It's a solid method. I just like the quickness of bungees, then I also have cordage for other uses. Everyone has their own way. I do love the CPL's channel

@@wanderingcalamity360 fwiw I keep a bow-line tied in my ridge line but I use a nite-ize figure nine instead of tying a truckers hitch. It's easier for me when my hands are cold.

I think I have one or two of those nite-ize figure 9s in my strap kit in my truck.
I might have to give it a shot and see if it's worth the weight instead of screwing with the trucker's hitch.
This is the best set up for stealth camping. With practice you can strike camp in less than three minutes. As you stated in a previous video keep your gear tight by not leaving stuff strewn around you; use what you need and place it back in your pack.
This is a killer system. I purchased a poncho to have some gear protection and the ability to use it as shelter as well as poncho is insane value. Military guys sure know their way around the woods, respect.
The Hooch! My only shelter in the early ‘90s. We didn’t have bivy bags. Only what is now called the ranger roll. And of course that old heavy sleeping bag which always got left on the deuce. Only used when traveling at highway speeds in the back of the deuce. We were issued a bug net but it was too bulky we relyed on Deep Woods Off until one year they issued everyone an aerosol can of DDT. I used that stuff wisely and sparingly. I made it last a couple years. That stuff the best. That stuff was GRUNT (BUG) PROOF! No trees, no problem! Slide the large Alice pack a couple inches under the poncho and secure it to the ground on the other side. The waist pad on the frame with a small disposable hospital pillow wrapped in a brown T-shirt and you got yourself a Hooch Hilton!

I traded a spare hutchie (Australian army tarp) for ACU poncho with a Wolfhound from the 25th ID and have found it to be one of the most versatile bits of kit I carry!
I drape it over my pack to keep it dry, use it as a blanket in a pinch and use it as rain gear in static positions.
I find it much better that our issued rain gear.
Usually you can use Tent poles,quite handy if you can break them down, cheers
I carry the U.S. military poncho in my get home bag and planned to use it for shelter if need be. The bungee's are so obvious, but I never thought to use them for set up. Plus, the gortex bivey is a great idea.
Would love to see a video about how soldiers procure/purify water in the field.
I did my class for sulc school on water purification. But that was 35 years ago. I would like to see how the military is doing individual purification as well. I am guessing the have advanced by leaps and bounds over the iodine tablets we used.

Supply usually brings it on a truck. It can either be in a water buffalo or in water bottles. Then we drink it and throw the empty bottles in a trash bag hanging off of the LMTV.
I am making it funny, but that is the truth. Soldiers don't need to purify their own water. The Army logistical train is designed to make sure everyone has water. That would be a better question for survivalists and backpackers

Awesome video and shelter idea! Just what I was looking for. Straight to the point, very lightweight, easy to setup, multifunctional and good for stealth camping if you have camouflage gear like yours. I especially think the bungee cord is a good idea since I hate tying and playing with cords.

many many years ago in West Germany I slept on the ground by using the bag for the old vehicle camouflage net and my mountain bag, I was able to completely wrap up, it poured rain that night and I woke up completely dry, if you're tired enough you find a way after flight school I flew my make shift tent lol
In west Germany I stayed in a debris hut I made in several seconds cuz I kinda got lost, on a hilltop.

Great tips Randall. I like how you grabbed the stakes and packed it away. You mentioned that you've had your poncho's hood tied since you were issued it. Do you never use it as rain gear since you were issued the rain jacket and pants? If so, would a tarp of either similar size/weight be a better option?

Most of us used the wet weather tops instead of the poncho. This is a great shelter for grunts or emergencies but most people seem to be more comfortable under a larger tarp. I love my DD Tarp, which is 3x3 meters. Plenty of room, especially for making a floor.

I rarely had time to make a shelter. Most of the time I did not waste time since I wanted the ability to pack up and move quickly. Sure wish I had my hammocks back then! Just hang low to the ground. You have any stealth hammock camping videos? I have been saving your videos to have something to watch for after my surgery in a few weeks.

Yea as a hitchiker I had my toolkit coat and a tarp which made ok shelter. Always did it in warmer areas though so I used repellant.
These are the same principles I was taught in the Danish army. Was surprised when I recently went on an exercise with some US National Guard soldiers who had tents issued! Looked super comfy, but didn't seem very tactical to me. They were camo of course, but were obviously way above knee height and not as fast to take down as my tarp setup. Anyone know anything about this?

"Making" tent pegs is a simple as taking a stick and breaking it into 4 pieces and forcing those pieces in the ground: anything more and you're over-thinking it!

Who manufacturers the Army issued poncho? USGI? I have issue with grommets separating under mild to moderate tension. Appreciate you sharing your experience it is invaluable to those of us who didn't serve. Thanks for service

There is a company out there that produces a similar poncho that uses USGI in their name. Found on Amazon and on eBay but aren’t the same as the actual military poncho. I’ve found the actual military ponchos on eBay but you have to be careful what you buy.
What is a good (grunt proofed) bug net for a bivy that you would recommend? Assuming we do NOT have access to an old military one? Ty.
Check out my video before this. I've used my $40 hammock with integrated bugnet net and it's worked well. There are simple bugnet tents for pretty cheap as well. Then you just need a tarp overhead. Pretty soon I'll grunt-proof the Catoma popup net

Sure wish I was given a Poncho lol the Canadian Military gives us a heavy duty ground sheet to go with our bivi bag. Have you ever Grunt Proofed a Canadian military ground sheet?

When I was in the 82Abn Infantry we were issued the heavier think ponchos! That was in 81 and I still have them and one of the thin camo ones!

Thank you, closely matches what I do already. I don't use bungees but a ridge line. I think I should give bungees a try.
But a question- using a poncho only as a tarp does seem wastefull to me. Either save yourself the weight of the hood- and the possible hassle by using a pure tarp, or use the poncho as as raingear (where it is mostly superior - depending on necessities).
But I think, that is just one of those militray things, is it? You have to use what you are issued?
The Army issues an actual tarp now that's a bit bigger. I just wanted to show this basic method. I'm also a tarp lover. Bungees are also great for high winds, as they absorb the dynamic forces. A static line will put all that force into your grommets, possibly ripping it.
@@GruntProof parallel evolution to reachvthe same result. Ibam just draping the poncho over the ridge line. Staking down directly on the opposize side of where I want to enter. The entry side qill be staked down with two lenghts of shock cord. That gives ne the flexibilty in the construction and a bit more space inside. Storm and heavy heavy rain approved!

Has anyone tied the liner to the poncho then made the A frame? I am wondering if it would make a warmer shelter if the A touches the ground and providing you have something under you and enough clothes. I am curious is the air space inside the shelter would be warmer with the liner attached to the poncho.
We all tried it back in the day. There's too much space for it to help

Kann man den US GI Poncho mit dem von Helikon vergleichen? Ich denke das der US GI stabiler und haltbarer ist?! Leider habe ich bisher noch keinen ordentlichen US Poncho hier in Deutschland kaufen können, oft werden uralte Ponchos zu einem hohen Preis angeboten... Hat der US Poncho innen eine PU Beschichtung?

I believe the issued Goretex jacket is used as a raincoat nowadays. No one uses the poncho as rain gear anymore or so I'm told
I trust those are better than the old rain suits we had in the 70s, which were stiff and crackly and hot and so impermeable that you got as wet from condensation as you would have from the rain. I always used the poncho instead.
My generation was not big on using ponchos on our person. The wet weather top and bottoms were fine

It's a $20 hammock with a big net attached. Had it for 3 years. I just make sure I have something under it so the ground doesn't destroy it
