    I did exactly this to my 3.4 Gen1 manual coupe. Had the car back approx 6 months now and all I can say is it absolutely transforms the car. Grant and tobias at Hartech are top blokes, no bs just straight facts. Performance wise mines putting out near 340bhp. As a comparison it’s got the slight legs on my pals 997 3.8s. If you’re thinking of doing the conversion, do it 100%, you will not be disappointed

      Brilliant, good to hear and I'm really looking forward to it now. Grant has been talking me through it so far and I agree seems like a top bloke. That's good to know about the 3.8s, I guess the weight difference helps the 996 vs that car too?

      @@leeevernden exactly right. Those 3.8s were 350bhp from factory but realistically a 15 year old one with 70k on clock will prob be around 340 ish now. Then you throw in the 130 odd kilo weight difference. Much much prefer the drive on my gen1. With factory M030 and with factory Limited Slip diff, it’s feels so much more ‘alive’.

    Awesome, excited to watch your progress on this. I live in the USA and we have a company like Hartech called flat 6 innovations. They do nikisil cylinders and make it a 4.0 with head work etc. I had mine done last winter and love it. The FSI 4.0 make about 400 hp and 350 tq at the crank with exhaust , intake, and dyno tuning.. You will have a keeper when done for sure! Good luck!

      @@leeevernden they really target torque with their build, but the results from their most recent builds would indicate about 475bhp at the crank, perhaps a little higher if they get lucky (the heads and intake pipes have already shown very encouraging numbers).
      Power is not what these cars are all about, it’s the chassis balance and overall usability that makes the 911 so great.
      More power just means potential for trouble.

For me it's as much about the rebuild as the conversion, having a fresh start for the engine with most of the weak points engineered out means you can just have fun with it. Nice video! My 996.1 is undergoing a full engine rebuild to 3.7 as well. Have it already for 6 years now, but it had a knocking sound at idle when cold and warm. They opened the engine and couldn’t find any bore scoring. The engine looked fine, but the pistons were out of ‘tolerance’ so too much play was causing the sound. The experienced rebuilder said it was ‘just’ normal wear of multiple components at 160.000km. They could see the car is well maintained, but still the engine was worn.
    The sound on your video however sounds more like a catalytic converter which is rattling. I replaced mine with straight x-pipe and it still meets the MOT check for emission in the Netherlands. Sounds brilliant combined with headers.

    • @leeevernden
      @leeevernden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, you might be onto something with the Cats rattling actually. That's something I'll check before the car goes off to Hartech. If the new metallic rattle is the Cats then I'll get Hartech to swap those out for some 200 cell ones. My current cats are the only original part of the exhaust system, it already has tubular headers and replacement genuine back boxes. As for the knock, I suspect they'll find something similar to yours in terms of normal wear and tear for these engines but my symptoms are more consistent with crank bearing wear as the noise does go away when at higher oil pressures. Out of interest where are you having your 3.7 work done? And what do they do with the IMS?

    • @Jean-Paul_1984
      @Jean-Paul_1984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@leeevernden keen to hear if it was indeed one of your cats. I’m not a mechanic, but to me it sounds too harsh and loud for a rod knock.
      So I decided to do it in Poland at an amazing workshop specialized in Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini. It saves me a lot of money compared to the prices in the Netherlands.
      They got the parts for 3.7 from a German Porsche specialist. This company also offers 3.9 for our cars, but that means €5.000 more because of the crankshaft from a 997 S(?). That’s a bit too much for me, looking at the value of a 996.
      For IMS I got one from a German company as well. To be honest my dual row IMS (I have 1998 model) was perfectly fine after inspection. But I didn’t want to take a risk of having a brand new engine and an old IMS. Regarding the IMS I think this is totally blown-up on the internet driven by Porsche ‘specialists’ who make a lot of money on fixing it for worries 996 owners. The real issue for 996 and early 997 is bore scoring. Especially for cars in colder climates.

    • @leeevernden
      @leeevernden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Jean-Paul_1984 Yeah the rattle is so loud you cant really hear the knock, they are 2 different issues for sure. I can check the cats quite easily with my stethoscope so I'll investigate that soon. Agreed on the IMS thing, but the market here in the UK at least has IMS solution cars commanding a premium over original IMS cars no matter the situation. Mine is also dual row currently, I read somewhere they have a 0.5% failure rate so it's nothing really. I think you are right to stick with 3.7, these cars have a good power to weight ratio anyway, just a bit more than the 3.4 would be perfect I think. Good luck with yours, hope all goes well.

    Mines an '016mt coupe in meridian metallic, very similar. Its got a few more options, 3 spoke wheel, headlights r litronic, but otherwise sister car. We don't have hartech in USA, sadly, but there are good options. Knock on wood, mine is not bore scored and so I may never have to do rebuild. I might anyway but not immediate. There are long waits here for rebuilds, and some metals are getting harder to source for the parts manufacturers...will watch please keep sharing.

    The Gen1 996's are superb, as are the Gen2's . I'd want the amber lights put back on personally. I was looking for the same as yours but ended up with a very low mileage Turbo coupe manual which is fabulous.

    Good luck and I hope it all works out, that’s a big investment so the car ought to be perfect when you get it back. I’ve had several of these cars, they all make a different noise or have some type of rattle or knock. The car looks very straight, what’s sort of mileage does it have?

    • @leeevernden
      @leeevernden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you David. The car has 87k miles on the clock, but has already had major engine work back in 2009 when at 30k miles. Apparently it had a damaged piston and the engine block has been relined - so I'll be interested to see what Hartech find in there. If only I could find/talk to the previous owner who had it from 2001-2021.

  • @atrim8
    @atrim8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's worth changing the starter and y cable which is the wiring for the starter too. These get tired with age and you can get a lazy starter when the engine is properly hot. Most cars of this age will be still on their original parts and its a reasonably common fault. It's a pain to change with the engine in, not impossible, but obviously a doddle when it's out.

  • @Ninedetails
    @Ninedetails 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That rattle doesn’t sound internal. Sounds like exhaust clamps rattling or something much smaller. Have you sent hartech a video of the engine noises. You might not need the rebuild just yet and you might be able to drive it. Engine mounts are the first thing I always do and have a set of RSS semi solids with less than 100 miles in that I need to sell. Love silver over metropole, I’ve had two of that combo 996.1 now. I really would challenge you on a rebuild to 3.7 for two reasons: 1.) the 3.4 engine is perfect for that car as it is. 2.) I can’t hear any sounds that make me think it needs a rebuild, so why would you spend that kind of money. I honestly would get it trailered to your nearest specialist and get them to inspect it. Might be a cheap fix and just drive it :)

    • @leeevernden
      @leeevernden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I will do another update in a couple of weeks but the rattle noise was indeed nothing to worry about, I did find that quite easily in the end and the car is back in use. I get the point about the 3.4, I have wrestled with that but I feel like I may regret not getting it further down the line as whilst the engine is being rebuilt to a ludicrously high standard, what's the point if the end result is exactly the same performance, I may as well allow Hartech to make the best engine they can from the 3.4, and that's the 3.7. It's not really about the money, the work is only expensive in relation to 996 prices, I want the best daily drivable analogue 911 I can get, for me the 996.1 c2 is just that part from the reliability issues. On your second point, I will put a recording of the knock in the next update, it has already been to Friends Green Porsche and they said the engine was - and this is their words - 'Knocking it's tits off' 🤣. But now I know the engine won't imminently explode I will tell Hartech to run it up and give their opinion before they do any work, that will just give me a safety net of a second opinion just in case friends green missed something silly.
