Porsche 911 996 Big Throttle Body Kit Install & TEST

  • I'm installing the very controversial and argued-to-death-on-Porsche-forums GT3 Throttle Body and Plenum kit for use with Porsche 996 and 997.1 chassis cars. Some say this kit completely woke their engine up, and shaved half a second off of their 1/4 times. Others have said that they lost 50hp on the Dyno after installing the kit. I want to find out for myself. We'll install the kit, flash the ECU, and do some acceleration tests.

This matches what I’ve heard - both the 3.4 and 3.6 motors are basically optimized out of the crate and there really isn’t much you can do to improve them short of supercharging them or doing major work. Better spending the money on stripping out weight, or just lightening the flywheel and putting a sports exhaust on it. Even that’s just for the noise! I’ve got a standard one though and y’know what? It’s spot on as it is. 👍🏼

Apparently the stock exhaust and especially the cats are really really restrictive from what I've heard. You can get some decent improvement with a better flowing exhaust.

I have a 996.1 with tune/pipes/k&N intake. Didn't do the plenum. Definitely can feel the difference over a stock 3.4 but mostly over 4k RPM and its a sizeable difference. With the tune I have if I drop the RPM's below 600ish it'll throw O2 code and kick it back to stock tune. Makes the car easier to drive in stop and go traffic. It'll also kick out of tune if I run anything but 93 octane. I found this quite odd when I first got the car but have a great indy shop and its just what the car does. I got a Bluetooth OBD plug I just clear the codes en route and you can feel the mapping change and the car smooth out. Appreciate the honest review, I'm glad I trusted my mechanic on this one. You'll get way more for your money by just throwing some PilotSport 4S's. Doesn't matter how much power you have if you can't put it down..

Only throttle body mod worth doing is ITB's in my experience. As you say, unless you've done everything else (porting head, cams etc) there's really no point to this mod on its own. Nice car you have there though and thanks for taking the time to upload. Mark

Thanks for an honest review. Plenum mod could give you some power increase but only as a component of a major engine rebuilt - which was exactly your point. Best of luck with your forthcoming projects, regards !

HM - is there an upload of pre & post 996 X-Pipe install?
I’m wondering if the X-Pipe mod brought a pronounced droning sound at 6th Gear Interstate Cruising with it.
      I’m still running OEM exhaust on my 3.4L 996 Cabriolet. I don’t wish to sacrifice & Lose Comfort for Added HP. I love to travel in my 996 & have a ‘75 Carrera S (fitted with 3.2L & G50) for Go-Fast & Get-Loud times.

I know with the MA1/9A1 engines (997 & 987 gen 2) the difference between the 3.4 L & 3.6 L is the stroke to get more displacement, so a little more TQ & HP and they use the same cylinder heads. If the M96 design followed the same path the heads are your engines restriction. The 3.8 L has a larger bore, bigger valves & hotter camshafts. You may not feel more HP until the higher RPM"s are in play. I have a 2010 Cayman S that has had all the induction & exhaust modifications and I've had positive results.

This job becomes a bit easier if you drop the rear engine mounts as much the threads allow - about 20 mm. Also it is better to put the bands so that the tightening screw is on top of the plenum.

I see you're in CA, so am I. What have you done about the new tuning restriction in our state? Have you reverted everythinng back to OEM, or are you still able to operate it as is?

From what I have heard, It seems that reflashes are only detectible on boosted cars where the boost threshold has been changed. The tune I got is not detectible with smog checks (I have had two since this video).

hi there, I live in California, and I am doing a 4.0-liter swap in my 997 do you mind sharing the name of the place you used to flash your ECU?

I used ECU Tuning Group. They have multiple locations in California. Not only in L.A, but in the SF Bay as well. If you decide to call them, try to reach Jags Gill, who is the head tuner.

Thanks for the video, I agree with you, the engine on the 996 is pretty much optimized, mine is stock, always been a fan of xpipes but concerned about loosing low end torque.

I didn't notice any low RPM torque loss on my car after I installed my X-pipe. It might be a different story on the 3.4 though.

Millisecond is not 1/10th of a second but 1/1000th of a second. A tenth is thus 100 milliseconds.
