  • In this episode we compare the 996.1 3.7 with a 997.1 3.8 Carrera S to see the difference in acceleration and also take a listen to the 2 different exhaust setups. Thanks again to Toby for lending his beautiful 997 for this test.

    Flat 6 Innovations in Georgia transformed my 997.1 C4S x51. It is now a 4.3 with forged pistons and rods and Nikasil liners, plus a whole host of other engine goodies.
    It now has more torque than my 991.2 GT3, and is faster in daily driving.
    All in all, it’s an absolute beast of a car and I need to sell the GT3.

      Glad to hear, getting close to pulling the trigger preemptively, sounds like you had a great experience. Curious, how long did it take between scheduling and the work being completed? Possible you could share how much you ended up spending?
      Thanks

      @@richardclegg5853 Do it, you won't regret it. I spent big bucks, but I got every option. Budget the price of a decent 997.1 and you'll be in the right ballpark. Mine was part of the last batch of 'full vehicle turnaround' at their shop. Now they operate on an exchange model, so you need to find a local shop to extract and install. 9 months later, it feels like it's up on power, maybe 30-40 bhp.

    Great video. The 996 sounds more responsive.

      Thanks, yeah that's kind of how it feels particularly in 2nd gear, partly because of the differences in refinement, you feel more in the 996.

    You’ve proven my thoughts but you don’t account for how both cars feel, for me the 3.7 gen1 is so much more raw and communicative

    • @leeevernden
      @leeevernden  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You are correct yes, I was focussed on the engine performance but you're right the 997 is more refined but loses the edge the 996 has which makes the 996 a more engaging drive.

    I would love to hear your own back to back driving impressions. Most reviews would cite that the 996 feels lighter on it's feet and changes direction more keenly, the 997 feels more grown-up and stable but heavier. The 19" wheels and tyres have a lot to do with this as well.

    • @leeevernden
      @leeevernden  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes exactly this, I didn't have much time with the car but yes essentially it feels heavier and wider and therefore more planted on the road, it's noticeably more refined but at the same time you can feel the 996 platform is still there, you just don't feel as connected to everything I would say so the drive is not quite as visceral as it is in the 996.1. I have also heard the steering feel is better with the 996 but I didn't push the 997 through the corners so I can't comment on that.

      @@leeeverndenvariable ratio steering on the 997 vs fixed on the 996. The effect being the 997 feels more stable and ‘refined’ especially at speed compared to the very direct feel of the 996. The 997S PASM set up plants the car significantly but also isn’t as playful.

    This is extremely interesting. I suspect your car was making more power on a cold day. I am blown away by your fantastic project. I have a 997 C2S which I’m hoping I can find the funds to treat it to a 4.1 ltr Hartech conversion.

      Hi, I completely agree, for me the 996 and 997 are far more interesting than the frankly synthetic and bloated 991 and 992. Clearly you've spent quite a bit on your 996, but probably less than the first year depreciation on a 992. As I am writing I am just reading the next comment down about the 4.3 litre monster that someone has created in Georgia, clearly you're inspiring people all over. @@leeevernden

    Are the gear ratios in the transmissions the same? I can't see where the drag coefficients would differ, but that would only come in at high speeds anyway. Do both engines share the same stroke and are the camshaft specifications any different?

  • @paulreese1291
    @paulreese1291 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Well, one difference....if one carefully looks at the engine area, this 997 has the X51 powerkit package. This is not just a chip re-tune but a total package that consists of different cylinder heads with an aluminum, not plastic, variable resonance intake system (flow-optimized) intake and exhaust ports ( the intake encourages the air to compress more air charge into the cylinder ), a larger intake manifold and throttle body, flow-optimized X51 headers. So all considered the 996 Hartech 3.7 did rather well.....

      Are you quite sure? Searching the net suggests the following: M97.01 3.8 engine of the 997.1 S ALWAYS has alu intake manifolds; M96.05 3.6 in base 997.1 and M97.21 3.4 in Boxters has plastic intake manifolds. Also, it's the M96 from the 996 where the X51 package introduces alu intake manifolds as opposed to plastic ones (I know that bit for a fact, 'cause I've got one ;-). Engine designation M96/03S ).

    Interesting comparison. If you had them on a B road you wouldnt be able to separate them. I have a 996.2 with Hartech 4.1 and as you will know the additional torque transforms the car

    • @leeevernden
      @leeevernden  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Indeed, certainly 2nd gear at full chat they felt exactly the same. Your 4.1 - was that done using some parts from the 3.8? What's your power and torque? 2wd or 4wd?

      @@leeevernden It is a 996 targa so 2wd and the engine build uses parts bespoke to the 4.1. I have a print out for 371bhp and 450Nm torque which is essentially the same as the 992 base spec carrera. Comparing it to the 992 Carrera T with its manual box would be interesting

      @@dwarfyh32 Only 371hp out of a 4.1? Was there no option to opt for more agressive camshafts? 3.8 x51 already reach that kind of power, although stock not in a safe manner
