    He's Welsh, which is famous as a nation for having phenomenal men's choirs. This might be why you're hearing an operatic kind of singing, Jay. Either way, he's got an unbelievable natural talent. When you listen to him sing it's easy to just normalize how great he sounds but then you realize what an astonishingly powerful voice that is. He was so hip, too.

      As a child he had tuberculosis so he could never work in the mines. His father was a coal miner though

      leeeastwood just googled him said he worked in a glove factory and construction no mention of being a truck driver and yet I remember hearing on the telly he was- he can still sing well today

      As far as I know he grew up in the Valleys, the industrial coal mining area of South Wales where they have a huge tradition of male voice choirs. I'm sure this is why this voice is how it is. Love still watching him on the UK version of The Voice where he's a judge, he's a total legend!!!

      Americans don’t know about their talented culture these days. Schools stopped teaching about Europe in the 70’s. My youngest brother barely learned a thing about other countries when history and geography were combined into social studies.

    Tom Jones is Welsh from Wales. So many Welsh have the gift of song. Very musical nationality. He was so hot. The ladies swooned over him.

    We used to watch Tom Jones' TV show every week just to watch the women go nuts over him during his closing songs. When he untied his bowtie halfway through his set they would freak out. There wasn't a dry seat in the house.
    Also, he sang the theme song for the James Bond classic "Thunderball" and the story goes that he put so much into the powerful, sustained note at the very end that he passed out afterward.

    ONLY USING CAPS FOR ME TO SEE BETTER - I DIDN'T FIND ANY THING INDICATING TOM JONES HAD VOICE LESSONS. HE IS 80 & A JUDGE ON THE VOICE UK. HE STILL HAS ALMOST AS MUCH POWER SINGING.

    He did a cover of Prince's song Kiss. I remember I thought it was going to suck but it was actually good. Totally different from Prince's style but he did a great job with it. If you haven't heard it yet you should react to it.

    When I was a little girl my mom asked me do you like Elvis or Tom Jones. I put myself in the Tom Jones category. He still sings like that. Amazing.

    No formal training whatsoever. Pure God Given Talent. He came from a coal-mining town in Wales. My mom and my grandmother loved that guy. I know him because of them. His music was at my house and my grandmother's when I was too little to know. So, for me, it's not just a man with a great voice. It's fond memories of my mom and my grandmother's house filled with the music that they loved.

      We had mini eisteddfods at school for St. Davids Day. Teachers didn't like it but we sang this religiously every year despite them trying to stop us. Someone in the school orchestra would find a way to play it and the entire school would descend into organised chaos singing this.

    I'm not sure if Tom Jones was the first to experience this, but back in the day women used to throw their underwear on stage while he was performing.

      What really started with Frank Sinatra continued indeed with Tom. Jackie Wilson used to get women throwing their panties onstage with their hotel keys inside of them. Yes, Tom had his share of panties painting the stage.

    I don’t believe he was classically trained (opera). I love seeing your reaction JayVee to singers that are gifted with amazing voices which are not auto-tuned. It is refreshing and inspiring to those who grew up listening to musicians that you are now listening to! Good on you!

    Do one nobody has done yet! One of the best Bond theme songs, THUNDERBALL!! Tom is what 007 would sound like if he could sing. Amazing song

      Thunderball is my favorite song by him. He has so much control. No one else could do it like him. The best James Bond theme because of his singing.

      @Perry Malcolm He had no training, he began singing as a child at family functions. In fact he didn't SING AT ALL FOR 2 years as he was bedridden. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis and all he did was just draw and listen to music. The man known as "The Voice" was just straight up talent. ❤

    I don't see many people around me who get this much joy from these genres of music, as much as others they listen to.

    It’s the Welsh in him, singing is a massive part of our culture and livelihood so he’s been raised singing in choirs. He’s an incredibly gifted man.
    I’ll forever adore that he’s done all sorts of world tours and lived so many places, but still has his good old valleys accent

    Tom Jones is in his 80's now and he has lost nothing. His voice is still the same. He belts out a song, to this day, like he has it for breakfast every morning.

    No formal training, done a stint in the Welsh coal mines and learnt his trade singing in pubs and working mens clubs. Great clip of him singing "Great balls of fire" as a judge on the Voice UK

    He still sings and is one of the judges on the voice Britain and many times he is asked to sing with a contestant when they sing one of his songs and he usually does lol

    As a teenager I was obsessed with him. He wore tight pants, had a beautiful sexy voice and was handsome. Yep every teenage girl's dream.

    Back in the 1960s and 70s some of the singers had very powerful voices. Such as Blood Sweat and Tears-when I die, Gary Puckett and the Union gap's - young girl, The Ides of March - I'm your vehicle, Rodger Whittaker - the last farewell, the Brooklyn Bridge-, and many others.

    I just looked this up. No training. Sang at weddings and such. And got married at age 16 and stayed married till she died 59 years later. (Not faithfully but still.)

    Just a regular working guy from a working class family in Pontypridd, South Wales. I live in England and was visiting family in Pontypridd really close to where he grew up. Just a humble little terraced house. He worked in a factory and construction. He used to sing in dance halls and working men's clubs where he eventually got spotted. What a voice and what a gift.

    Fell in love with his voice at a young age the first song I heard was I'll never fall in love again I was 13 at the time and tried to sing like him but no one is like Tom he's one of a kind.

    Tom was born to do it. At 80 he still can. He is a natural baritone, but could hit some higher notes. But his still outstanding.

    Hi Jay, Sir Tom wasn’t classically trained, he sang from an early age and he sang in his school choir. Look up Welsh choir’s on TH-cam.
