just end up pirating it.

When it isn't toys, it's advertisers. I'm not 100% certain how it works, but I think companies basically sign a global ad deal for the network and they pay based on average demographic viewership for the entire network or a defined block (such as the 6-9PM time frame). If you're a channel that is targeting boys age 6-11, you want to primarily have boys age 6-11 watching so you can have advertisements targeting them and advertiser willing to pay for that audience because they're going after them, but when it's something outside the demographic it's a much cheaper price because it's less likely to sell to the people interested. It's why you have sugary breakfast cereal advertised during spongebob and not Oprah.
If my "pay per channel" or "pay per time block" idea is correct, that would explain why a "wrong demographic" is a thing. If 5/6 shows in a block are really popular with boys but 1/6 is really popular with girls, and the advertisers don't have a choice on the show they are advertised with, now your demographic value goes down since now there's a "risk" of "gross booger slime station" airing during the "popular with girls" show and missing the people who would buy it, or "pretty fashion cat secret diary" aired with the shows that are popular with boys.
Same applies for "this is popular with teens and adults," kids aren't going to want car insurance and credit cards, and teens and adults aren't going to want toys and candy (at least most of the time).
I'm not part of any of those discussions so I don't know if I'm correct, but the limited amount of information I do know about advertising contracts and assumptions based on how kids channel's have programming blocks (or at least they used to) has me thinking this is what "the wrong demographic was watching it" means.

Over and over again corporate executives say they don't know how to target an older audience however they made a new market that is "adults looking for animation." By ignoring the market they made in the west they're passively funneling them to the anime market.

I saw Dana post some artwork of Luz in her titan form on her Instagram during the anniversary of The Owl House finale, and it made me wonder if she's willing to go through with the spin-off idea she hinted at in the finale or maybe a book series. _Gravity Falls_ wasn't the first show to make immediate selling books based on it, but I'd say Alex was easily one of the best show creators to influence others to capitalize on the idea, if not for the fact the journals and the show as a whole had far more secrets we didn't see, which is what I'm glad Bill's Book will expand on. _Amphibia_ effectively mirrored it when Matt released Marcy's Journal, so maybe Dana might do something similar. Maybe more insight to how Luz, Gus, Willow, Amity and Hunter spent their time in the human realm, them during the time-skip in the finale, Luz's a college life in the Boiling Isles. And yeah, we have famous comic creators like Moringmark keeping shows like TOH alive by touching on those scenarios, but it wouldn't hurt to hear different perspectives either, especially since - like Alex with Bill's Book - I think Dana would get (and definitely deserves) a lot more freedom with what she can do; she could go all out with her horror, and it would be just a great (imagine Odalia getting burned at the stake or decapitated on a guillotine)

High viewership only equals money when ad revenue is considered. In streaming, they weren’t initially selling ads, so viewers didn’t matter, they still make $10/month no more no less. In the streaming model, shows that are cheaper to produce are more important
The more seasons a show has, the more it costs to makes because of guild rules. That’s why some shows get canned after 2 seasons or before 5
Animation isn’t cheap, can’t be made cheaper (without a huge dip in quality), and they perceive that audience as less valuable.

Much like indie games can only thrive because they lack corporate meddling, animation should also go indie, like Helluvaboss. Even a crazy youtuber can make and live off merch, advertising money goes directly to them, and the fans get a show free to watch. Imagine Infinity Train just a youtube channel, probably tens of millions of subscribers, and just doing a 30 second short every other day would bring in the ad revenue needed to go on. Of course Infinity Train or any other of these shows can't go indie, because their characters are the IP of the big studios. They paid for it, so they can take it away and destroy it if they please. This is a lesson for new shows. Do the youtube thing!

I question how fans could be responsible for the death of TV animation?
Yes, some of these fans MAY have done some weird stuff in honor of their shows (such as that Hunger Force incident that made the news.) But we, the fans, are what give the industry the thing they seem to crave most...
    Mr. Krabs: The MONEY!
Without fan support, all these dumb projects that "seem" to be doing well for companies would die out before taking off. Granted, fan support doesn't ALWAYS bare the best kind of fruit. I mean...how else can one explain garbage like Velma getting new episodes while things like My Adventures with Superman, Unicorn or even Moon Girl are STILL left in the dark for renewal (let alone premieres for their new seasons.)
My point is fans don't ALWAYS bring harm to cartoons, the companies that make them share SOME of the blame as well. Look at how greedy Zsaslav is getting with his write-offs and all the poor decisions Bob Iger has been making. It's high time for new blood to take the reins of the studios...people who understand that while expensive, animation is a KEY COMPONENT of media that deserves more attention.

Yes, here come a wall of Text:
I'm not saying the story is the problem, but the lack in the presentation of different perspectives.
Not everyone understands how Shakespeare's Stories are , actually, a collection of tragedies with the purpose to not fall in the same disgraces of the character's. -and , when people forgot it, usually run in a tendency to "celebrate" that self-destructive behavior -
In the other hand, the companies try to not add more perspectives, they want to keep the merch under their control (they need a "demographic target") -Rick and Morty have a Geek/narcissist target, Steven universe have a LGBTQ/Social target ...-
Its not wrong at all , they are doing their job (they need the money to keep the production) but an aggressive marketing could be volatile-Warner didn't put a man on a McDonalds table screaming about a sauce... but they launch the sauce... Warner didn't send a Girl to a suicide attempt... but made a ship war until they made an apology of a few character's under a development process (The crystal gems are, in fact, Toxic. And Steven, slowly, help them to change and become in better people) Was not a good moment to made a ship marketing between Amethyst -who was not in her best moment- with a war criminal under arrest and cooperation agreement (aka: Peridot).

I hate when CEOs cancel a cartoon because they aren't selling 😒 merch.
It's total bs.. As there's US laws against using cartoons to sell children's products
(It was established in the 90's that kids were too vulnerable to the old 80's brainwashing of using cartoons to sell toys and junk.. so cartoons had to be educational or not have merch)
(Which is probably why we don't see much merch or networks break a law)
Of course, networks didn't completely follow all standards and guidelines.
But it did lead to the slow decline in Saturday morning cartoons so government has power
Course, a show shouldn't disappear just cuz it can't sell a toy.. especially if the show is surprising very well written and would teach more than terrible cash grab shows.

To me these cancellations are victims of a monetization problem. The companies and producers can’t figure out a new way to recoup their money from the cost of making animation. Back in the day animation was on local television essentially free, at the cost of ads. These companies also had toys, merchandise and physical media to gain profits. All of which these companies in some way crippled. They went all in on cable and then streaming so much so there’s barely any animation on local television. They depend of paid services to make money. I haven’t seen any advancements in physical media because the focus is on digital media. Digital media is fleeting because when the company owning the media go away so do your purchases.
I dislike having to compare anime to western animation but it has to be done. Anime is respected as a medium of its own but also used as advertisement for manga, merchandise, games, toys, physical media and more. If companies of western animation just put hopes of profit on a table with a singular leg such as a streaming service, then they should be prepared to eat on the floor.

    • @RhiKlowho
      @RhiKlowho 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Looking to Anime to solve the cost issue for western cartoon isn't going to completely help. Anime often isn't just isn't profitable. Its not uncommon for anime being created to advertise the source material to just get a single 12 or 24 episode season even if there is a desire for more, this isn't an uncommon issue for popular shojo series. Anime studios and productions are often more ruthless when it comes to cancelling shows than western sources.

Bruh, PREACH. People NEED to be aware. That's why I try to spread the message whenever I get the chance, as best I can. Also, since youu were asking, the cancelation that hurt the most was Infinity Train. I was with and for that show since the PILOT. It was a huge tragedy, and I also have hope it'll get picked up again, by another streaming service AND for another season/the movie/whatever. The wound is still very fresh on that one, my friend.

I tend to digress since it depends on the type of fans rather than the fans themselves.
Seems like it’s more about the profit and the moolah than it is about *actual* creativity now with cartoons.
I mean, have people seen shows and movie franchises that get milked so much they become a shell of what they once were? There are some examples of such.

I like that this video goes back years prior, to show that cancellations are not some new phenomena. It's always been executives. With that said, with shows like Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Scott Pilgrim anime, Blue Eyed Samura, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, Invincible, and upcoming shows like Batman Caped Crusader, Among Us animated series, Dead Cells animated series, it's good that animation is still going strong.

Glitch Techs and Mao Mao received no support whatsoever from their respective networks either. No commercials, no toys, no marketing, nothing.
Yet, both of them enjoy a pretty great popularity and seem to have a strong fandom.
And yet, both of these shows have a (theoretically) upcoming season waiting to be made, yet nothing is happening, leaving these two gems floating around in limbo/development hell.

When it comes to most shows it's a disconnect between the fans and the funders. Shows live and die on mech sales and when the merchandise your offering doesn't connect with your biggest demographic you fail. This is why terrible shows can thrive while great shows can die. The terrible shoe's merch connects to it's audience, while the great show's audience has no route to support it.
Some blame can be placed on corporations funding shows that aren't financially viable because of the audience it targets.
Their some groups of fans who can kill a show because they expect the show to continue with out having to support it. The "I like this show so it should be free" additude can infect a fandom. To be fair few of the shows in this video suffer that, or the "this should be free" fans are a minority.

I am in a bit of a grey area when it comes to supporting piracy. I will watch shows legally if I can, such as if it's on disney plus, netflix, or hulu (in disney plus), but if I can't watch it legally, but I still want to watch it, I pirate it. I would much rather watch shows legally, as that supports the creators, rather than me pirating it, which does not support the creators. The only exceptions I have, is if new episodes are coming out on tv, but not streaming, then I pirate the new episodes. Sometimes I pirate shows just so I can watch some cringe show without showing that I like it (or I don't want other people to see that I watch it). I personally pirate bluey, only because the austrailian version is better than on disney plus (as disney censored many things).
Overall, I'm ok with piracy, but if I can, I will try my best to watch things legally.
