  • If you've ever messed with a rivnut, you know how frustrating it can be to install one, especially if you don't have a rivnut tool.
    A trip to one of the big box hardware stores and less than $5 can get you this DIY rivnut tool.
    Nothing special about the bolt (i.e. grade 8, etc).

    Out of all the solutions for installing a threadnut, this is the one that worked. Simple, straightforward, and easy to replicate.

  • @threefive2072
    @threefive2072 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I believe you will want to use a larger flange washer so your box wrench head can press against the washer and hold the rivnut against work piece. The purpose of applying pressure is to keep the rivnut from spinning. In this example, I'm sure the O-ring under the rivnut flange helps.
    I believe there may be a little misunderstanding about how these DIY rivnut tools work. The point of the threaded sleeve is to space out the two tools so your socket can spin freely. The point of the washer is to apply pressure axially along the bolt shaft to keep the rivnut flange pressed against the workpiece. The fact that the sleeve is a coupling that fits a wrench is unimportant. The sleeve is a spacer. The washer that presses against the flange is what matters.
    Please correct me if I am mistaken! There seems to be a mystery surrounding these devices if you are unfamiliar with them, when in reality they are quite simple. I suspect that the 'mystery' stems from the fact that a nut/coupling and wrench are being used in an atypical way. G'luck.

    This is the LAZY MAN'S way! You should used a fitted threaded nut instead of a slider nut. YOU risk ruining the threads from the stress of tightening with a drill. Too many people are doing this and those of us who do things the right way will always cringe at this! You ruin them threads and you'll have a much bigger job on your hands.

    Honestly after installing a few this way in the past with having one rivnut spin in the hole and eat up the ridges, I would recommend using a matched thread long nut on that bolt and tightening the long nut down (with lubed washers) not the bolt. Only takes 1 spinner to ruin your day. If the rivnut spins it wont work and is a major pita to cut out without damage to the part.

    • @JerichoRally
      @JerichoRally  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Ir didn't take me long to figure out that these "rivnut" guns are glorified drivers (nut drivers). Knowing that, it follows that name brand rivnut guns are a scam. You figured out a way to convert your driver into a rivnut installer and more people should watch your video to understand how ripped off they have or will be after buying a big name rivnut gun.
    This method can be used with any cordless, electric or pneumatic drill. Great work MT!
    How about:
    1) inserted some 10m stud into my drill
    2) added one or two washers
    3) screwed a rivnut onto the stud, flange out
    4) poked that through the job hole
    5) gripped the rivnut with some clamp pliers while . . .
    6) powering the drill clockwise (foward)
    Would that do the same thing?

    You did not mention that your $4.50 GM riv-nut is made of zinc or aluminum. This trick does not work on stainless steel riv-nuts without hardened grade 8 hardware to collapse the riv-nut.The use of a hammer drill also increases one's chance of not twisting off the grade 8 bolt before collapsing the stainless steel riv-nut.
    My advise is to not use stainless steel riv-nuts. They are nothing but a pain when using the smaller sizes.

    • @JerichoRally

      You are absolutely right. I used the stainless rivnuts to install mud guards on my 2015 Silverado and it was a nightmare!!! The rivnuts shown here were much nicer to work with! (it also helped that the factory hole in the tailgate was hexagon shaped like that of the rivnut)

    I don't think you need to use the wrench to hold the coupling-nut. What difference does it make if the coupling nut spins or not?

    Now you can screw in a 2 foot long bolt to let the tailgaters know how far away to stay!

  • @james10739
    @james10739 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have seen that method but for me I would use the method with a nut and bolt and you hold the bolt and tighten the nut so that you are putting less stress on the rivnut threads you are putting more on your bolt but they are cheap

  • @sandermez3856

    this is a bad idea, especially if you will be doing many rivnuts.
    The problem is that this trick requires you to tighten the screw into the rivnut to compress it. basically you are turning a screw into a rivnut, tightening and compressing and turning at the same time, damaging the threading, wich is under a lot of strain!
    Instead, how rivnut installation tools usually work is you turn a screw into a rivnut, then it STOPS once inserted, and a press pulls it together, compressing the rivnut. The difference here is that it's a pulling motion without turning into the screw, placing less strain on the threading and avoiding damaging it.
    This may work sometimes, but the worst thing is to have a rivnut stuck in a hole and ruined threading. Removing that is a hassle!

    • @aerohard
      @aerohard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You only damage the threads if you over-tighten the nut. Spin-spin pneumatic tools are the most commonly used commercially. He is essentially doing spin-spin in slow motion. The only thing I see wrong is he seems to be using nuts designed for hex-shaped holes instead of knurled body nuts for round holes.

    I am gonna try this today. I bought a whole kit on slamazon because I thought it would save me time and money... nope the M4 attachment I tried using for the first time on a stainless rivnut to mount my ram mount base plate in my work truck and the threads ripped right off of the tool before it even started to crush the rivnut. Now it's useless 🤦‍♂️
