I want to go back to a time where THIS was considered mediocre television.
Today this season alone would be a masterpiece

Hot Take: Amy Gardener is a better character in Post-Sorkin years.

I like how in the later seasons, Josh looks a little less like Josh and a little more like Jake Peralta's Dad.

I can see why The West Wing's ratings dropped after Sorkin left (from #22 to #65 by the end).
The show ended up hugely different by it's conclusion.
It started as stories of a half dozen or so people behind Bartlett as he serves as POTUS.
It ended up being about various candidates and all their behind-the-scenes people during an election.
Don't get me wrong, it was still a wonderful show.
    Tremendous.
But it is NOT the same show any longer.
You are asking an awful lot of viewers who have watched and come to expect a certain type of show over four seasons.
And have developed loyalty to characters and a format.
John Wells (the showrunner after Sorkin left) should have - imo - continued the show as it was until Bartlett leaves the White House.
And then - if he wanted - start a new series backtracking a bit to take up with the Presidential race and the new Santos presidency (the latter I REALLY liked).

The problem is there are only so many storylines of the staff members that you can do. In the real White House there is a lot more turnover than you had in the show. It would be crazy to think that POTUS would have a virtually unchanged senior staff for all 8 years. Not to mention that in real life top advisers would be leaving to help the next candidate. Unless you are Donald Trump you would be picking who you can from previous administrations of that party. According to the storyline, the Democrats had been out of power for at least 8 years before Bartlett so it wasn’t like you had a lot of people leftover from President Newman (nor does it sound like you’d want them).

Season 7 is my second-favourite after season 1. Jimmy Smits and Alan Alda were phenomenal additions to the cast and saved TWW from petering out into ignominy.

Continuing the show as it was would have resulted in two more seasons like season 5, with the remaining writers desperately trying to mimic Sorkin's style and failing 90% of the time. Yes, following Josh and Donna out onto the campaign trail turned it into a different show, but at least it felt like the writers found their voice with that show. When they focused on the Bartlet administration, you got story arcs like Toby leaking the military shuttle and Will's romance with Kate.

I really disliked the Amy Gardner character on the show. The best scene with her in it was when President Bartlett dressed her down and threatened to fire her when she was Mrs' Bartletts chief of staff. th-cam.com/video/C-ZAydKyxQw/w-d-xo.html

@pac401....Thank you for including the clip with your comment! I had completely forgotten this moment until I read you comment and instantly remembered how well Mary-Louise Parker portrayed Amy Gardner. She did such a commendable job too! I've always embraced those who play a character that is so "not them" and they end up owning the part! Amy was absolutely A PILL...but man she brought it in her scenes no matter who was in her line of fire! Salute👋

She loved to cut off her nose to spite her face. Too busy demanding what she wanted, to see it was costing everyone what they needed.

It's also worth remembering that Amy cost the President something he wanted badly, because she felt it was not a "Perfect" solution to the issue at hand. To the point of cutting Josh's phone cord and shoving his phone into a bucket of water. Barlett took out his frustration over that on Josh. But you can be sure he didn't forget that Amy screwed him.
