Dash pot oil specified by SU is SAE 20 Which equates to auto transmission fluid

Andy... I use the same oil weight as the engine... 20W-50 then I place 6 drops of Sea-Foam in each Dash-Pot. This keeps the Carburetors clean and running smooth... very responsive.

Sea foam! I'm guessing that is a product rather than scooped out the Atlantic?!!!

I've always used engine oil and never had any problems. I once saved a very nice Young lady in distress when her Mini would only run at full throttle by running oil off the end of the dip stick into the dash pot. Apparently I was a hero.

You say the dashpot's purpose is to cushion the closing of the throttle. That's not what I've read, which is that it slows down the OPENING of the throttle, keeping the slide lower than it normally would be, for a brief period. This reportedly behaves somewhat like an accelerator pump, enrichening the mixture temporarily. The volume of air is reduced, whereas the fuel itself is subjected to a relatively big vacuum. It's an elegant solution with fewer parts - typically SU I think. It explains the resistance felt when installing the dashpot plunger.

My old man always used Marvel Mystery Oil for dashpots. And he used an old man oil can too! Of course, when he was doing this, he was younger than I am now!

@@AndysMGAdventures it's often used down cylinders to lubricate before breaking an engine free too. It's marvelous for sure. But what it's made of, is a mystery.

Hey Andy, Another fabby video as always. There is always great debate about what weight of oil is added to the DP's but I just use the same as you. The purists out there will be labelling you a naughty wee sausage. I really like the wee dance. Keep up the super work and I look forward to the next wee jig. Cheers

Awesome video as always. I've been around most types of carbarators but I've never seen one that needs oil. I don't have original ones on my mg so I would have never known. Thanks for the Info. Also I updated my Google drive with more progress pictures. As always Awesome video and can't wait for the next one. 👍

I just brought home a 76 Midget that hasn't run in years. The last owner said he accidently added gasoline to the dashpot to "prime" the carb!! Should I take the top of the dashpot off to clean and refill with oil?

    • @AndysMGAdventures

So the oil in the dash pots, stop the throttle dipping quickly so when you lift off the gas pedal the throttle doesn't cut or drop quickly

Hard to say. As I've never done it. But it would restrict the movement within those carbs needles I should imagine
