    LOL @ the warmER weather. What's your opinion of bypassing the (probably full) crankcase gas canister, removing the plastic bumpers, and re-lowering a 1977 Midget?

  • @wendyvic4046
    @wendyvic4046 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Older video, I know, but if anyone sees this I have a question: is the Midget supposed to drive like a "go cart"? I ask because, I am looking at one, a '77, absolutely beautiful car, very clean, shifts smoothly, grinds going into first, unless stopped or a really judicious double clutch. But driving it felt almost like there was no suspension. Was fun, but I expected a smoother ride, like maybe a Honda CRX? Is this just the nature of the beast? Great video by the way. Thanks

    • @AndysMGAdventures
      @AndysMGAdventures หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there Wendy. The midget is like a go kart, but not as much as the original Mini is for example. The midget is low to the ground and has pretty comfy suspension by comparison. But it is still bumpy. In fact you will find you often scrape the road beneath you ! So first gear has no syncro mesh on it. Meaning you need to be stopped or rolling very slowly (you can sometimes cheat it by slipping into 2nd before heading for 1st!) Overall, having had both I can safely say I miss the ride of the midget compared to the mini !

    • @wendyvic4046
      @wendyvic4046 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AndysMGAdventuresthank you for responding! Well, from what little I can gather, the 1977 (with 1500 Spitfire motor and transmission) is alleged to have a synchronized first gear? I am confused about that. And the previous owner (before the owner who has the car now) has replaced the single SU carb with a Weber; at idle, the thing sounds "wonky" and smells rich, which leads me to believe the carb may be set to rich at idle or maybe not pulling advance in at idle. Current owner has had the car four years and says he has done nothing except oil and filter changes during that time. I dunno, is a very clean Midget, I have always wanted one, but driving it was a shock, in that... well...I used to fly airplanes, and it was like going from, say, a Piper Navajo to a Piper Cub. I mean, I felt every pebble in the road, it seemed. I am going to try to look at another one, same year, unrestored though, with roughly 35K original miles. I just want to make sure I get a GOOD one, one I don't have to do a lot of repairs to. Thank you again for replying, and you have a new subscriber.

    • @AndysMGAdventures
      @AndysMGAdventures หลายเดือนก่อน

      @wendyvic4046 hmmmm. If it's crunching going into 1st... and it's meant to have a syncro on it.... I'd be slightly wary that those have started wearing out. And replacing them is a gearbox out job I think ! Deffo drive another !

    • @wendyvic4046
      @wendyvic4046 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AndysMGAdventures yes. It virtually will not go back into first gear whilst moving. Shifts smoothly otherwise, but getting into first was only happening when stopped. And when stopped, it was easy to get into gear. The old chap who owns the car is very nice, we talked for hours, I drove the little car through all kinds of back roads, but he said he THOUGHT the car didn't have a synchronized first gear. I looked it up when I returned home, and it appears these later Midgets are supposedly synchronized in all forward gears. Shame really, because the car is really clean, could find zero evidence of rust anywhere (he said he never drives it in inclement weather), and but for the first gear problems and "wonky" idle, the car seems perfect. I almost grabbed a screwdriver from my car to attempt adjustment of the carb, then I thought "Oh my, what if you get it WAY off, Wendy" 😆. Thanks for the reply.

    • @AndysMGAdventures
      @AndysMGAdventures หลายเดือนก่อน

      @wendyvic4046 haha! It's interesting about the 1st gear situation. I guess my only other thought is to double check the engine itself, make sure it is the 1500 not a replacement 1275! But that should be obvious and I won't insult your intelligence haha

    Hi Owned two midgets in my time. First one of the last mark III’s from new in 1973 and an L plate back in 2001 What was built in Abingdon was very good. The place was unlike the rest of British Leyland. The car suffered because of poor quality components. The back seals on many crankshafts leaked because of worn tooling on the A series engines. A lot of the electrical components made by Lucas were poor quality - why do I know all this? I worked for Marshall of Cambridge when I bought it The main problem now is the twin carb set up. Needed adjusting spring and summer and contributed to a higher fuel consumption than the single carb on the Austin’s 1300 coupe (and it was faster!) fitted to enhance the sporting image, but in reality has continued to be an unnecessary pain, but you can’t retrofit them into a midget as not enough room under the bonnet Please don’t get me wrong. They were a happy part of my youth and great cars. You definitely could ‘do it in an MG’

    Hello Andy. I love your videos and your humor. They have been very informative. I am surprised at some of the mean comments. I just turned a Young 80. You bring good advice to allot of us and make things bright and cheerful. I just picked up a 1973 Midget in pretty good shape. Very little surface rust. Has round heel arches. Oil cooler. It is all there. 63,000 original miles. Pure original. It had been stored for 30 yrs. It should start once have battery. Carbs cleaned up. New distributor etc. I am very cited to have fun project at my age. When I graduated from high school in 1962 Dad bought a Bugeye sprite. That was so much fun. So finding this one is great. Question. Where can I find a detailed parts list that shows size of screws and bolts. The yellow plastic fan and radiator were taken off and all the nuts and bolts missing. I called Moss and they don’t show size of nuts and bolts

    Almost every one will have some bondo in the front of the hood, as this area is very vulnerable to damage from newer cars with higher bumpers. Check the inside for poor bodywork. A little bit is not a deal killer, but bondo over rust isn’t ideal. Also check for rust in the battery box.

    I have owned 2 Midgets that I purchased both when they were brand new, right off the showroom floor. I liked the mustor color so much that I chose that color for each 🚗. My first MG-MIDGET was a 1972 model with Chrome bumpers. Later after selling that car and wishing I hadn't, I purchased my second Midget, but by then it had those ugly rubber bumpers. The second Midget, also a mustor color, was a 1976 model. I know how emotional it is when you identify with your car. My next car was a "British Green" Triumph Spitfire. However, I got married and my wife and I started our family. We had 6 children, three sons and three daughters, so the two-seater 🚗 were not an option for us.

    I had a 1973 ... I put a Toyota starlet 5 speed gearbox, coby exhaust and custom air box. It was so cool... I blew up driveshaft. Fixed that and it was possibly the coolest car I’ve ever driven. Slide round corners... and heaps of power. Ohhh reminisce... now I have 4 kids (under 6) and a Mitsubishi people mover 😏

    Thank you for your videos, always informative and fun. However I do not understand this one. The moment the car is with front wheels on the ramps, and you jack it up at the rear, it would slide off the ramps, because the handbrake is only on the rear wheels, at least mine does...?

    • @AndysMGAdventures
      @AndysMGAdventures 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The ramps are notched so the wheel sits snugly inside each little cut out . Hence no rolling back off them!

    My bonnet spring and locking mechanism unwind constantly with the vibration of the running engine. About once a month or so, I screw the lock up to 5cm from the underside of the bonnet. It's about a 30 second job and keeps stuff where it ought to be.

    This is a really good video man I just did this on my recently past grandfathers 1970 midget and sm I did differently if you ever have to do the slave again there’s just barely enough room to reach your hand up and around the trans and that frame to get that top bolt in without the notch definitely a little bit more tricky but you can do it now I just have to struggle bleeding it wish me luck
