Previously I made a step-by-step guide on making a #dashboard / #controlpanel for your #smarthome using an Amazon Fire HD10 tablet and Fully Kiosk Browser. Since then, I've made a few changes, and even installed a second one. Some of my subscribers have had questions, so I try to answer them in this video as I revisit one of my most popular projects. I, unknowingly to my wife and son, prepared a tablet as a wall panel, and set it up last Saturday when they were both out.
I figure my son would love it (he could also ignore it, teenagers are hard to read sometimes), and my wife would go meh.
Turns out both of them say they will no longer use physical switches, they prefer the panel. 😂
My kid asked if we can set up his own tablet, that he doesn't use anymore, to place a panel on his bedroom.

I has an older Windows 10 Surface pro sitting around so I used that for a wall mounted dashboard. I have it permanently powered, battery limit set to 50%, a nearby motion sensor for lighting triggers the surface screen to wake using Hass Agent, Alexa enabled on it too and it works a treat. If you want to do smart charging get a Chargie. It goes in line with your usb feed and has a background app that does all the work. I have not connection to Chargie I am only a happy customer. I have now bought two more so I have a total of three. The only downside is that their app is not viewable through Home Assistant but if you have the Fully Kiosk integration your battery level and in plugged in are there plus you get a great history of your smart charging. Best part is the Chargie is an inexpensive addition. I really like your videos by the way. Keep them coming.

@@makeitworktech No it is very modern, the only thing is it isn't very DIY friendly, a lot of the programming has to be done through a contractor and the house has to be wired for it to the switches so harder to add-on to later. There is a control4 service in homeassistant that gives you light control so I'm adding that and then letting him tie in everything else separately. Tunneling into his network with Tailscale so I can help him edit it as needed.

Gained inspiration from these videos and being innovative with the dashboard. Made huge strides in the past few weeks with the coding and setup... one thing I'm wondering, how did you optimize your dashboard for your tablet? Have you tried the ha cast option where you can cast a dashboard to a device? I prefer webpage directly, but I was wondering your thoughts. Did you setup separate dashboards specific to the tablets in their particular areas or just use a generic dashboard? I do still think fully kiosk is one of the best ways to create a dashboard, unless you want to really muck around using app daemon, which is something I have never managed to master.
Battery life.... You'd have to keep the smart charging to keep the tablet between 50 and 75% charge for longest battery life. Never fully charge and never let it fall too low. that 50 to 75% is where the LION batteries are most stable and happy.

When the Ring doorbell is depressed (they call it a Ding) it's state goes from "clear" to "detected". I want full screen video from the Ring for 30 seconds following a Ding. I haven't figured out how to do that in an automation yet. I did download the new Ring MQTT integration which everybody seems to be glowing over but when I make the automation I can't get anything to work.

Hi Mark, from what I understand there aren't any apps like that for iOS because Apple doesn't like to give you (or apps) this kind of control over their devices. I have looked into this, but I haven't seen anyone that has been able to access the camera of the iPad as a motion sensor or camera entity in HA. The best I've seen is someone using an iPad and the "browser_mod" app with their iPad. They used the browser_mod to turn their screen on and off based on motion, but the motion detection was from an external sensor. Here's the link to their post: community.home-assistant.io/t/fully-kiosk-type-app-for-ipad-tablet/107773/18

One small part is to do with battery life, but more importantly, batteries don't like being on power all the time.
Case in point. During covid I was remote working with my laptop in the office and me remoting in to it to work.
After being on power 24/7 for 18+ months, the internal battery got so swollen that it deformed the keyboard to the lid couldn't close.
But more importantly, letting it swell made it a likely fire hazard.

Jesus Christ, you let it record all that data? Those smart locks aren't secure but, hey maybe it's safe neighborhood. A lot people say "oh you have smart phone anyways but some carry dum phones for privacy or have privacy oriented smart phone that are de-googled" I like home assistant because you can do non clouded connected lan only setups. I don't mind a few cloud things till I find something better but good God, phone, location battery, ecoh 24/ recording, smart locks. I get it you have nothing to hide but, daaanng that's intrusive. To each his own. Edit: also nice dash board, I'll be damned if it doesn't look great!

I didn't know they could display Home Assistant dashboards! From what I saw they were...pretty bad

I would never buy anything 3D printed on Ebay or Epsy as most everything is stolen designs, the seller didn't design it.

Too bad. This guy designs his own, doesn't copy from others.

That intro music was awful. Way too hot, adjust your levels down. It was nothing but clipping and static. :(

Hmmm, strange, it doesn't sound that way on my headphones. I'm getting better at sound editing, sorry about that!
