Very true. The entire industry is besieged by lies, and even well-meaning, often correct, Dr.s are making basic mistakes. The reason some supplements are bad is because the FDA does not provide adequate enforcement of its regulations, and has continually ignored calls to ban common substances, or force manufacturers to better vet their suppliers, who often use illegal substances, like lead in turmeric, or fillers in herbal supplements.

Fresh jackfruit has a delicious flavor if you get it raw off the tree. We had a tree like that in the islands. It would ripen and we would eat it. It has a rich banana like texture and flavor. But in the cans you would think it has no taste or flavor because it's picked before it's ripened for commercial reason.
Hello. I have been a "McDougall" follower for over 2 years now, lost weight, feel great at 71;...still on a bit of B P medication but hoping to get off those in near future. I do have a question with regards to Vitamin D supplementation: I have had 2 melanomas (successfully removed and melanoma free for 10 years ) but was told to STAY OUT OF THE SUN....How do I get my Vit D without taking a pill? What about iron for endurance athletes doing long hours and sweating it out and depleting their stores? There's only so much spinach they can eat. Would supplements work in that circumstance?
Very likely, although men have to be careful with iron supplementation, as there are many bad forms, men accumulate it, and its cancer promoting in high amounts. There are many instances where supplements not only work, but save the individual's life, for example from a critical B-vitamin deficiency. N-Acetyl Cysteine saves lives in hospitals, as well as activated charcoal, Iodine supplementation, and magnesium, which can bring various organs and imbalances into homeostasis.
I’m ophthalmologist here in BRAZIL. A pacient(B12 :89! 3 neurologists and nothing, no cause for his bilateral optic neuropathy….. corticosteroids pulse therapy….Came to me and I ask B12….I’m estrict vegetarian 🌱 PB!!!!! BINGO….. thanks dr Mac Dougall !!!!he’s fine but I had to suplement a little bit …(vit D 19 😱, too!!) and ask him change his FOOD!!!!!
Except B12, don't ever take a vitamin supplement without a diagnosed deficiency, and ALWAYS consult a dietitian, or get otherwise counselled from a reliable source, about how to correct the deficiency with food.

Exactly. They get it in imported cans and think it has no flavor. But wow, if they get a fresh one right off the tree. They would never want it off a can ever.
I will say I started taking supplements of varying sorts and. When I even though the B12 and later the B1 did make me feel some better at the time, I don't feel like they are helping in the long term. And, the other ones I took ... yeah, no. I feel so much worse after taking some for a couple of days. I am seriously thinking about taking all of them and putting them in our compost pile where they can maybe break down and do some good. This is my fourth try with following advice on taking vitamins and such. I have not found them helpful except for a quick fix of a real serious imbalance, which probably could have been fixed by me just eating better, anyway.

Caloric restriction for life extension does not in and of itself work. It only works if it is a healthy diet which is a high carbohydrate low protein low fat diet consistent with McDougall diet. Low protein compared to a normal diet is a primary aspect of the concept. Furthermore, the degree of caloric restriction when following the proper diet is much higher than originally thought and is consistent with people like the Okinawan centenarians of the past.

If you have genuine gluten allergy or sensitivity, you're one of those outliers I'm afraid. Don't know if you've been tested, but as we know, there are a number of other options, and it's worth it if you're genuinely intolerant.

Given that it wasn't clear from your first comment as whether gluten allergy and sensitivity testing had taken place for you, alongside any other relevant tests, was what I was trying to put across here. If these aren't done, what can seem to be gluten intolerance commonly can also be a red herring, and masking other conditions and underlying issues. It's not been uncommon, and sometimes for people posting on the McDougall videos and forums, to assume solely gluten issues, whether they've been practising the program or not - but can sometimes be other things happening. Given what you've just described here, it sounds like there could be as well? - but really hope then that medical care is getting there for you. And that you can find relief 🤞
It’s a year later when I first read this comment thread, and the exchange stuck with me for some reason. It’s interesting to me that some foods containing gluten can be missed to this extent. I mean, I get it. I love bread but I find I have a bodily change to my breathing when I eat it, though I have been tested and have no allergic reaction. So I wonder what the gluten in my bloodstream is doing for other organs, especially the brain. There are easy non gluten breads that can be made quickly at home, eg with lentils and psyllium. I have some of these on hand generally. But I think that you have to be honest and ask yourself how you finish this phrase: “bread and …” If your answer is ‘butter’ or margarine or jam or cold cuts or cheese or peanut butter, well then you aren’t following the McDougall diet to a T. What is it you are missing in actuality? Sometimes I just put a tomato slice or banana or homemade humus on my lentil bun, and that’s satisfying for me. Your mileage may vary. Other gluten-containing foods like pasta or wraps are easy to swap out too; I don’t have the same trouble with rice pasta, or cauliflower wraps or whatever but I don’t crave these like I did bread. It may be the wheat exorphins that cause the craving (these are also in dairy) but I think it is the gluten that causes the trouble in the gut, that was proved by Fasano.
I recommend you look up heavy menstrual bleeding on Earthclinic. I'd post the link but my comment would be deleted. There are a number of natural remedies but the one that stood out to me was cayenne pepper, which resolved this problem literally within minutes.
Wonder what you're like for any co-morbid medical conditions prior, any aggravating factors such as meds, supplements, and/or any sensitities to wheat/gluten/soya etc. Sounds like you may need medical consultation from the Program or its equivalent for this one. Heavy menstrual periods shouldn't otherwise be happening.
@@JohnDoe-xk1dv I took angstrom iron and bone support, nano particle sized minerals this past month. I don't take any medicines. I do believe I have some nutritional deficiencies and low calcium, which could affect bleeding. I was eating some wheat the past two months and some organic tofu. I normally don't eat wheat. I wonder if wheat/soy products could affect hormones. I only eat organic soy. I try not to eat processed foods but if I do, the ingredient list is pretty clean with no emulsifiers.

You might benefit, with hypothyroidism and vulnerability with weight, a video consultation with the Program, or equivalent. Depends then on your current medical care.
I guess it is important say this pacient I discovered eat rice and beans, don’t eat meat…. But don’t eat vegetables, legumes and fruits! He’s 14 years old!!!!! Visual field gets better one eye , but left eye there is still scotoma(24-2 visual field)
Check and study if you get your critical nutrients home. For hypothyroidism particularly: Iodine >150µg per day, selenium >60µg (most vegs are deficient outside North America), Vitamin D3 >2000IU or equivalent UVB exposure (D require some study to unterstand). On low fat diets particularly: Vitamins A / E / K. Generally: Zinc (almost all vegs are deficient because phytate blocks zinc) Understand that aggressive calorie restriction & sports smashes the thyroid, which is part of the yo-yo effect -> Ease out. If hypothyroidism (which prevents weight loss) doesn't go away (e.g. persistent auto-immune disease), of course you need treatment.
To be fair pellagra is largely the result of *forgoing* food processing - namely nixtamalization. The correct lesson is not so much that food processing is arrogant and bad as much as arrogance in disregarding tradition and God's wisdom is harmful.
I feel that listening to Dr. McDougall is pointless because he doesn't cite studies and we're supposed to assume that everything he says is true. All he's doing is preaching to the choir. Pointless.

If you don't go into the sun and take no vitamin D supplement, the only other way to get your vitamin D3 is from fish, like sardines or cod liver oil.

I get cramps and muscle spasms if I don’t take magnesium. I take 4 x the recommended dose. How can I stop taking them?

It's good to get tested. You can use an independent lab. Know your numbers, it's important.

I'm not gluten sensitive according to the doctor's test but when I eat wheat my arthritis gets painful and I get food cravings.
It’s a year later when I first read this comment thread, and the exchange stuck with me for some reason. It’s interesting to me that some foods containing gluten can be missed to this extent. I mean, I get it. I love bread but I find I have a bodily change to my breathing when I eat it, though I have been tested and have no allergic reaction. So I wonder what the gluten in my bloodstream is doing for other organs, especially the brain.
There are easy non gluten breads that can be made quickly at home, eg with lentils and psyllium. I have some of these on hand generally.
But I think that you have to be honest and ask yourself how you finish this phrase: “bread and …”
If your answer is ‘butter’ or margarine or jam or cold cuts or cheese or peanut butter, well then you aren’t following the McDougall diet to a T. What is it you are missing in actuality? Sometimes I just put a tomato slice or banana or homemade humus on my lentil bun, and that’s satisfying for me. Your mileage may vary.
Other gluten-containing foods like pasta or wraps are easy to swap out too; I don’t have the same trouble with rice pasta, or cauliflower wraps or whatever but I don’t crave these like I did bread.
It may be the wheat exorphins that cause the craving (these are also in dairy) but I think it is the gluten that causes the trouble in the gut, that was proved by Fasano.
So should that last lady go back and have more surgery until the margins are clear?
But, I did find some use with some herbs and such. Foti Root, Triphala, turmeric.
What is his take on iron supplements? I am anemic from heavy menstrual bleeding and in my early 40s. I have been WFPB for years.
I recommend you look up heavy menstrual bleeding on Earthclinic. I'd post the link but my comment would be deleted. There are a number of natural remedies but the one that stood out to me was cayenne pepper, which resolved this problem literally within minutes.
Wonder what you're like for any co-morbid medical conditions prior, any aggravating factors such as meds, supplements, and/or any sensitities to wheat/gluten/soya etc.
Sounds like you may need medical consultation from the Program or its equivalent for this one. Heavy menstrual periods shouldn't otherwise be happening.
@@JohnDoe-xk1dv I took angstrom iron and bone support, nano particle sized minerals this past month. I don't take any medicines. I do believe I have some nutritional deficiencies and low calcium, which could affect bleeding. I was eating some wheat the past two months and some organic tofu. I normally don't eat wheat. I wonder if wheat/soy products could affect hormones. I only eat organic soy. I try not to eat processed foods but if I do, the ingredient list is pretty clean with no emulsifiers.
Exercise is the King! Diet is the Queen!

still my heart beat rises on thus diet
i can follow this whole life if white rice and potato with salt are my main course of my meal.

Try switching to whole grains, and use far less salt.
Sweet potatoes, cucumbers, Quinoa, watering for a half hour, than rinse and cook, Sellerie, and cantaloupe, and a lot of greens, try

What if your following exactly what you say, and your body is not releasing weight, hypothyroidism is a factor as well, what then?
Check and study if you get your critical nutrients home.
For hypothyroidism particularly: Iodine >150µg per day, selenium >60µg (most vegs are deficient outside North America), Vitamin D3 >2000IU or equivalent UVB exposure (D require some study to unterstand).
On low fat diets particularly: Vitamins A / E / K.
Generally: Zinc (almost all vegs are deficient because phytate blocks zinc)
Understand that aggressive calorie restriction & sports smashes the thyroid, which is part of the yo-yo effect -> Ease out.
If hypothyroidism (which prevents weight loss) doesn't go away (e.g. persistent auto-immune disease), of course you need treatment.

I feel that listening to Dr. McDougall is pointless because he doesn't cite studies and we're supposed to assume that everything he says is true. All he's doing is preaching to the choir. Pointless.

He's giving his opinion. It's YOUR job to investigate all information given by anyone, especially when pertaining to your health.
@@afoxnamedmulder As he's speaking as an authority, it's his job to document. He should at least be providing links to cites for every scientific assertion he makes. Otherwise, as I said, he's just preaching to the choir and it's not worth my time to listen. At least Dr. Greger cites studies, although I think he overhypes some things.
