    With closed sides and sleeves this departs from the ordinary definition of "a poncho" and does not double as a shelter as easily. One has to suspect also that in tropical climates as its not open at the sides it will be too stuffy inside. I like the fact the back is long so if you wear it on its own when you sit down on it protects your upper legs from getting wet

    I went to school near where the Snugpak factory is. Most of my coats and sleeping bags when I was younger came from there. Didn't realise they were still trading, the one outdoor shop that stocked all their kit only sells work wear now.
    The rumour was that they used to make a lot of kit for the elite UK armed forces. Don't know if it was true or not, but it certainly didn't harm their rep, especially when we were kids. Wanted a poncho for cycling and chanced upon this. Think I'll call in at their factory and buy one. Thanks!

    I have used various military ponchos since the late 1960s until now. Last year I bought two Snugpak ponchos and they both leak like sieves. My wife and I were drenched after an hour in light rain after a gentle test walk through the town. These are the first ponchos to ever let me down. It is a great design with the sleeves, thumb holes and spacious hood etc but to complete our journey home we had to remove the ponchos and resort to polythene sheets, which did keep the rain off. I have used various Snugpak products over the years and have ordinarily found them to be superb. I can only assume that they made several batches that were not properly waterproofed or that they tried to make breathable. As I like the design I did not throw them but bought some waterproofing fluid to coat them with.
    As I mentioned I have used many military and some non-military ponchos over the years and from different countries. The Snugpak is my favourite design (if only mine had been supplied fully waterproof) and my second all time favourite is the US army poncho.
    Apart from when in very windy conditions I prefer ponchos to Goretex jackets any day. Goretex is breathable but only until it starts raining.
    Thank you for the review.

      ***** Thanks for the feedback! I haven't tested in a downpour but I hope to see how they hold up over time. I too have a Marmot rain suit (pants/jacket) that has never let me down but a poncho is great for a survival kit and being able to throw over your whole body and gear. I will do an update in the spring. Thanks again for the comment and watching.

    I have one of these along with the liner and I would say some are trolling or had unrealistic expectations. Is this the most hardcore bombproof poncho ever built? No, it is not close to the ruggedness of a military issue or civilian Goretex type. There are some thicker sleeveless military types that are set up to tarp better also. If that is what you are after than this isn't it tho it could be modified if one were inclined. What is it then? It is great for an emergency situation or for day to day use in the civilian world. If you had a car breakdown or needed to hoof it to work in the rain than this is awesome. If you need to constantly dive into thorn bushes avoiding enemy fire than get something else. If you are doing relaxed hiking or camping where you aren't bumbling stumbling hauling arse thru thick brush than this is great. If you like and can afford Kifaru woobies, need the hottest new camo pattern to be cool and have to impress Macgyver style with a poncho tarp tent than go that way. This is a mid price range alternative that when used correctly and realisticly is very nice.

    I found poncho sleeves a little short by about 2 inches in my opinion ,but is made well overall
    Additional Liner is very nice! Sleeves on liner are of adequate length. Liner stuff sack is a little small if you stuff it back in but fold and roll seemed to help
    I purchased mine as the kit from Amazon that included the pillow for $25

    I like the pocket on ponchos (you can keep the cords and stakes in it to make a shelter) but this simply is not a poncho, it is a non breathable raincoat and that might mean sweating and discomfort fast on the trail. Also to sit out a storm something needs to be longer.

    Just bought mine today... Great review... Do you recommend the Snugpak poncho liner?

  • @jay-rus4437
    @jay-rus4437 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    We bought these for all four of our emergency go bags, but Ive been second guessing that decision.....the reason is that the design of the poncho limits it from being a good multi-use item. As we tested our equipment and hiked with our gear, it was quickly apparent that weight is a HUGE consideration. So having effective multi use items is a big deal.
    We have snugpak poncho, snugpak jungle blanket, and snugpak tarp.
    Thinking that having a good large poncho with liner would be more versatile, but with less weight and items

    Have you tested it in heavy rain or under the garden hose yet?
    I hear some of the ponchos aren't 100% water proof.
    Does it have grommets/ties for improvised shelter and how does it lay out when open?
    Thanks.

    I know I'm necro-ing an old video - but I've been trying to come up with a good way to setup this poncho as a bivy (I have one I received recently as a gift). I can't find information on how to use it like a bivvy anywhere - I've played around with a couple of ideas on climbing in upside down and using the liner as a sleeping bag, but nothing really stands out as a good way of doing it. Do you have any information or ideas on it?

    Have you ever tested this poncho for durability? I am looking for something to use in a bug out bag. I was wondering how the poncho would hold up for an application where I to have to walk for a few days in the woods. The military options are nice in that regard, but they are comparatively heavier. I am looking for lightweight gear that can hold up to rough use so that I can shave weight out of my bag.

    Hey again good video, good review, it seems you an American that's not on a personal crusade to promote yourself but the products you review, I've had the poncho and liner for few years, and I can say you can use this even in snow fall, FYI Snugpak supplied the Royal Marines with quite few items for use in there artic warfare kit, as you know if marines use kit outside of the normal supply chain it has to be good, keep up with your reviews, look forward to seeing more.

    I have had this one for 5 or 6 years now, is stong enough, but not 100% waterproof anymore, but I spray it with a nikwax proofer on the shoulders and arms, and back of the hood where the water collects, seems to help. The pocket often fills with water in stead rain, dont leave your phone in there.

    As much as I like Snugpak items, can't help but close my eyes and listen to the sound this thing makes when you're adjusting it. Sounds like you are wrapped in tinfoil. Always been a fan of the Viet Nam era type ponchos. Heavier yes, but way more durable. Just looks like a big oversized raincoat but I'd still get one in a pinch.

    It doesn't appear to have grommets or loops for staking or tying to make shelter. If it doesn't, that's an oversight.
    I use military surplus ponchos. I carry two on a backpacking trek over days or weeks so I can wear one over a lightweight windblock/rain proof jacket when there's a heavy downpour and two so I can make a fully enclosed shelter if the weather turns foul. I carry one on day hikes, and for overnights in warmer weather.
    One USGI poncho weighs about 9 ounces more. That's because it's tougher military spec designed to take punishment. Two short loops of paracord through the centre grommets works to pass your thumbs through, and it has an internal cord to tie it around your waist in windy conditions.
    My tip to you is when the weather is changeable with frequent showers, and there's a dry period, don't take it fully off. Just take the front over your head and secure it to your pack's handle or a shoulder strap using the hood's cinch cord. That way it will dry faster and it's already draped over your pack and quick to put on if the rain comes in again.
    If you don't mind getting wet knees from drips when the poncho blows about, wear gaiters over your boots that come up to just below the knees. On a smaller person, they probably won't get wet knees.
    I hate rain pants and only wear them in very cold weather. A poncho allows you freedom from those in the vast majority of situations.

    Poncho wasnt as protective as I thought it would be in 55 degree weather. Felt like I was wrapped in saran wrap that was left in a refridgerator overnight. Tried five snugpak products and all 5 were busts. Will stick with my trusty Hazard 4 Poncho Villa - it keeps too much warmth in for summertime but is excellent in cold weather. As always, though, you do a great job with your reviews...

      +AJ Usog Snugpak makes a custom fitted insulated liner for this "poncho" (cagoule). Of course you want good air circulation in warm weather especially in order to vent sweat. I wouldn't want it to be warm without the liner.

      Gosh, never heard a pig swear either when it was hiking or just sittin' around. I'm sure glad you didn't say "sweat like a pig" as some ignorant folks do. Pigs don't even have sweat glands and therefore can't sweat. Thus their fondness for puddles to cool off in. A much more accurate animal reference is to "sweat like a racehorse".

    have you ever had any problems with it? stitching come loose? tears? etc. . . .

      +Christy S the stitching on snugpak isn't the best but holds up pretty well across all the gear I have from them.

    Would this be a better choice than a new Army acu poncho?

    • @livingsurvival
      @livingsurvival  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Might be lighter weight, not sure.

    I think it would be interesting to mod it. shorten it to shirt length, maybe a 2 inches longer, then you have a poncho shirt.

    looks like a well made piece of gear, I'm 6'4" does this poncho fit tall people without too much leg exposure it appears that it does, however I don't know how tall you are......

    • @livingsurvival
      @livingsurvival  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm 5'10" and I would think it would still be ok for taller people. Thanks for watching!

    • @livingsurvival

      +Magician1263 never liked frogg toggs. They are good for the ultra low price though.

    sides don't open so not a poncho - might be better called a really big rain coat.

    That's not a poncho. It's a large anorak style jacket. Great idea, but it's not a poncho and doesn't have the multiple uses of a poncho.
