    So glad to see older games with newer videos. I'm fairly new to board gaming so all these old games are games I don't know how to play and annoyingly it is sometimes hard to find good videos on them. I guess I am a little spoiled by now when it comes to sound and image quality so I find it hard to get through older videos.

      Heh, thanks! Well some of my older videos look like _much_ older videos, even though they aren't _that_ old! Took me some time to learn things.

    I'm not sure of the design intent but something to note about the icon for the green (worker) deck. It may not be an H or a chair. It is also the letter in the Cyrillic alphabet for the sound "ch". And the Russian word for "man" or "person" is che-lo-VYEK'. It's been years but I remember the word chelovyek having a subcontext of the common, ordinary person - the workers.
    It could be a coincidence, but. . .

    Hola. Muy buena tu explicación del juego y la reseña. Estoy por hacerme una versión print & play de este juego. No conozco a nadie que hable mal de el. Y tiene el plus del arte, que es muy por decirlo de alguna forma.....particular 😅. Saludos de un nuevo suscriptor desde Uruguay 👋

    Great overview/review! I love this game. Dusted this off recently to play with my daugther and she liked it (with some coaching on decision making). It could use a cheesy fantasy/sci-fi retheme to get my son interested though ;).

    "You're not competing in a shared space, there's just this central pool of cards that you're trying to get before anyone else does.." Hmm.. :P

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. Taking turns drafting cards is a pretty low bar for a "shared space". 🙂

    • @helxis
      @helxis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BoardGems If the game is well designed, it is no different than claiming any other sort of resource before another player does. A spot on a map, a worker placement location, etc. Think it depends on how one looks at this. If drafting a card can make another player groan, that is interactive enough to qualify, in my opinion!

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure. You can't easily draw a line to separate "interactive" and "non-interactive". DoaM games are more interactive than auction games, which are more interactive than something like Saint Petersburg, which is more interactive than something like Cascadia.
      Keep in mind, this isn't a criticism. I love Saint Petersburg! But "take the thing I wanted" isn't much in the way of interaction in a shared space. I played Meadow 4p recently, and we're drafting from a central pool of cards similar to Saint Petersburg. Players would take cards I wanted, and that's "interactive", but the same effect could be done to me by rolling dice to automatically remove cards. Sure, there are race conditions, but generally one doesn't much care what the other players do. (Saint Petersburg is more interactive than Meadow, there are more factors to consider like how many empty spaces on the board to leave, but I still wouldn't say it's terribly interactive in a shared space.)
      Good discussion. 🙂

      @@BoardGems I'm going to get some plays in on BGA and see what I think! To me, the hallmark of a good drafting game should be that other players care quite a lot about what you're taking; and that there is strategy in taking things more because of who it hurts than because it helps you. It is definitely less directly interactive than, say, Tigris and Euphrates. But, if executed well, can still be much more indirectly interactive than something like Cascadia.

    Huh, didn't know that about the designer's name. I ended up picking up a copy of Pantheon for $5 (in shrink on your shelf behind you). I heard it was by the same designer as Stone Age, however I was confused because the designer names were different on the boxes. That clears things up for me.

      Yeah, good old games often become hard to find. Maybe Hans im Glück will reprint it someday. Here's hoping!

    Couldn't decide between the two versions so I kept both of them and put them fully sleeved in the 2nd edition box. I love this game so much that I made some money tiles for both version. But I also like Lacerda games which you may find overly convoluted. ;)

    I played this recently with an older gentleman. Was a fun time. I love how later in the game you are just getting 20-30 money and they you get to spend them. This game is on BGA if anyone is interested.
    Love these kinds of videos

    Thank you so much for another great episode. I love "Saint P" to pieces and I'm really happy to see, that you qualify this game as a "gem" as well!
    Also I'd really like to hear from you why you think "Agricola" was so important? You told that it was a really big leap forward, and I'm lookin forward to know more about it!

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ah, yes, I didn't go into that in detail. There's a definite difference in styles between what I call the "OG" (old-school German-style) games that peaked in popularity in the late '90s, and the "modern euros" that are most popular now. So many games come out every year, the transition over time is going to be gradual, but you can look back at certain games as leaps forward. Agricola was one of them, because of its big decks of unique cards with special abilities. You'd get a random assortment at the beginning, or pick and pass with the other players. It was big, expensive, and a huge risk the publisher took, but it paid off, the game became a massive hit and influenced many games that followed. Newer games like Wingspan and Terraforming Mars owe at least a little bit to Agricola.

    Thanks, this was useful. I just got a trade offer for the first edition and I wasn't sure which edition would be better to get my hands on.

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean, I'd rather have second edition than no edition! But otherwise, yeah, first edition is first choice for me. I'd only consider 2e if I absolutely *had* to play St. Pete with five players. (Ideally you'd get the expansion, too, for the replacement cards, which 2e already has. But old expansions are often significantly harder to find than old base games.)

  • @Benny_Shoga
    @Benny_Shoga 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What are your thoughts on the additional market phase in the 2nd edition game?

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's... fine. It makes the game better for 5p than the expansion for 1e does, but it slows the game way down. Not just because of the extra phase, but also because there are more cards to buy and not more money to start with, so the start of the game drags. I would prefer to play without it if playing with fewer than 5p.

    The channel doesn't seem to have too many two-player games. Do you like Kupferkessel Co.? Or the Kosmos two-player series?

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know that I'd agree! I covered Rösenkonig (Kosmos 2p), Crazy Chicken, Bakerstreet and Manoeuvre. I will probably do Duell and Richelieu at some point, and I'm trying to get my son to try 1960 with me (without success yet). Would you recommend Kupferkessel Co. for the channel?

    • @upandawaygames
      @upandawaygames 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You also did Medici v. Strozzi, but Rosenkonig is cheating. ;)
      Yes, for sure, also Jambo, Lost Cities, Halali, Balloon Cup, Richelieu and so on. I would probably try him on Twilight Struggle before 1960...

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lost Cities is quite famous, I won't do that one for the channel. I don't have Balloon Cup anymore, and Jambo has gone missing. I could do Halali/Tally Ho, my son and I played that quite a bit (though we have a love/hate relationship with it).

    • @upandawaygames
      @upandawaygames 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      First lost Auf Achse, now Jambo, huh?
      Do you like Auf der Reeperbahn?
      I know what you mean about Halali. Have to accept the luck. But the individual puzzles along the way are interesting.
      Have you even played Kupferkessel?
      Oh, what about Midnight Party, which recently showed up on BGA?

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Auf Achse wasn't lost, it was wrecked by customers. :) And a small selection of games including Jambo are in a box unaccounted for.
      Auf der Reeperbahn / Times Square, I played with my wife a couple of times and couldn't get into it. I understand now you have to play it many times to "get" it though. It and Royal Visit, its remake, have been suggested.
      I've never played Kupferkessel Co. Just added it to my want-in-trade list.
      I'd consider doing Midnight Party. I have the great Amigo edition with Vohwinkel's Escher-inspired board art. Wasn't really on my radar to do but will consider it!
